The quickest way to choose: The Conjuring: Last Rites is the franchise-horror pick, The Mighty Nein is the one for Critical Role and Dungeons & Dragons fans, and A Man on the Inside season 2 is the warmest binge. For something more literary, try Train Dreams; for adult relationship drama, The Roses; for a divisive, issue-driven thriller, After the Hunt; and for uncomplicated family viewing, The Family Plan 2.

At a glance

1. The Conjuring: Last Rites — HBO Max

If you want the weekend’s clearest horror event, The Conjuring: Last Rites is the obvious starting point. Marketed as the final installment in The Conjuring series, the film brings Ed and Lorraine Warren out of retirement for a case linked to their first-ever ghostly encounter.

That setup gives longtime viewers a direct continuity hook rather than an unrelated supernatural story. It is best approached as a franchise finale: the appeal is the return of the Warrens, the accumulated mythology and the promise of a closing chapter. Viewers looking for an entirely fresh horror concept may find the familiar machinery less compelling.

Critical reception was mixed at the time of the original November 21 guide, which displayed a 59% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ rating. That figure was a snapshot from that publication date, not a permanent or current score. Choose this one for supernatural scares, recognizable franchise characters and a final-chapter atmosphere.

Good match for: viewers who have followed the series, paranormal-horror fans and anyone wanting a recognizable theatrical horror franchise at home.

2. The Mighty Nein season 1 — Prime Video

The Mighty Nein is the strongest recommendation here for fantasy role-playing audiences. It is an adult animated adaptation of Critical Role’s second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, set in the world of Exandria. The story follows a new party of outcasts and mavericks, not the characters from The Legend of Vox Machina.

That distinction matters. You do not need to treat the series as another season of Vox Machina; it is a different adventuring group within the same broader Critical Role universe. Existing fans get another route into Exandria, while newcomers get a fantasy-party story built around an ensemble rather than a single conventional hero.

Prime Video lists season 1 as an eight-episode adult adventure/fantasy animation. Its credited cast includes Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, Ashley Johnson, Rahul Kohli and Dennis Fries. The listing also carries mature-content advisories for violence, frightening scenes, alcohol use, smoking, foul language and sexual content.

Good match for: Critical Role viewers, tabletop gamers, adult-animation fans and anyone who enjoys a fantasy ensemble with an adventuring-party structure.

3. Train Dreams — Netflix

Train Dreams is the most restrained and literary film in this group. Netflix describes it as a 2025 PG-13 drama about a logger experiencing love and loss during a period of sweeping change in early-20th-century America. Joel Edgerton stars alongside Felicity Jones and William H. Macy.

The film adapts Denis Johnson’s novella and follows Robert Grainier, a Pacific Northwest logger and railroad worker whose life unfolds against industrial and social transformation. Clint Bentley directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Greg Kwedar. Rather than using historical change as background for a conventional action plot, the film focuses on the way large forces reshape an ordinary person’s life.

This is a better choice for viewers who want atmosphere, character development and a reflective adaptation than for anyone seeking rapid pacing or franchise spectacle. If the film sends you back to its source, the Train Dreams Denis Johnson book is the natural companion read; the movie’s connection to Johnson’s novella is confirmed by Netflix’s official editorial material.

Good match for: viewers who like literary adaptations, understated historical dramas, period settings and emotionally observant stories.

4. The Roses — Hulu

The Roses turns an apparently ideal marriage into an adult comedy-drama about resentment, insults and domestic chaos. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play the couple at its center, with Andy Samberg, Allison Janney and Belinda Bromilow also appearing. Jay Roach directs.

Hulu’s official synopsis starts with a seemingly perfect couple whose relationship is threatened by an approaching storm. The film’s appeal is the collision between polished appearances and serious relationship problems underneath. It is not simply a breezy romantic comedy: the jokes sit alongside sharper dramatic tension and the possibility that the marriage may not survive the conflict.

The original guide identified Hulu as the U.S. destination and noted that Disney+ availability outside the U.S. was expected later. That is a regional distinction, not a universal catalog rule. Viewers outside the United States should check Disney+ or their local listings rather than assume the Hulu release applies to them.

Good match for: adults who want a dark relationship comedy, prominent performers and a story that moves between domestic absurdity and genuine marital strain.

5. After the Hunt — Prime Video

Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt is the most overtly issue-driven thriller on the list. Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield lead a story in which a professor confronts a student’s sexual-assault accusation against a colleague. The film engages with consent, guilt, innocence and cancel culture through a shifting, multi-perspective narrative.

This is one to approach with a content note rather than as uncomplicated entertainment. The central accusation and the questions around it are the engine of the drama, and the film asks viewers to reassess what they think they know about the people involved.

The response was divided in the original editorial assessment. Some viewers and critics found the multiple perspectives interesting; others felt that the approach diluted the seriousness of the subject matter. Those observations describe the reception reported in the November 2025 guide and should not be confused with a current independently verified aggregate score.

Good match for: viewers interested in contemporary psychological thrillers, morally difficult subject matter and major-star dramas that invite argument afterward.

6. The Family Plan 2 — Apple TV

For the most accessible light-entertainment option, choose The Family Plan 2. Mark Wahlberg returns as Dan, a former assassin trying to enjoy a family holiday while a new threat, played by Kit Harington, disrupts the trip. The action moves through London and Paris, and the family now knows about Dan’s past rather than remaining unaware of it.

The sequel combines a family vacation, holiday setting and action-comedy complications. That makes it a natural pick when the household wants something broader and less demanding than a psychological thriller or historical drama. It also builds on the first film’s central joke and tension: Dan is trying to be an ordinary family man while his exceptional past keeps catching up with him.

Apple’s listing identifies the film as a 2025 release with a runtime of 1 hour 46 minutes. The original guide used the label Apple TV; service branding and availability should be checked at the time you publish or update the article.

Good match for: family movie night, viewers who enjoy recognizable sequels and anyone looking for holiday action without a heavy dramatic commitment.

7. A Man on the Inside season 2 — Netflix

A Man on the Inside season 2 is the best choice for a warm, low-stress binge. Netflix Tudum says the second season premiered on November 20, 2025, with Ted Danson’s Charles Nieuwendyk returning as a retired professor who has become a private investigator.

This time Charles goes undercover at Wheeler College. The case involves a stolen laptop, a threatened college president, a major donor and a blackmail scheme. The setting supplies a new group of suspects while allowing returning allies and the show’s established character relationships to continue.

The returning ensemble includes Mary Steenburgen, Gary Cole, Max Greenfield, David Strathairn and Stephanie Beatriz, among others. Season 2 is the better pick if you enjoyed the first season’s combination of amateur detection, gentle humor and an older protagonist navigating an unfamiliar social world. New viewers may prefer to begin with season 1 so Charles’s personal and investigative history has its full context.

Good match for: viewers who want a mystery without an especially grim tone, fans of Ted Danson and anyone looking for a complete season to watch in a relaxed weekend.
