You can still try free movie services on an older Windows PC, but the dependable choice is usually a browser—not a legacy Microsoft Store app. Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, and Kanopy offer legal streaming options, with different trade-offs: most are ad-supported, while Kanopy requires access through a participating library or institution. Whether playback works on Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 depends on the browser and the service’s current requirements.
Availability and catalogues vary by country. The services below are not a promise that every title or feature is available in your region.

“Free” here does not mean an unlimited collection of new theatrical releases. Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex’s free streaming catalogue use ads. Kanopy may cost eligible patrons nothing at the point of use, but a library or school must participate, and limits may apply.

1. Tubi: on-demand viewing with ads
Tubi is a straightforward place to begin if you want to choose a film from an on-demand catalogue rather than tune into a scheduled channel. Its free viewing is generally supported by advertising. The catalogue changes, and availability differs by territory, so a title listed in one country may not be playable in another.

Open the official Tubi website in your browser and search there. Avoid third-party installers claiming to provide a Windows version. A browser session is the safer compatibility route for older Windows machines, but an obsolete browser may still fail to play video.
Main trade-off: Expect ad breaks, and do not assume the catalogue will include a particular recent film.
2. Pluto TV: live-style channels and on-demand films
Pluto TV combines scheduled, channel-like programming with an on-demand section. It is ad-supported and can suit casual viewing when you are happy to browse what is playing, as well as search for a specific title. Its channel lineup and catalogue can change, and regional restrictions apply.

Main trade-off: Scheduled channels offer less control than a purely on-demand catalogue, and ads interrupt playback.
3. Plex: a free streaming catalogue, distinct from your own media
Plex’s free streaming catalogue includes ad-supported movies and television. Plex also has personal-media features, but those are a separate part of the service: its free streaming catalogue is not a way to obtain copyrighted films or a substitute for rights to media you do not own.
Start at Plex’s official site and check what is available in your region. An account may be useful for watchlists or personalization. Some Plex features and content are paid, so “free Plex” should not be read as meaning that every feature is free. On an older PC, use the website unless you have verified that a current official app supports your version of Windows.

4. Kanopy: a library or university may provide access
Kanopy is worth checking if you are interested in independent films, documentaries, classics, or educational titles. It is not universally free to every viewer: your public library, university, or other institution must participate. A library card alone is not enough if that library does not offer Kanopy. Your institution may set viewing limits and determine which films are available.
Visit Kanopy’s official site and follow its library or institution sign-in process. Use the credentials or access route provided by your institution; do not enter them on an unrelated streaming site.
Main trade-off: Access, titles, and play limits depend on the participating institution.
What “Windows app” means on an older PC
A service that works in a browser is not necessarily a native Windows application. An app could mean a Microsoft Store program, an older Windows 8/8.1 app, a Windows 10 app, or simply a browser shortcut. Unless a current official Store or vendor listing confirms compatibility, treat these recommendations as websites to try—not as guaranteed Windows apps.

That distinction matters because Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. Microsoft says existing Store apps may continue to work, but new app and in-app purchases were disabled; publisher updates were generally available only through June 30, 2023, unless a developer independently continued support. Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 end-of-support details also note that Edge 109 was the last supported Edge version for Windows 8.1. A modern streaming site may outgrow an old browser even if the site itself remains online.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can still run, but Microsoft no longer provides ordinary technical support, feature updates, or security updates for it. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice. Windows 11 is the supported fallback if the computer is eligible. Older hardware may not meet its requirements.

How to try a service safely
- Check your Windows version. Open Settings → System → About, or press Windows+R, enter
winver, and press Enter. - Update your browser as far as the operating system allows. On older Windows, the newest available browser may still be too old for current streaming standards.
- Go to the official service domain. Search and start playback there; do not install a movie app from a download site, pop-up, or unfamiliar advertisement.
- Test the basics. Check playback, full-screen mode, captions, volume, and keyboard or mouse controls before settling in.
- Use an install prompt cautiously. If your browser offers to install the site as an app, make sure the prompt comes from the browser. Do not treat a third-party installer as an official app.
Microsoft recommends getting apps from the Microsoft Store where possible and provides controls for app recommendations and installation sources in Windows app settings. On an unsupported Windows version, however, Store availability does not guarantee a current or maintained streaming app.

- Refresh the page, then restart the browser.
- Disable unnecessary browser extensions or try a private window.
- Check that JavaScript and cookies are not blocked.
- Try another browser that is supported on your Windows version.
- Lower playback quality if the service offers a quality setting; an old processor or graphics chip may struggle with high-resolution video.
- Restart the PC and router. A wired Ethernet connection can be more reliable than weak Wi-Fi.
- Check the service’s official help pages for browser and operating-system requirements.
Modern playback can depend on browser standards, digital-rights management (DRM), and hardware video decoding. On Windows 8.1 in particular, a failure may reflect the obsolete operating system or browser rather than a problem you can fix by installing another player. Do not install random codec packs, cracked apps, unknown extensions, or executables advertised as free movie software.
What to avoid—and what to expect
- Unofficial movie sites and apps: Sites offering recent cinema releases for free without a clear legitimate source may expose you to scams, intrusive advertising, malware, or copyright problems.
- Fake codecs and downloaders: You do not need an unknown codec pack or third-party movie downloader to try the browser services above. The recommendations are for streaming, not offline downloads.
- Free-trial confusion: A trial that later charges is not the same as an ad-supported or library-funded free service.
- New-release expectations: Free catalogues often focus on older catalogue titles, independent films, rotating selections, or scheduled programming. A search result does not guarantee that a title can be played in your country or account type.
- Microsoft Movies & TV: Microsoft’s service is no longer a place to buy new movie or TV content. Previously purchased content remains accessible through the Movies & TV app on supported Windows and Xbox devices. See Microsoft’s Movies & TV guidance.
If you are still using Windows 8.1 or 10, consider moving to a supported operating system for safer browsing and more reliable compatibility. Windows 11 is not a practical upgrade for every old computer, and you should check eligibility before making plans. Do not leave Windows 10 S mode simply to install an unverified movie app: leaving S mode is a one-way change, and Microsoft describes the process here.
