For a strong place to start with 2025’s films, consider One Battle After Another, Sinners and Sorry, Baby, then choose among the other five picks by mood. Although the familiar search is “best movies of 2025 so far,” the year is complete: this is a retrospective list, not a midyear snapshot. It draws on critics’ selections and awards, with an eye toward variety rather than treating any one ranking as definitive.
How this list was chosen
“Best” depends on what you want from a movie. Metacritic’s year-end ranking covers eligible U.S. theatrical and direct-to-streaming or VOD releases dated January 1 through December 31, 2025. It requires at least seven professional reviews; the scores in its list were recorded on January 6, 2026. Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato awards use a different adjusted formula that factors in ratings and review counts, while the Associated Press publishes individual writers’ selections. Those lists and awards offer useful signals, but they are not interchangeable rankings.
The seven films below come from a shortlist supported by those sources. They span different moods and kinds of filmmaking, and the order is a guide, not a claim that one shared scoring system placed them in this sequence. The selections are U.S.-framed; they are not a universal list, and none is presented as a documentary pick.
Seven movies to consider from 2025
1. One Battle After Another
A good first choice if you want a large-scale action-and-adventure film. Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr named it her top pick of 2025, and Rotten Tomatoes gave it the Best Action & Adventure Movie Golden Tomato award. That combination makes it the clearest high-profile choice on this list for viewers drawn to action.

2. Sinners
Choose this if you want the film that received Rotten Tomatoes’ top overall 2025 movie award: Best Movie. It was also among the Associated Press’s midyear favorites, giving it recognition from both an awards program and critics’ selections.
3. Sorry, Baby
A critics-forward pick with a particularly strong midyear showing. In Metacritic’s list of films debuting from January through June 2025, it ranked first with a Metascore of 90 in the June 30 snapshot. The Associated Press also included it among its favorites. The score belongs to that dated snapshot, rather than being a permanent or universal measure of the film.
Rank #2

4. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
For a choice guided by a year-end critic’s individual selections, consider this film: it placed second in Lindsey Bahr’s Associated Press year-end picks. That is a writer’s list, not a position in Metacritic’s aggregate ranking or a Rotten Tomatoes award.
5. Marty Supreme
Another of Bahr’s year-end choices, this one ranked third in her Associated Press selections. It provides a useful alternative if you are building a watchlist from more than the two Golden Tomato winners featured here.

What the rankings can—and can’t—tell you
Metacritic’s list is useful when you want an aggregate of professional reviews, but its seven-review minimum excludes films that did not meet that threshold, and its eligibility is based on U.S. release dates. Rotten Tomatoes’ Golden Tomato awards recognize winners by category using an adjusted method that incorporates ratings and review counts. The Associated Press selections reflect named writers’ judgments. A film’s appearance on one list, or a high score in one dated snapshot, should not be read as proof that it will suit every viewer.
This selection favors a mix of recognition and mood rather than a comprehensive survey of international cinema, documentaries or every genre. If you want a documentary-specific 2025 watchlist, this group is not a substitute for one.
