The Game Awards 2024 opened with The Witcher IV and went on to reveal or spotlight major projects including Borderlands 4, Elden Ring: Nightreign and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The five picks below are an editorial selection—not an official event ranking—based on franchise significance, novelty and the impact of each reveal.
1. The Witcher IV puts Ciri at the center of a new saga
CD PROJEKT RED opened The Game Awards 2024 with the first look at The Witcher IV, which the studio describes as the first game in a new Witcher saga. Ciri is its protagonist, and the game is planned as a single-player, open-world RPG. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba said, “We’re kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story!” (CD PROJEKT RED announcement.)
The nearly six-minute reveal follows Ciri as she takes a witcher contract in a remote village where a monster has demanded ritual sacrifice for generations. It is a cinematic, pre-rendered trailer—not a demonstration of gameplay. CD PROJEKT RED says it was made in a custom Unreal Engine 5 build on an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU. The studio’s description of the game as its most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game yet is an aspiration, not a measured assessment. (Trailer details from The Witcher.)
2. Borderlands 4 gets its first gameplay trailer
Borderlands 4 stood out for showing gameplay rather than relying only on a cinematic tease. GameSpot’s account of the show says Gearbox head Randy Pitchford presented the game’s first gameplay trailer. It also describes story glimpses of a large war involving familiar bandits and an invading force. That offers a sense of the conflict, but the trailer account does not establish a full plot or final feature list. (GameSpot’s The Game Awards 2024 announcements roundup.)

3. Elden Ring: Nightreign takes the series in a co-op direction
Elden Ring: Nightreign was presented as a standalone spin-off centered on co-op action, giving the Elden Ring universe a different structure from the main game. That description reflects contemporary coverage of the reveal; it should not be treated as a complete or current feature list. (PC Gamer’s announcement roundup; Engadget’s event recap.)
Bandai Namco’s official site also lists a Collector’s Edition with the base game, The Forsaken Hollows DLC, a Wylder statue, steelbook, Nightfarer cards, hardcover artbook, digital soundtrack and collector’s box. 4. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet introduces a new Naughty Dog universe
Naughty Dog revealed Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet among the event’s closing announcements. Engadget identifies its protagonist as Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter, and describes the reveal as a cinematic trailer. As a new property rather than another entry in one of Naughty Dog’s established series, it offered one of the show’s clearest glimpses of an unfamiliar world. (Engadget’s recap.)
There is a title wording discrepancy in the event’s own retrospective: The Game Awards recap calls the reveal “The Heretic Prophecy,” while Engadget uses Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The game is referred to here by the latter title. (The Game Awards’ 2024 recap.)

5. Onimusha: Way of the Sword revives a long-dormant series
Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword earns the fifth place for its significance to a returning franchise: Engadget described it as the first new Onimusha game since the original released on PlayStation 2 in 2001. That long gap made the announcement notable even though the available reveal coverage here provides less detail about the game itself than the trailers for The Witcher IV or Borderlands 4. The picks span a new chapter for a major RPG series, a gameplay-first look at a popular shooter, a co-op spin-off, a new Naughty Dog property and the return of a dormant franchise. Their reveal formats and the amount of information shown were not equal: CD PROJEKT RED supplied substantial context for The Witcher IV, while the other announcements had different degrees of detail in the cited event coverage. The Game Awards’ own 2024 recap highlights announcements but does not publish an official top-five ranking.
