Selma (2014): a focused voting-rights drama
Ava DuVernay’s historical drama stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. and follows the campaign for voting rights in 1965, including the dangerous marches from Selma to Montgomery. The U.S. Department of State’s American Spaces movie kit describes the film as a historical drama and lists it as PG-13 with a runtime of 2 hours and 8 minutes.

The setting matters: although the Civil Rights Act had passed in 1964, African Americans in some areas still faced barriers to voter registration. The Selma march protested that suppression and culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Selma is a dramatization of this campaign, not a documentary record of it.
King in the Wilderness (2018): the pressures of King’s final years
Directed by Peter Kunhardt, this documentary examines the period between passage of the Voting Rights Act and King’s assassination in 1968. It considers the political criticism King faced, his commitment to nonviolence, and the internal struggles that accompanied his public work.

Kunhardt Films says the film draws on conversations with King’s associates, archival footage, private video, photographs, and recorded calls between King and President Johnson. It debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
I Am MLK, Jr. (2018): a documentary about an enduring legacy
Directed by John Barbisan and Michael Hamilton, I Am MLK, Jr. combines King’s original recordings with reflections from figures including Andrew Young and Al Sharpton, alongside contemporary public voices. At 95 minutes, it offers a legacy-centered perspective rather than the sustained movement chronology of Eyes on the Prize. The runtime and film details are reported by Tom’s Guide.

The Rosa Parks Story: a different view of the movement
Julie Dash directed this television drama, written by Paris Qualles, with Angela Bassett as Rosa Parks and Dexter Scott King as Martin Luther King Jr. Its shift toward Parks helps show the movement as collective work rather than a story driven by King alone. It includes the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, which King led, while centering Parks’s experience.
Eyes on the Prize: the broadest movement history
PBS’s 14-part Eyes on the Prize uses historical footage and interviews with participants to trace the civil rights movement. Its episodes cover the Montgomery Bus Boycott, King’s emergence as a national leader, the Selma march, the Voting Rights Act, and developments beyond them. Grassroots activists, student organizing, and differing movement factions are part of the story, too.

Interviews preserve testimony from participants, including people who have since died. For a King-focused introduction, it is less narrowly biographical than the other selections; for historical breadth, that is its strength.

Streaming catalogs change and differ by country. Platform references published in January 2025 are not reliable confirmation of availability in October 2026, so check the service catalogs in your region before choosing a film. For a physical copy of Selma, “Selma DVD” is a useful library-catalog search phrase; a catalog listing does not establish current retail inventory or price.
