Start by checking the exact warning. If the Reel is still visible and says “Audio unavailable”, use Instagram’s built-in Replace audio option before deleting anything. If the Reel was removed entirely, check Account Status and the copyright notification. Other causes include copyrighted music embedded in the exported video, account or regional restrictions, an accidental audio setting, or an upload-processing error.
Instagram can mute a Reel after publication when music-rights agreements change, even if the track worked during editing and immediately after upload. A song selected from Instagram’s library is not guaranteed to remain available forever. Instagram explains that licensed audio may later be muted when agreements with rights holders change.

Instagram’s labels and menu locations can differ by iPhone or Android device, account, country, and app version. The paths below follow Instagram’s current Help Center guidance but may not look identical for every user.

1. Replace the muted audio inside Instagram
Use this when the Reel is still published and displays “Audio unavailable” or a similar muted-audio message.

- Open Instagram and go to the affected Reel.
- Tap Audio unavailable.
- Tap Replace audio.
- Tap Replace audio again if Instagram asks for confirmation.
- Choose an available track from Instagram’s library.
- Select the section of the track you want to use.
- Tap Done and save the change.
Instagram says this replacement flow applies to muted Reels, and the replacement can generally be made only once. Preserve your original video before using it.
This tool replaces the unavailable audio track; it does not promise to reconstruct a lost mix of speech, ambient sound, and music. If your voice was part of the affected mix, keep a clean master file so you can rebuild the Reel if necessary. Replacing the track also does not guarantee that the Reel will recover its previous reach, audio-page placement, or recommendation eligibility.
2. Remove copyrighted music embedded in the uploaded video
This is different from adding music through Instagram’s composer. If a song was already mixed into a video exported from CapCut, Premiere Pro, InShot, Canva, or another editor, Instagram can identify it after upload—even if the file is labelled original audio.

- Open the original project in your video editor.
- Mute or remove the commercial song.
- Keep your own speech, sound effects, or ambient recording.
- Export a clean version.
- Play the exported file outside Instagram to confirm that the intended audio is present.
- Upload the clean video and, if appropriate, add music through Instagram’s available tools.
Do not rely on lowering the volume, changing the speed or pitch, or adding background noise to evade detection. Those changes do not create permission to use the recording. A song bought for personal listening, or licensed for another platform, does not normally provide the separate rights needed to publish it in an Instagram Reel.
3. Check account, country, and commercial-use restrictions
If the song cannot be found in the Reel composer—or other people can use it while you cannot—check whether the restriction is tied to the account, location, or purpose of the post.
- Search for the same song in the Reel composer.
- Check whether the account is personal, creator, or business.
- See whether one track fails or the entire music library is limited.
- Ask a viewer in another country whether the Reel has sound.
- Consider whether the Reel is branded, promotional, client work, or intended for advertising.
Meta says its licensed music library is intended for personal, non-commercial use and that certain business accounts and post types may have restricted access. The library can also vary by country or region. This does not mean every business account is unable to use popular music, nor does switching account types automatically solve a rights problem.
For commercial content, use audio that is explicitly cleared for that use. Meta directs accounts without access to the full licensed library toward Sound Collection, which Meta describes as containing more than 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds for uses such as ads. Catalogues and availability can change. “Royalty-free” is not a universal licence: always check the actual terms, including Instagram, advertising, client, and geographic permissions.

Rights are location-dependent. Meta notes that a Reel’s audio may be available to some viewers but not others. Your own playback therefore does not prove that every audience member can hear the track.
4. Check Account Status and appeal only when the removal is wrong
A muted Reel is not the same as a Reel removed for copyright. If the video itself disappeared, open the removal notification and Account Status:
- Open your Instagram profile.
- Open the menu.
- Open Settings and activity, or the equivalent current settings screen.
- Find Account Status.
- Review Removed content and Features you can’t use.
- Choose Request a review if Instagram provides that option.
Account Status can show removed content, restrictions, and available review options.

If Instagram identifies a formal copyright report, follow the instructions in the associated notification. Instagram treats copyright appeals—and, where applicable, U.S. DMCA counter-notifications—as separate processes. A counter-notification is a legal procedure, not a routine method for fixing a muted Reel, so do not submit one unless its legal requirements genuinely apply.

Use this when the Reel has no audible sound, the replacement control is missing, an upload repeatedly fails, or there is no rights warning. Re-exporting is a practical recovery step, not a guaranteed Meta-supported repair for a “corrupted” audio track.
- Save the original video and project file.
- Confirm that the source video contains sound and is not muted in your phone’s gallery or editor.
- Play the exported file outside Instagram.
- Re-export the file, avoiding unnecessary layers of duplicated music.
- Update Instagram.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Upload the clean export as a test Reel or new post.
- Add permitted music inside Instagram only after confirming that the clean upload plays correctly.
Test the Reel from another account or device. If every Reel is silent, check phone media volume, Bluetooth or connected headphones, and playback on another device. If only one song fails, track-specific rights or a false match is more likely than a general app failure.

Reposting may produce a playable version, but it loses the original comments, shares, reach, and useful evidence—and it will not solve an underlying licensing restriction.

6. Report an incorrect match or technical failure
Report the problem when the audio is your own speech, music, or sound effects, or when you have a valid licence and the Reel appears to have been muted incorrectly.
Collect this information first
- The exact warning text.
- The Reel URL.
- When the audio worked and when it disappeared.
- Your device and Instagram app behaviour.
- Whether the issue affects one Reel or multiple uploads.
- The original project, raw recording, purchase receipt, licence, or permission document.
Report the problem
- Open your profile and the menu.
- Go to Help.
- Tap Report a problem.
- Describe the warning, device, Reel URL, and evidence of ownership or licensing.
Meta recommends reporting unresolved Instagram problems after standard troubleshooting. You can write:
My Reel’s original audio was removed after upload. The audio is my own recording / is licensed for Instagram use. It worked during editing and preview. Reel URL: [insert URL]. Please review the audio match and restore the track if this was an error.

Reporting does not guarantee restoration, and an appeal will not necessarily preserve the Reel’s previous distribution. Use it when the facts support your claim rather than as a reflexive response to an unlicensed commercial song.
Prevent future audio removals
- Use genuinely original audio or music cleared for the exact way you will publish it.
- Keep a clean master video with voice and ambient sound separated from music.
- Save licences and permission records with the project.
- Check that a track is available for your account and region before publishing.
- For branded posts and ads, verify commercial and advertising rights separately.
- Avoid embedding commercially released songs unless your licence expressly covers Instagram.
- Do not assume that “original audio,” “royalty-free,” or a purchased download means unrestricted use.
- Review important published Reels periodically because music agreements can change after publication.
What the message usually tells you
“Audio unavailable” generally means Instagram has disabled access to the affected track while leaving the Reel visible. Start with replacement. A fully removed Reel requires the removal notice and Account Status, not just audio editing. No sound during playback may be a device, volume, export, app, or processing problem. Sound for one viewer but not another can result from country-specific rights.
The least destructive order is: identify the warning, determine whether the Reel is muted or removed, establish whether music was added inside Instagram or embedded before upload, check account and region limits, preserve the source, then replace, rebuild, report, or appeal as the evidence warrants.
