This was a historical streaming guide for the first weekend of August 2024—not a current August 2026 watchlist. The seven featured releases arrived across Netflix, Apple TV+, Max, and Prime Video between Thursday, August 8, and Sunday, August 11. For documentary viewers, the standout is Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth?, a three-part true-crime series about an unresolved Iowa case. The broader lineup also includes a superhero finale, a heist comedy, reality dating, a finance drama, children’s programming, and a sunny detective series.
Release timing and catalog availability were accurate to the original 2024 weekend. Streaming rights, subscription requirements, and availability may have changed since then.
At a glance: the seven August 2024 releases

The Hargreeves siblings returned for the concluding chapter of Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comic books. After the timeline reset at the end of season 3, the family begins this final season without the powers that defined much of the earlier story. Netflix describes season 4 as the end of the Hargreeves’ story, making it the clearest choice here for viewers who want a returning genre series that is actually reaching a definitive finale.
The appeal is less about conventional superhero spectacle than about an ensemble family dealing with alternate-timeline mythology, estrangement, and the consequences of repeatedly trying to save the world. New viewers should begin with season 1 rather than treating season 4 as a standalone watch.
If the comics are part of your interest, you can explore The Umbrella Academy graphic novel as source material. Reading it is not required to understand the television series, and the adaptation should be treated as its own version of the story.
Love Is Blind: UK season 1

The British edition of Netflix’s dating experiment brought single contestants into the “pods,” where they dated and formed emotional connections without seeing one another. Couples could become engaged before meeting face to face; after that, the series tested whether those relationships survived shared living arrangements, ordinary social pressures, and wedding-day decisions. Emma and Matt Willis hosted the UK edition.
There is an important timing detail: this was not a complete season available all at once on August 9. Netflix released episodes 1–4 on August 7, followed by episodes 5–9 on August 14 and episodes 10–11 on August 21. It was therefore an ongoing weekly event during the weekend covered by the original guide.
This is the natural pick for viewers who enjoy relationship conflict, group dynamics, and the mechanics of a televised social experiment more than scripted plot. It is also the least suitable choice if you prefer a finished story you can binge in one sitting.

The Instigators
Released: August 9, 2024
Platform: Apple TV+
Rating: R
Format: Action comedy

Matt Damon plays Rory, a desperate father, while Casey Affleck plays Cobby, an ex-convict. The reluctant partners attempt to steal money linked to a corrupt politician, but the robbery goes wrong and forces them into a chaotic escape. They eventually recruit Rory’s therapist, adding another unwilling participant to the increasingly unstable getaway.
Directed by Doug Liman, the film is the most straightforward movie recommendation in this seven-title package: a star-led crime caper with a mismatched-partner setup rather than a story that requires several episodes of commitment. The cast also includes Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow, and Ron Perlman.
The premise supports calling it a buddy or reluctant-partner comedy, but that description is not a substitute for an independent quality assessment. Viewers should also note the R rating before choosing it for a family movie night.

Apple positions the series around helping children learn, laugh, and grow, making it the family-safe selection among these seven releases. Max
Industry season 3
Premiere: August 11, 2024
Platform: Max and HBO
Format: Scripted finance and workplace drama; eight episodes
Unlike most of the titles here, Industry season 3 had not premiered when the original August 9 guide was published. Its first episode was scheduled for Sunday, August 11, with subsequent episodes arriving weekly.
The new season follows Yasmin, Robert, and Eric as Pierpoint moves toward ethical investing and becomes involved with Lumi, a green-tech energy company led by Sir Henry Muck, played by Kit Harington. Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey, and Ken Leung were among the returning principal cast cited in HBO’s announcement.
This is the strongest choice for viewers who want morally complicated young professionals, financial maneuvering, workplace competition, and prestige-style drama. It is not a documentary about finance: the central appeal is its fictional portrayal of power, status, money, and personal compromise.

For documentary and true-crime viewers, this is the most directly relevant title in the lineup. The series examines the 2012 abduction and deaths of Iowa cousins Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins. Filmmaker Dylan Sire directed the documentary; the TechRadar guide identified him as a former news photographer who had worked on the case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The case remained open as of 2024, with Iowa investigators continuing to review tips. That distinction matters: the documentary should be approached as an examination of an unresolved case, not as a claim that the series solved the killings or established an adjudicated suspect. Viewers should also keep in mind that true-crime documentaries present a particular editorial interpretation of evidence and testimony.
Its three-part structure makes it a suitable weekend documentary watch, but the subject involves the deaths of children and may be distressing. Check the program’s content warnings if you are sensitive to discussions of child abduction, murder, or grieving families.

The Mallorca Files season 3
Released: August 8, 2024
Platform: Prime Video
Format: Detective drama
Season 3 returned the Mallorca-set crime series to Prime Video, continuing its lighter, scenic approach to detective storytelling. BBC Studios describes the show as a feel-good detective drama, while the setting supplies sunny Spanish landscapes and a contrast to the darker true-crime material on Max.
This is the pick for viewers who want episodic crime cases without the relentlessly grim mood often associated with the genre. “Feel-good” here is the show’s genre positioning, not a measured critical verdict: the crimes and investigations remain central, but the overall tone is intended to be breezier and more accessible.
