For a focused starter watchlist, begin with Ford v Ferrari for endurance-racing engineering, Rush for Formula One rivalry, and Gran Turismo for a gamer-to-driver underdog story. Add Le Mans for a race-centered fictional film and Days of Thunder for stock-car drama. These films cover different sides of motorsport rather than forming an objective all-time ranking.

Best racing movies by the kind of story you want
For engineering and endurance racing: Ford v Ferrari
Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles work to build a Ford race car capable of challenging Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The film’s appeal is not just the contest on track: its central hook is the people, design decisions, and teamwork behind an endurance-racing effort. It is the strongest starting point here if you want a car film as much about building and preparing a machine as driving it.

For a Formula One rivalry: Rush
Rush focuses on the 1976 Formula One contest between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. The Le Mans organization describes the film as drawing on their real rivalry while also emphasizing friendship and respect. Choose it for a character-led sports drama built around two contrasting competitors, rather than a story about one team’s engineering project.
For the feeling of race day: Le Mans
Steve McQueen plays Porsche driver Michael Delaney in this 1971 fictional story set around the Le Mans race. Motorsport UK’s description makes the distinction clear: it is fiction, not a retelling of a documented real rivalry. Its place on this list is its race-centered premise and older-era setting.

For stock-car action: Days of Thunder
In Paramount’s synopsis, Cole Trickle is discovered by businessman Tim Daland, paired with crew chief and car-builder Harry Hogge, and enters the Winston Cup world, including the Daytona 500. It is the pick for a fictional driver-and-team story in a stock-car setting.
For a gamer-to-driver underdog story: Gran Turismo
Sony Pictures describes the 2023 film as based on the story of a gamer, a former race-car driver, and a motorsport executive joining forces to challenge elite motorsport. The premise links sim racing with real-world competition and makes this a natural choice for viewers curious about how a game-to-racing story is told. The studio’s “based on” framing should not be taken to mean every scene is a literal account.

Are these racing films true stories?
The films use different relationships to real events, so it is worth distinguishing a true-story premise from fiction. The sources cited here identify Ford v Ferrari and Gran Turismo as based on real stories; the 24 Hours of Le Mans organization describes Rush as depicting the real 1976 Hunt–Lauda duel. Motorsport UK calls Le Mans a fictional story, while Paramount’s synopsis presents Days of Thunder through its fictional characters and racing plot. These descriptions establish the films’ stated premises, not a scene-by-scene historical accuracy rating.
