The internet can turn a TV, computer, phone, tablet, or game console into a home entertainment hub. You can stream films and shows, watch live channels, listen to audio, play games, follow creators, or access a personal media library. The right mix depends on what your household actually enjoys, which devices you own, and how much you want to spend—not on how many subscriptions you can collect.
This guide is for U.S. households; prices, catalogs, sports rights, and availability vary by location and change over time.
Six ways to use the internet for entertainment
- Watch movies and TV on demand: choose a film or episode whenever you like.
- Watch live TV, news, and sports: stream channels and events as they happen.
- Listen to music, podcasts, radio, and audiobooks: play audio on phones, TVs, speakers, or other devices.
- Play downloadable, multiplayer, and cloud games: use a console, computer, or supported connected device.
- Follow creators, educational channels, and live communities: watch tutorials, niche shows, livestreams, and events.
- Stream your own media: organize and play legally owned films, music, photos, and home videos around the home.
What you need to get started
At minimum, you need a reliable internet connection and a device that can play the content: a smart TV, streaming player, game console, computer, phone, or tablet. Many services require an account; subscriptions, rentals, and purchases also require a payment method. A smart TV is convenient, but it is not essential—Netflix, for example, lists TVs, consoles, streaming players, cable boxes, mobile devices, tablets, and browsers among supported device categories (Netflix device support).

How much internet speed is enough?
There is no single number that guarantees a good experience. A stable connection for one HD video stream is a different requirement from several simultaneous 4K streams or cloud gaming. Wi-Fi quality, router placement, network congestion, latency, data caps, and the number of people online all matter. Music and podcasts are generally more tolerant of modest connections; cloud gaming is especially sensitive to responsiveness and stability, not just download speed.
Sony says PlayStation Plus cloud streaming needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and 15 Mbps for 1080p, on its U.S. plan page (PlayStation Plus). Treat that as a service-specific minimum, not a promise that every home network will feel responsive. For cloud games and live events, leave headroom for other household use. If a service buffers, try Ethernet or move closer to the router before assuming your broadband plan is too slow.
1. Stream movies and TV shows on demand
On-demand video lets you pick a movie or series and play it when you want. Subscription services combine originals with licensed titles, while some films may be available only to rent or buy. Netflix describes its service as subscription streaming to internet-connected devices and says selected titles can be downloaded on supported devices and plans (Netflix help). Apple TV focuses on Apple Originals, films, and selected live programming, but a subscription does not automatically include third-party subscriptions or every rental and purchase offered through the Apple TV app (Apple TV U.S.).
Best for: households that want movies and series without planning around a broadcast schedule. What to check: search for the specific title before subscribing; catalogs differ by country and change as licensing deals expire. Compare ad-supported and ad-free plans, simultaneous streams, household rules, parental controls, and download availability. Downloads can help during travel or an unreliable connection, but are usually limited to selected titles and devices.
The upside is convenience and a large, searchable catalog. The trade-offs are fragmented exclusives, rotating availability, ads on some tiers, and recurring fees. Consider rotating one paid service at a time rather than keeping several idle subscriptions. If you want a particular title that is not included, compare a rental or purchase with another month of subscription access.
2. Watch live TV, news, and sports
Internet-delivered live-TV services bundle broadcast and cable-style channels, often with news, sports, and a cloud DVR. YouTube TV describes its U.S. main plan as offering more than 100 channels, unlimited DVR storage, six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams; plan details and prices can change (YouTube TV). An antenna can complement streaming by bringing in local over-the-air broadcasts where reception allows.

