The complete month-by-month list of 36 films highlighted for summer 2025, from Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible to Pavements, Weapons, and The Roses.

Summer 2025 offered one of the broadest movie lineups in years: superhero reboots, franchise sequels, live-action remakes, original auteur films, horror, animation, romantic drama, literary adaptations, and streaming releases all appeared in the same 14-week window. The list below preserves the 36 films highlighted in the original May 10, 2025 feature, in its original release-date order.

This is now a historical guide, not a list of movies still awaiting release. As of August 12, 2026, the summer 2025 release cycle has concluded. The dates are the original U.S.-oriented dates presented at the time, and some schedules were subject to change. International release dates and later home-viewing windows varied.

The original selection was not a ranking of the 36 best films. It represented the titles generating attention before and during the summer season, at a moment when theatrical scheduling was regaining variety after the disruptions caused by industry strikes. “New” also includes sequels, remakes, reboots, adaptations, and franchise continuations—not only original stories.

What this summer movie list represents

The lineup moved between enormous studio spectacles and deliberately smaller films. A viewer looking for action could choose between Mission: Impossible, Ballerina, F1, Superman, and Jurassic World Rebirth. Horror audiences had Bring Her Back, 28 Years Later, M3GAN 2.0, Weapons, and Together. Meanwhile, Pavements, Sorry, Baby, The Life of Chuck, Materialists, and The Roses represented more character-driven or independent-minded programming.

For DocumentaryTube readers, Pavements is the clearest nonfiction-adjacent title: it is a hybrid music film that combines documentary portraiture, reenactment, biographical material, and a musical-theater sensibility. The rest of the list is primarily narrative cinema, but it shows how much the 2025 summer calendar extended beyond conventional blockbuster formulas.

Availability note: This article does not assign current streaming, digital-rental, Blu-ray, or DVD locations to the films. Those windows vary by title, country, distributor, and date, so check an official distributor or retailer immediately before watching.

May 2025

1. Hurry Up Tomorrow — May 16, 2025

Trey Edward Shults directed this surreal psychological horror film, which was co-written by and stars Abel Tesfaye, better known professionally as the Weeknd. Tesfaye plays a fictionalized version of himself alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.

The story follows a performer confronting fame, identity, and self-discovery after encountering a mysterious young woman. Its appeal came partly from the unusual combination of music-star persona, psychological horror, and an auteur director known for intensely subjective storytelling.

2. Lilo & Stitch — May 23, 2025

Disney’s live-action reimagining of the 2002 animated film returns to the relationship between Lilo, a young Hawaiian girl, and Stitch, a blue extraterrestrial experiment who lands on Earth. The central emotional idea remains family, including the Hawaiian concept of ohana.

The film was positioned as one of the season’s major family releases. Its interest depended less on a new premise than on how a live-action production would translate the original’s comedy, alien chaos, Hawaiian setting, and emphasis on family responsibility.

3. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning — May 23, 2025

Tom Cruise returned as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the second half of the story begun by Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. Ethan and his team faced a sentient artificial-intelligence threat, giving the long-running spy series a technology-driven antagonist with potentially global consequences.

The film’s main theatrical draw was its scale: large practical set pieces, international espionage, and Cruise’s reputation for performing dangerous stunts. Viewers unfamiliar with the preceding chapter would have the most context by treating this as a continuation rather than a standalone starting point.

4. Bring Her Back — May 30, 2025

Danny and Michael Philippou followed Talk to Me with this horror story about a visually impaired young woman and her teenage brother. After a family tragedy, the siblings enter a foster home overseen by a seemingly welcoming guardian played by Sally Hawkins.

The film’s central tension comes from the gap between the home’s appearance and its guardian’s increasingly disturbing motives. It is a family-trauma horror film built around vulnerability, dependence, and the danger hidden behind apparent care.

5. Karate Kid: Legends — May 30, 2025

Rather than treating the Karate Kid property as a single isolated continuity, this film brings together elements associated with both the original franchise and the 2010 remake. Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan appear together, while Ben Wang plays a new student at the center of the story.

