Use 16:9 for most conventional horizontal videos framed for widescreen viewing. Keep footage in 4:3 when that is its original shape or the composition was deliberately made for it. YouTube’s player adapts to different video shapes, so you do not need to stretch, crop, or add black bars to make 4:3 footage fit.
Which aspect ratio should you use for YouTube?
Choose based on the footage and intended composition, not on a belief that every YouTube video must fill a widescreen frame. YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio on computers, making it the usual choice for newly framed horizontal video. But its player adapts to the video, so preserving a 4:3 source is a valid choice.
- Choose 16:9 for material shot or composed in widescreen and intended for a conventional horizontal presentation.
- Choose 4:3 for archival footage that is natively 4:3, or for a composition intentionally designed in that shape.
There is no cited evidence establishing that either ratio improves views, reach, click-through rate, or audience retention. Treat this as a framing and presentation decision.
How YouTube displays 4:3 and 16:9 video
YouTube Help calls 16:9 the standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer, while also explaining that the player adapts to different video shapes. A 4:3 video therefore does not have to be stretched or cropped just because it appears within a widescreen viewing context.

Presentation also depends on the device. The YouTube Android app adapts its player shape for vertical, square, and horizontal videos; desktop playback has a 16:9 standard. The player’s adaptation is a reason to upload the intended image cleanly rather than forcing every source into a 16:9 canvas.
Should you convert 4:3 footage to 16:9?
Usually, no—not if conversion would distort, crop, or needlessly alter the original. For documentary material, preserving the source’s original framing can matter to the image and its context. Export the image in its intended aspect ratio and let YouTube’s player adapt.

YouTube advises creators to avoid adding padding or black bars directly to a video because padding interferes with the player’s ability to adapt dynamically. Do not bake bars into a 4:3 picture just to simulate a 16:9 presentation, or add bars to a widescreen picture to force a different canvas. This advice concerns bars added during export; it does not mean you should crop or alter footage whose original composition already includes a border or other visual element.

Use a resolution that suits the source and your export. The 16:9 size examples above do not mean that a 4:3 video must be resized to widescreen dimensions.

Keep the thumbnail decision separate
YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for regular video thumbnails. That recommendation applies to the thumbnail, not the video frame: a 16:9 thumbnail does not require the video itself to be 16:9. Shorts have separate thumbnail guidance.
A practical upload checklist
- Confirm the aspect ratio of the original footage or the composition you intend to deliver.
- Use 16:9 for newly framed horizontal material intended for a conventional widescreen presentation; preserve 4:3 when the source or deliberate composition calls for it.
- Do not stretch or crop a 4:3 image solely to fill a widescreen canvas.
- Do not add black bars or padding during export just to force a different player shape.
- Choose a thumbnail ratio independently; YouTube recommends 16:9 for regular video thumbnails.