Best for: viewers who want channel surfing, live events, or a cable-like package. Before subscribing, check local channel availability by ZIP code, whether the specific team or league is carried, blackout rules, DVR restrictions, and the cost of sports or premium add-ons. National coverage does not guarantee access to every local game.
Live-TV bundles can be among the more expensive streaming choices. The YouTube TV page observed in the research displayed a regular price of $82.99 per month and a temporary introductory offer; promotions expire, so verify the current price and what it becomes after the offer. A cheaper mix may be an antenna for local channels plus an on-demand service or a league-specific option, if it covers the events you want.
3. Listen to music, podcasts, radio, and audiobooks
Audio services provide music catalogs, playlists, podcasts, internet radio, and—in some services or apps—audiobooks. You can listen on a phone with headphones, a smart speaker, a TV, a console, or a multi-room speaker setup. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists features such as ad-free listening, offline downloads, and lossless audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz; availability and plan features are market- and device-dependent (Spotify Premium). Apple lists Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books among its services (Apple services).
Best for: commutes, background listening, focused listening, and spoken-word entertainment. A free tier may be enough if ads and limits are acceptable. Compare catalog, discovery tools, audio quality, family plans, device compatibility, and whether audiobooks are included or subject to a separate allowance. Downloading can help on trips or with data limits, though offline access may depend on an active subscription.
Streaming is convenient, but paid access usually licenses listening rather than giving you permanent ownership of every track. If keeping a collection matters, consider purchased downloads, physical albums, library audiobook services, or music files you own. For room-filling sound, speakers or a soundbar matter more than adding another service.
4. Play downloadable, multiplayer, and cloud games
Internet-connected gaming includes buying and downloading titles, subscribing to rotating game catalogs, playing online with others, and streaming games from remote servers without installing them locally. Free-to-play games can make this category accessible, although optional in-game purchases may still cost money.

Xbox says cloud gaming works on selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices. Supported free-to-play games such as Fortnite can be played with a free Microsoft account, while broader access requires a Game Pass subscription; performance varies with connection, location, and device (Xbox Cloud Gaming). PlayStation Plus offers U.S. tiers, with Extra adding a Game Catalog and Premium adding Classics, trials, cloud streaming, and other benefits. Sony notes that cloud streaming is limited to supported games and gives service-specific connection guidance (PlayStation Plus; PS5 cloud streaming).
Best for: players who want interactive entertainment, whether alone, with friends, or with family. Downloading games avoids streaming latency but uses storage and takes time. Cloud gaming avoids large downloads and can work on more kinds of devices, but image quality and control response depend on latency, Wi-Fi interference, location, and service support. Use Ethernet if practical for competitive play, check controller compatibility, and confirm whether multiplayer requires a separate console membership.
Subscription catalogs are useful for trying games, but titles can leave and access usually ends when a membership does. Buying a game has a higher upfront cost, but it is not the same as streaming access; platform licensing and compatibility still apply. Check the current catalog and terms before joining for one specific game.

Platforms such as YouTube combine creator-made shows, tutorials, documentaries, music videos, livestreams, and niche communities. Much of this is free to watch with ads. Live chats, watch-alongs, and virtual events add an interactive element that traditional TV does not usually provide.
Best for: people with specific interests, learners looking for demonstrations, and viewers who enjoy following individual creators or live events. Subscriptions, playlists, and watch-later queues can make a large catalog easier to navigate. For children, use age-appropriate settings and parental controls; autoplay can extend viewing beyond what you intended.
The variety is a strength, but production quality and accuracy vary. Treat health, financial, political, and technical claims critically, and look for official channels when following an event or instructions. Advertising, recommendation loops, privacy concerns, and copyright removals are additional trade-offs. Curated services, public broadcasters, library databases, and professionally edited podcasts offer alternatives when you want more controlled selection.

6. Organize and stream your own media collection
A personal media setup can make legally owned films, music, home videos, and photos available on multiple devices. One option is Plex Media Server, which organizes a personal library and connects it to supported players. Plex says its basic personal-media functionality is free and also offers free ad-supported movies, TV, and live programming; compatible antenna-and-tuner setups can add over-the-air broadcasts (Plex free vs. paid).