The film was marketed as a bridge between generations of the property. Its core audience therefore included viewers attached to Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han as well as younger audiences meeting the franchise through a new protagonist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. The Phoenician Scheme — May 30, 2025

Wes Anderson’s ensemble comedy-drama stars Benicio del Toro as businessman Anatole Korda and Mia Threapleton as his daughter, Liesl. Their relationship unfolds amid a globe-spanning business scheme and an unusually large cast that includes Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Cera, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Riz Ahmed.

This was the season’s most recognizable auteur-driven studio release: a family and business story filtered through Anderson’s highly composed visual style, deadpan humor, eccentric characters, and elaborate ensemble construction.

June 2025

7. Ballerina — June 6, 2025

Ana de Armas plays Eve, a dancer trained as an assassin who pursues revenge after her family is murdered. The film expands the world of the John Wick series, with Keanu Reeves and other franchise regulars connecting it to the established timeline.

The premise combines ballet’s precision and physical discipline with the franchise’s gunplay, hand-to-hand combat, and criminal underworld. It was designed as a character-centered spinoff rather than a simple continuation of John Wick’s own story.

8. Echo Valley — June 6, 2025

Julianne Moore plays a Pennsylvania horse farmer whose daughter, portrayed by Sydney Sweeney, comes home covered in another person’s blood. The mother’s instinct to protect her daughter places her between law enforcement and criminal danger.

Released through Apple TV+, the thriller is driven by a contained moral dilemma: how far can a parent go to shield a child when the evidence surrounding that child appears catastrophic?

9. The Life of Chuck — June 6, 2025

Mike Flanagan adapted Stephen King’s novella into a drama starring Tom Hiddleston as an apparently ordinary accountant whose life becomes connected to the end of the world. Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Jacob Tremblay are among the supporting cast.

The premise suggests a film less interested in a conventional apocalypse spectacle than in the relationship between one person’s life and the collapse of a larger world. It was one of the summer’s clearest literary-adaptation and prestige-drama offerings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read before or after: The film comes from Stephen King’s novella, so an edition containing Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck offers useful source material for readers who want to compare the film with the original story. Check the edition details before purchasing, since the novella appears in collected editions.

10. Pavements — June 6, 2025

Alex Ross Perry’s film about the indie-rock band Pavement is not a conventional music documentary. It mixes documentary portraiture with reenactment, biographical elements, and a musical-theater sensibility, creating a hybrid form that reflects the band’s history without treating it as a straightforward chronology.

The film had already opened in select markets before its wider summer rollout. Its unusual structure made it a particularly relevant title for viewers interested in how nonfiction cinema can use performance and reconstruction without becoming a standard concert film or talking-head biography.

11. How to Train Your Dragon — June 13, 2025

DreamWorks brought its animated franchise into live action with the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who befriends and trains the dragon Toothless. Mason Thames and Nico Parker lead the new cast, while Gerard Butler returns as Stoick in a different medium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The central question for audiences was how the live-action version would translate the friendship, flight, village culture, and emotional warmth that made the animated films family favorites. Butler’s return as Stoick provided a direct link between the two versions.

12. Materialists — June 13, 2025

Celine Song followed Past Lives with this romantic drama about a professional matchmaker who becomes trapped in her own romantic dilemma. Dakota Johnson plays the matchmaker, with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans representing the two men involved in the central conflict.

The setup gives the film a built-in contrast between professional expertise and personal uncertainty. Instead of treating romance only as spontaneous chemistry, it examines how people evaluate compatibility, security, desire, and long-term partnership.

13. Elio — June 20, 2025

Pixar’s animated science-fiction adventure centers on Elio, an 11-year-old boy who believes in extraterrestrial life. After a misunderstanding, aliens identify him as Earth’s leader, turning his private fascination with space into an interstellar diplomatic problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The film combined Pixar’s family-oriented storytelling with a large-scale space premise. Its emotional engine is a child who feels out of place on Earth and suddenly finds himself expected to represent the entire planet.

14. 28 Years Later — June 20, 2025

Danny Boyle returned to the infected, post-apocalyptic world associated with 28 Days Later. The story follows a father and son living amid continuing danger from rage-infected humans, with Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among the principal cast.

