Best overall: Tubi. It offers the simplest free, legal way to choose on-demand movies and TV shows. Choose Pluto TV or Xumo Play for live channel surfing, The Roku Channel for a hybrid experience, Plex to combine streaming with your own media library, YouTube for official niche programming, and Kanopy for ad-free library and university access.
This guide is for U.S. viewers. “Free” normally means legal, ad-supported streaming; catalogs, device support and licensing change frequently.

FAST means “free ad-supported television.” These services earn revenue from commercial breaks instead of a monthly subscription. They do not provide the same catalog as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max or Prime Video, and titles move in and out as licenses change.
1. Tubi: best overall for on-demand movies and TV
Tubi is the strongest starting point when you already know what you want to watch—or simply want a large free catalog to browse. It carries movies, television, genre collections and children’s programming from licensors including Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM. Those partnerships and any title count are promotional snapshots, not a guarantee that a particular film will remain available.

2. Pluto TV: best for live channel surfing
Pluto TV feels most like cable television. Its electronic guide presents themed movie, news, sports and entertainment channels, while an on-demand area lets you start selected titles immediately.
- Best for: Background viewing, classic television and spontaneous channel surfing.
- Strength: You can browse a schedule without deciding on a specific film first.
- Trade-off: A scheduled channel may make you wait for the program you want, and the lineup changes by market and date.
Do not rely on a permanent channel-count claim; Pluto’s U.S. lineup changes over time. Use the official service at pluto.tv.
3. The Roku Channel: best hybrid service
The Roku Channel combines free on-demand movies and shows with live channels. It is especially convenient on Roku players and Roku TVs, but it is also available on selected non-Roku devices.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Best for: Roku owners who want one place for live and on-demand viewing.
- Available programming: Free movies, classic programs, live channels and selected current-season episodes. Episode availability is title-specific and temporary.

4. Xumo Play: best for no-login viewing
Xumo Play is the easiest choice when you do not want to register. Xumo says no subscription, account, login or credit card is required, and advertising funds the service; there is no ad-free version.
- Best for: Starting live television with minimal setup.
- Experience: A live guide plus on-demand categories such as action, comedy, documentaries, kids and family, classics, horror, Westerns and international programming.
- Catalog qualification: Official Xumo pages publish different channel and title figures, so treat counts as changing estimates rather than permanent specifications.
- Trade-off: Linear channels are more prominent than deep, carefully curated on-demand browsing.
See Xumo Play, its free-movie section, and Xumo’s explanations of account requirements and advertising. Parental-control features should be checked on the current app version; older support documentation described limitations.
5. Plex: best for free streaming plus personal media
Plex combines a free, ad-supported catalog and live channels with tools for organizing your own video files. That makes it more useful than a typical FAST app for households that already run a personal media server.
- Best for: Keeping personal collections and free streaming in one interface.
- Free features: On-demand movies and TV, live channels, watchlists and personalization.
- Trade-off: Plex’s free catalog, personal-server tools and optional Plex Pass features are separate products and can be confusing. Its free selection is not designed around the newest mainstream releases.
- Devices: Streaming players, smart TVs, phones, tablets and game consoles, with features varying by platform.
Read Plex’s free-versus-paid explanation, its live-TV overview and on-demand service.
6. YouTube: best for official niche programming
YouTube is not one curated free-movie catalog. Official studios, broadcasters, distributors, museums, creators and public-interest channels upload full films, episodes, documentaries and web series, alongside clips and paid listings.

- Want broad on-demand choice? Start with Tubi.
- Want a cable-like guide? Try Pluto TV or Xumo Play.
- Own a Roku? The Roku Channel is the most integrated option.
- Have a personal media collection? Choose Plex.
- Want documentaries or independent cinema? Check Kanopy first, then Plex or YouTube’s official channels.
- Want no registration? Xumo Play is the clearest choice; Tubi also allows basic free viewing without payment.
Are free streaming apps legal and safe?
Official apps such as Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Plex, YouTube and Kanopy are legitimate services. Use the company’s official website or your device’s official app store. Avoid websites promising current theatrical releases for free, unofficial APKs, torrent indexes and browser tools that bypass licensing or regional restrictions.
Legal does not mean ad-free or data-free. Services may collect information for account operation, personalization and advertising. Review privacy settings, use available profiles or PINs for children, and remember that parental controls differ substantially between apps.

How to find one particular movie or show
- Search the title in Tubi.
- Check Pluto TV and The Roku Channel for both free on-demand listings and scheduled channels.
- Search Plex and Xumo Play.
- Use YouTube only after verifying an official uploader or rights-holder channel.
- Check Kanopy if you have participating library or university access.
- Confirm the listing says free, not rent, buy or subscription.
A title may be unavailable because its license expired, it is restricted to another country or device, or the app is showing a partner’s paid listing. Searching two or more official services is more reliable than trusting an old article or a permanent catalog claim.
Important limitations
- Free services rarely carry brand-new theatrical releases; those generally appear first as rentals, purchases or subscription titles.
- Ads vary by service, title, device and date. A short viewing session is not a permanent measure of ad load.
- Catalogs and subtitles change, and availability can differ by country or even device.
- Offline downloads are not a standard feature of free FAST services; verify support for the exact app and platform.
- These apps are not guaranteed substitutes for local broadcast channels. For local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or PBS, check station apps, an antenna and market-specific listings.
- Amazon’s former Freevee branding has increasingly been folded into the Prime Video experience; check the current Amazon interface rather than assuming a separate Freevee app remains available.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Tubi says its service is legal, ad-supported and usable without a subscription or credit card. An account is optional for basic viewing.
Which app has the fewest ads?
There is no permanent winner. Ad load changes by title, service, device and date, so avoid treating one-time comparisons as a lasting specification.
Can I watch without creating an account?
Xumo Play explicitly requires no account or login. Tubi permits basic viewing without payment; other apps may request sign-in for personalization or particular features.
Do I need a Roku device?
No. Most services support a mix of web browsers, phones, smart TVs, streaming players and consoles. Compatibility depends on the app, device model, operating system and country.
