Kevin Owens’ rivalry with Sami Zayn is the clearest choice for the best of his career: their real-life friendship gives the story emotional weight, and WWE carried its betrayal-and-revenge arc from NXT into the main roster. Roman Reigns is another standout, with championship stakes that later grew into a personal fight against The Bloodline.
The “worst” list is less definitive. WWE has not published an official ranking, and the available criticism speaks most clearly to one major match payoff: Owens versus Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 33. The selections below are editorial judgments about story, stakes, match quality and payoff—not an established consensus ranking.
How these rivalries are ranked
The best rivalries combine a clear story with personal history, memorable matches, meaningful stakes and a payoff that fits the build. For the weaker end, “worst” means comparatively less satisfying by those measures—not that every match was poor or that a feud had no value.
WWE’s career profile names several of Owens’ prominent rivals, but it does not grade the programs. That makes the strongest positive cases easier to establish than a definitive bottom five. The rankings below reflect the available story record and, where noted, contemporary commentary.

5 best Kevin Owens rivalries
1. Sami Zayn: friendship, betrayal and a rivalry that followed them
Owens and Zayn met in 2002 and were friends and partners before their WWE rivalry took shape, according to WWE’s history of their relationship. That background made their NXT conflict feel like a rupture between people who knew each other, not simply two wrestlers competing for a title.
At TakeOver: R Evolution in December 2014, Zayn won the NXT Championship; Owens debuted on the same show and attacked him. WWE’s account says their subsequent attacks and title matches left Zayn battered, contributing to a shoulder injury that sidelined him for much of 2015. Owens later defeated Zayn for the championship at TakeOver: Rival. WWE’s account of Owens’ NXT arrival documents the attack and title change.
The story did not end with their call-ups. WWE’s Payback preview recaps Zayn disrupting Owens’ Intercontinental Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 32 and Owens returning the favor by stopping Zayn from pursuing a world-title opportunity the following night. WWE’s Battleground preview presents their feud as a recurring obstacle to each man’s championship ambitions. The long continuity, personal history and ability to re-enter the story at different stages make this Owens’ strongest rivalry.
2. Roman Reigns: a title chase that became personal
Owens and Reigns’ rivalry had more than one phase. USA Network’s timeline traces an Intercontinental Championship match in 2015, then their 2017 Universal Championship program, when Reigns repeatedly challenged Owens for the title.

The conflict returned in 2020–21 with a more personal edge. Reigns had The Bloodline’s help, and Owens faced him in a Last Man Standing match at the 2021 Royal Rumble. The repeated interference heightened the obstacle Owens had to overcome; it should not be mistaken for evidence that every match in the program was acclaimed.

The rivalry also connected to a larger WWE story. WWE’s Owens profile links his ongoing conflict with The Bloodline to his WrestleMania 39 tag-team title win with Zayn against The Usos. Reigns ranks near the top for escalation, championship stakes and the way the conflict drew Owens into that wider narrative.
3. John Cena: an immediate main-roster statement
Owens’ first main-roster match was against Cena, and Owens won. WWE’s career profile highlights that result, while USA Network’s interview with Owens frames Cena as the major follow-up to Owens’ conflict with Zayn. The win gave Owens an unusually consequential introduction to WWE’s main roster.
The available material establishes the program’s significance more clearly than it establishes a full critical verdict on every match or its ending. Its place here rests on career impact and the clarity of the initial stakes.
4. Shane McMahon: a personal conflict with authority
WWE lists Shane McMahon among Owens’ notable rivals in its career profile. The pairing broadened Owens’ conflicts beyond championship competition and placed him opposite an authority figure. That makes the program a notable part of his career, though the available sources do not offer a detailed comparative assessment of its match quality or payoff.
5. Cody Rhodes: a prominent 2024 program
Owens’ 2024 rivalry with Rhodes received year-end notice: WrestleZone included Cody Rhodes versus Kevin Owens as an honorable mention among its best WWE feuds of the year in a December 30, 2024 feature. That is one writer’s evaluation, not a broad consensus, but it provides a specific positive assessment of the program’s place in that year’s WWE storytelling.

5 most disappointing rivalries or payoffs
There is no reliable, sourced consensus list of Owens’ five worst rivalries. The entries below are therefore best read as the least convincing cases against the stronger programs above. In particular, the available criticism supports a judgment about Jericho’s WrestleMania match payoff, not a blanket claim that their entire feud failed.
1. Chris Jericho: a strong story with a disappointing WrestleMania payoff
The Owens–Jericho story began 2017 with momentum, but its WrestleMania 33 match did not meet expectations. Bleacher Report’s 2017 retrospective described the feud as starting Owens’ year well while calling the WrestleMania match disappointing. It also noted Vince McMahon’s frustration as shown in the WWE 365: Kevin Owens documentary.

That distinction matters: a weak final match can leave a sour impression without making the full story one of Owens’ worst. Jericho is the clearest “disappointing payoff” entry, but the evidence does not support reducing the whole rivalry to that one result.
2. AJ Styles: a notable rival, but not a proven bottom-five feud
WWE names Styles among Owens’ notable rivals in its career profile. The available coverage establishes that they had a prominent program, but does not supply a specific critical case for ranking it among Owens’ worst. Its presence here is a cautious, lower-confidence selection rather than a claim of documented failure.
3. Seth Rollins: prominent, with limited evidence for a negative verdict
Rollins also appears among the rivals listed on WWE’s profile. The source material does not provide a comparable negative review of the feud’s matches, development or ending. It belongs on a tentative short list only because the assignment calls for five weaker programs; the evidence does not establish it as a definite low point.
Rank #4
- The WWE Universe can collect WWE Elite action figures of favorite WWE Superstars and Legends!
- Each WWE figure features highly detailed TrueFX technology for life-like authenticity.
- Recreate signature poses and finishing moves with 25 points of articulation for extreme posability!
- Includes interchangeable hands and iconic accessories!
- Gift a favorite WWE action figure or make your collection elite!
4. Steve Austin: a high-profile pairing, not a substantiated worst
WWE’s profile lists Austin among Owens’ career rivals, but the available sources do not offer enough detail to judge the program against the criteria used here. There is no basis in this source set for calling it a failure; any placement among the “worst” should be understood as low-confidence, not a sourced critical consensus.
5. The Bloodline: a long-running conflict whose full quality is not established here
Owens’ conflict with The Bloodline became a major part of WWE’s wider story and is connected in WWE’s profile to the WrestleMania 39 tag-team title win with Zayn. That is meaningful narrative impact, not evidence that the entire rivalry deserves a negative ranking. The available coverage does not provide a sustained critical assessment of the full program, so this is the least secure entry on the list.
What the rankings can—and cannot—say
The strongest evidence points to Zayn and Reigns as top-tier rivalries for different reasons: Zayn brings the deepest personal history and continuity, while Reigns brings escalating title stakes and a connection to The Bloodline. Cena’s program stands out for the impact of Owens’ main-roster debut, and the 2024 Rhodes feud received a positive year-end mention.
At the weaker end, Jericho’s WrestleMania 33 payoff has a specific contemporary negative assessment. The other proposed entries are less firmly supported: WWE’s profile confirms they were rivals, but naming a rivalry is not the same as judging its quality. No match-count statistic or objective ranking is established by these sources.