The film’s title signals a substantial time jump, but the danger remains rooted in the series’ original idea: infection transforms human beings into violent, rapidly moving threats. Boyle’s return also made the film a major event for fans of the earlier films’ raw, socially anxious approach to horror.

15. F1 — June 27, 2025

Brad Pitt plays a former Formula One driver who returns to the sport to coach a younger racing prodigy, played by Damson Idris. Joseph Kosinski directed the film, which was distributed by Warner Bros. and designed as a large-format racing spectacle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The story uses the mentor-and-rookie relationship to give the racing action a personal structure. Its appeal was tied to the speed, danger, engineering, and visual scale of Formula One rather than to an existing fictional franchise.

16. M3GAN 2.0 — June 27, 2025

The sequel returns to the killer artificial-intelligence doll introduced in 2022’s M3GAN. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprise their roles, while the follow-up expands the threat and retains the series’ combination of horror, technology anxiety, and dark comedy.

As with the first film, the concept places an apparently helpful piece of technology inside a family relationship and then asks what happens when its interpretation of protection becomes dangerous. The sequel’s challenge was to broaden that premise without losing the deliberately strange tone of the original.

17. Sorry, Baby — June 27, 2025

Eva Victor wrote, directed, and stars in this debut feature about a graduate student and professor processing the aftermath of sexual assault. The film emerged from Sundance with early attention for combining painful subject matter, humor, and an unconventional narrative structure.

Its focus is not the assault as a sensational plot device, but the uneven, nonlinear process of living afterward. That approach made it one of the summer’s most distinctive smaller-scale dramatic releases.

July 2025

18. Jurassic World Rebirth — July 2, 2025

Scarlett Johansson leads an expedition searching for surviving dinosaurs and genetic material after the events of the previous Jurassic World films. Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey co-star, and Gareth Edwards directs.

The film was presented as both a new entry point and a return to the survival-adventure spirit associated with the original Jurassic Park. Its setup moves the focus back toward an expedition, dangerous environments, scientific objectives, and human beings attempting to control forces larger than themselves.

19. The Old Guard 2 — July 2, 2025

Charlize Theron returned as Andy, the leader of an immortal group of mercenaries adapted from Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s graphic novel. Victoria Mahoney directed the sequel, which brought back several cast members from the first film and added Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The continuation expands a superhero-adjacent action concept built around immortality, accumulated trauma, and the ethics of using extraordinary longevity for covert violence. It was aimed at viewers who wanted the first film’s mythology and team dynamic carried forward.

20. 40 Acres — July 4, 2025

Danielle Deadwyler stars in this post-apocalyptic thriller about survivors defending an agricultural sanctuary from an outside threat. Rather than relying on a preexisting franchise, the film uses land, food production, community defense, and resource scarcity as the foundations of its survival story.

That premise gives the action a material stake: the characters are not merely protecting a bunker or escaping monsters, but defending the means of keeping a community alive.

21. Superman — July 11, 2025

James Gunn’s film introduces David Corenswet as Superman and Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It was presented as the first major theatrical feature in the new DC Studios continuity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The film’s defining tonal promise was a brighter and more hopeful interpretation of Superman, with Krypto and other DC figures also appearing. Its importance extended beyond the individual character: it established the cinematic direction of a new DC continuity while returning Superman to the center of a summer release calendar.

22. I Know What You Did Last Summer — July 18, 2025

This legacy sequel, or requel, reconnects with the 1997 slasher by bringing back Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. alongside a younger cast that includes Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, and Jonah Hauer-King.

The basic threat remains recognizable: a hook-wielding killer pursues young people connected to a past death. The film therefore serves two audiences at once—viewers invested in the earlier characters and newcomers encountering the premise for the first time.

23. Eddington — July 18, 2025

Ari Aster’s dark contemporary satire is set in New Mexico in 2020. Joaquin Phoenix plays a sheriff in conflict with a mayor portrayed by Pedro Pascal, with Emma Stone and Austin Butler among the ensemble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting places the story in a period marked by political polarization, public-health anxiety, and escalating social distrust. Rather than presenting a conventional western or political thriller, the film uses a local conflict to examine a much broader atmosphere of suspicion and absurdity.