You need storage, a device to run the server, and compatible playback apps. A wired server connection can improve reliability. Use consistent filenames, keep a separate backup, update software, use strong account security, and avoid exposing unnecessary services directly to the public internet. Only add media you have the legal right to possess and stream.
A personal library reduces dependence on changing subscription catalogs, but it requires setup, maintenance, storage, and backups; some files may also need transcoding that a server device cannot handle smoothly. For a simpler setup, connect a computer or external drive directly to the TV or use supported USB playback.
Choose a mix that fits your household

- Families: prioritize profiles, children’s settings, simultaneous streams, and a mix of video, music, educational content, and casual games.
- Sports fans: start with the team or league’s rights and local coverage, then compare a live-TV package, targeted service, and antenna. Do not assume one subscription covers every game.
- Budget-conscious households: combine free ad-supported video, creator content, podcasts, library services where available, free-to-play games, and one rotating paid subscription.
- Gamers: compare buying games with subscription catalogs, check multiplayer requirements, and use downloads if cloud latency is troublesome.
- Music listeners: weigh discovery and offline listening against audio quality, device support, and whether you want streaming access or owned files.
- Movie collectors: consider local storage and a media server only if you are willing to manage backups, updates, and security.
- Social households: livestreams, shared playlists, and community platforms can make entertainment more participatory, but check privacy and account settings.
Budget for the whole setup, not just the subscription
Count the internet plan, playback hardware, service subscriptions, rentals or purchases, optional premium features, and personal-media storage. Cutting cable does not automatically cut costs: a live-TV bundle, several on-demand subscriptions, sports add-ons, and a game membership can add up. Prices below are examples observed in the U.S. research, not guaranteed current offers: Apple TV listed $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial; Spotify Premium Individual showed $12.99 per month after a promotional trial; YouTube TV showed a regular main-plan price of $82.99 per month alongside a dated introductory offer. The pages should be checked before signing up (Apple TV, Spotify, YouTube TV).
PlayStation Plus U.S. monthly tiers shown in the research were Essential at $10.99, Extra at $16.99, and Premium at $19.99, with annual options also listed; Xbox announced April 21, 2026, that Game Pass Ultimate would be $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass $13.99 per month, with regional variation (Sony; Xbox announcement). Confirm current prices, taxes, plan terms, and promotions directly with each provider.

A nearly free setup can use YouTube, free ad-supported services, podcasts, free-to-play games, eligible library services, and media you already own. A balanced household might choose one video service and one audio service, then use free creator content and buy or subscribe to games selectively. A sports-heavy household may need a live-TV service, but should compare its regular price with an antenna and specific sports options. A collector setup adds local storage and backup costs; it is not a zero-maintenance alternative.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Library streaming is not universal: access depends on your library system, membership, licensing, and sometimes borrowing limits. Likewise, free usually means trade-offs such as ads, limited catalogs, account requirements, data collection, or hardware costs. Compare the complete monthly and upfront cost rather than the word “free” or the introductory price.
When streaming does not work well
Video buffers or looks poor
- Try the same service on another device to see whether the problem is device-specific.
- Move closer to the router or use Ethernet if practical.
- Restart the app and, if needed, the modem and router.
- Pause other downloads, cloud backups, or streams; lower video quality temporarily.
- Check whether one service is affected or the whole connection is slow, and whether a VPN or DNS setting is involved.
- If the issue persists across devices and services, contact your internet provider after isolating the home network as much as possible.
Cloud gaming feels delayed
Check latency and Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic, controller connection, device support, and whether the game is available for cloud play. A speed test can show bandwidth, but it cannot by itself guarantee responsive controls. Xbox warns that cloud-streaming performance varies by internet connection, user location, and device (Xbox Cloud Gaming).
A title is missing or unavailable
It may not be included in the current subscription catalog, may require a rental or purchase, or may be limited by country, licensing, sports blackouts, or an add-on. Check the service’s current listing before paying; availability and rights change.

Check the device’s operating-system support and app store, browser or DRM compatibility, the plan’s limits, and whether the older device supports the desired picture or sound format. If household members interfere with each other’s viewing, set up separate profiles and children’s profiles, then check simultaneous-stream, download-device, household, and payment-control rules.
Keep subscription fatigue in check
Choose a core service only for the content you use regularly, then add live-TV or sports access when there is a clear need. Rotate on-demand subscriptions around release schedules, and keep a simple list of renewal dates and regular post-promotion prices. An annual plan makes sense only if you expect to use the service consistently. Before subscribing for a single show, game, or event, compare the subscription cost with a rental, purchase, or another legal way to watch.
