Short answer: Apple TV+ offers the clearest legitimate sharing option through Apple Family Sharing. Netflix and Disney+ permit some outside-household access through paid Extra Member add-ons. Amazon Prime Video is designed around household sharing, while Peacock may continue to work away from home but does not officially authorize sharing with people in another household.
That distinction matters. A service can allow several profiles or simultaneous streams without permitting one subscription to be used by unrelated households. The list below separates official family sharing, household use, paid sharing, and access that may work technically but conflicts with the provider’s published policy.
What “sharing your password” means in 2026
Streaming account sharing now falls into three different categories:
- Family sharing: People join an official family group and generally use their own login or account.
- Household sharing: People who live at the subscriber’s primary residence use the subscription.
- Outside-household sharing: Someone in another home uses the account without an approved add-on or family feature.
Only the first two are routinely included without an extra charge, and household sharing is not the same as giving your password to a friend who lives elsewhere. A plan’s number of simultaneous streams describes technical capacity—not permission to operate multiple households.

1. Apple TV+: the clearest legitimate family-sharing option
Apple TV+ is the strongest example of a service that still supports sharing without asking everyone to use one master password. Apple allows eligible subscriptions to be shared through Apple Family Sharing.
An Apple Family Sharing group can contain up to six people total: the organizer plus up to five additional members. Members must generally use Apple Accounts associated with the same home country or region. They do not need to share one Apple Account password; each person should use their own Apple Account.
On current Apple devices, the setup is typically found under Settings > [your name] > Family or Family Sharing, followed by Add Member. Invite the other person’s Apple Account and confirm that subscription sharing is enabled. Menu labels can vary by operating-system version.

This is family-group sharing, not an unrestricted invitation to unrelated households around the world. Also check the specific subscription: Apple says some subscriptions available through the Apple TV app and some third-party subscriptions do not support Family Sharing. Apple’s media-services terms provide the relevant country and family-group conditions.

2. Netflix: outside-household sharing now means Extra Member
Netflix does not permit ordinary account sharing outside the household. Its Netflix Household is based on the devices and people associated with the subscriber’s primary place of residence.
However, eligible Standard and Premium subscribers in many countries can purchase an Extra Member slot. The added person receives a separate login and can generally use a profile of their own. The Extra Member usually must be activated in the same country as the account owner.
Availability depends on the plan and billing arrangement. Netflix says Extra Members are not supported on ad-supported plans, and some partner-billed or bundled accounts cannot add them. The current price is account- and market-specific, so check the Extra Member option in the account rather than relying on an old price list.
In other words, Netflix has not preserved free password circulation. It has created a controlled, paid route for some people who live elsewhere. Read Netflix’s account-sharing explanation alongside its current help page before changing plans.

3. Disney+: a paid route for one person outside the home
Disney+ similarly defines a household around devices associated with the subscriber’s primary personal residence and the people who live there. Its subscriber agreement generally prohibits sharing outside the household unless the applicable service tier permits it.
For eligible subscriptions, Disney+ offers an Extra Member add-on for one person outside the household. That person receives a separate login and password rather than needing the account owner’s main credentials.
Eligibility restrictions are important. The Extra Member must generally be at least 18, live in the same country or region, and not already maintain certain Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscriptions. Some bundles—including particular Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, and Disney+, Hulu, Max packages—are excluded. Check the current account-management or signup page for the applicable price and eligibility.
Disney also distinguishes travel from permanent outside-household use. When a household member is away, the service may offer an “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” path or request verification, as described in its household guidance. Travel access is not a substitute for permanently sharing with someone who lives elsewhere.

4. Amazon Prime Video: household sharing, not a blank check
Amazon Prime Video belongs on this list only with a qualification: the available evidence supports household-oriented sharing, not a clear promise that unrelated friends in separate homes may freely use one Prime password.
Amazon accounts can support shared household arrangements and multiple profiles or supported devices, but a profile is not a separate entitlement and simultaneous-stream capacity is not proof that multiple residences are authorized. Amazon’s available account-comparison material distinguishes household-style use from other account arrangements, but it does not establish unrestricted U.S. consumer password sharing. For practical purposes, Prime Video is best for people living together. If a relative or friend permanently lives elsewhere, do not assume that a login continuing to work means Amazon has approved the arrangement.

5. Peacock: it may work away from home, but that is not permission
Peacock is the weakest fit for a list of services that officially allow password sharing. Peacock’s household guidance says the service is intended for personal use within the household and directs people outside the household to create their own accounts.

A subscriber may still be able to watch while traveling or temporarily away from home on a supported device associated with the household. That can make Peacock appear shareable across locations. But “still works” is not the same as “allowed under the terms.” Peacock’s terms of service should be treated as the controlling reference.
Do not use Peacock as a safe loophole for a friend who routinely watches from another residence. Expect the policy or enforcement behavior to change without a promise that outside-household access will continue.
What happens when someone watches from another home?
Enforcement varies by service, device, plan, and billing method. Common results include:

- The service sends a temporary code to the account owner.
- A device must periodically connect from the primary household.
- A profile is blocked, logged out, or prompted to create a separate account.
- Mobile access works during travel while a living-room TV receives stricter checks.
- A bundle or third-party-billed subscription lacks the sharing feature available to direct subscribers.
A college student, traveling employee, vacation-home user, and permanent second-household user are not necessarily treated identically. Temporary travel is generally different from a person who uses the subscription every day from another residence, but the service—not the family relationship—decides how its household system responds.
Before you share: a safer decision checklist
- Use the official feature first. Choose Apple Family Sharing or an Extra Member option where available.
- Check the exact plan and billing route. App-store, carrier, cable, credit-card, and bundle subscriptions can have different eligibility rules.
- Do not reuse an important password. Never use the same credential for streaming, email, banking, or an Apple or Amazon account.
- Prefer separate logins. Profiles organize recommendations and viewing history, but they do not override household rules.
- Secure the account. Turn on two-factor authentication where supported, review signed-in devices, and remove former users.
- Protect recovery and billing details. Anyone using a master account may gain visibility into payment information, account recovery controls, parental settings, downloads, and viewing history.
Common assumptions that are wrong
- “Four streams means four households.” It does not. Stream limits regulate playback, not authorization.
- “A separate profile is a separate account.” It is usually only an organizational profile under the main subscription.
- “A family member can always use the account anywhere.” Family relationships do not automatically override country, household, or plan restrictions.
- “If the login works, it is permitted.” Enforcement may be delayed, inconsistent, or device-specific.
- “Every Apple TV subscription is shareable.” Apple Family Sharing applies to eligible Apple subscriptions, not automatically to every third-party subscription in the Apple TV app.
What the five options mean for your wallet
For a household that already uses Apple services, Apple Family Sharing can be the cleanest included option, and Apple One Family or Premier may add value if the group also wants Apple Music, iCloud+, or Apple Arcade. It is less compelling if the only goal is access to Apple TV+.
If one person outside the home needs regular Netflix or Disney+ access, an eligible Extra Member add-on is more reliable than circulating the main password. Compare its current account-specific price with a separate ad-supported subscription, which may cost less while giving the other viewer independent billing and access.
Another cost-control option is rotating subscriptions seasonally or using free, ad-supported services such as Pluto TV or Tubi when a premium catalog is not essential. Do not choose a more expensive plan solely because it offers additional simultaneous streams.