24. The Fantastic Four: First Steps — July 25, 2025

Marvel Studios introduced a new version of the Fantastic Four with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.

A retro-futurist 1960s setting distinguished the film from a contemporary superhero origin story. Its integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was another major anticipation point, but the period design and the family-like dynamic of the team were equally central to its identity.

25. Happy Gilmore 2 — July 25, 2025

Adam Sandler reprised his role as the volatile golfer from the 1996 comedy, with Christopher McDonald returning as Shooter McGavin. The Netflix sequel was promoted around Sandler’s return to a familiar comedy character and attracted attention for appearances involving figures including Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce.

The film’s appeal was fundamentally nostalgic: it revisited an established character and comic world nearly three decades after the original. Viewers looking for a completely new Sandler premise would be approaching a different kind of project from the one this sequel represents.

26. Oh, Hi — July 25, 2025

Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman star in this relationship comedy about a couple whose romantic weekend goes badly wrong. Geraldine Viswanathan, John Reynolds, and David Cross also appear.

The film’s Sundance exposure gave it independent-film momentum before its summer release. Its hook is the collision between an intimate couple’s expectations and an increasingly uncomfortable situation, with the comedy arising from the breakdown of a supposedly ideal romantic escape.

27. Together — July 30, 2025

Dave Franco and Alison Brie play a couple who move to the country and encounter supernatural circumstances that make their physical connection literal and grotesque.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is an unusual body-horror examination of intimacy and commitment. The film turns the language of being emotionally or physically joined to another person into a concrete, unsettling premise about the limits of individuality inside a relationship.

August 2025

28. The Naked Gun — August 1, 2025

Liam Neeson takes over the central role in a revival of the absurdist police-comedy franchise, with Akiva Schaffer directing. The film’s main casting joke is the contrast between Neeson’s established dramatic-action persona and the comic legacy of Leslie Nielsen.

The challenge for the revival was to preserve the franchise’s deadpan delivery, visual gags, and intentionally ridiculous police-procedural logic while introducing the premise to audiences who may not have grown up with the earlier films.

29. Freakier Friday — August 8, 2025

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunited for a sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy. That film was itself a remake of Disney’s 1970s movie, giving the new sequel a layered legacy stretching across multiple generations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The principal anticipation hook was the return of the original remake’s mother-and-daughter leads. The body-swap premise also remains an efficient comedy device because it turns a family disagreement into a literal exchange of perspective.

30. Weapons — August 8, 2025

Zach Cregger followed Barbarian with a horror mystery centered on the disappearance of elementary-school children. Julia Garner and Josh Brolin lead the cast.

The film’s deliberately limited early plot information was part of its anticipation strategy. Its premise begins with an absence—children who vanish—and builds tension around the question of what connects the disappearances and who understands more than they are saying.

31. Nobody 2 — August 15, 2025

Bob Odenkirk returned as Hutch Mansell, an apparently ordinary suburban father with a government-trained killer’s past. The sequel expanded the supporting cast with Sharon Stone and Colin Hanks while retaining franchise figures including Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd.

Cinemark Theatres Physical Gift Card

The character’s appeal comes from the contradiction between domestic normality and buried professional violence. A second chapter allows the film to explore the consequences of Hutch’s double life while continuing the series’ action-comedy balance.

32. Highest 2 Lowest — August 22, 2025

Spike Lee adapted Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, itself based on Ed McBain, by moving the moral and kidnapping drama into the contemporary music industry. Denzel Washington plays a music mogul whose driver’s son is abducted, with Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky also appearing.

The change of setting updates the original class and power conflict for an industry built around celebrity, wealth, image, and access. It is one of the summer’s clearest examples of a major filmmaker reworking an established story rather than simply reproducing its original setting.

33. Honey Don’t! — August 22, 2025

Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s second proposed lesbian B-movie stars Margaret Qualley as private investigator Honey O’Donoghue. Chris Evans and Aubrey Plaza co-star in a mystery involving a burned corpse, a preacher, and a potentially dangerous police officer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The film follows the deliberately pulpy direction established by the filmmakers’ collaboration while combining crime-movie ingredients with an offbeat comic tone. Its appeal rested on the pairing of Qualley’s investigator with a cast and premise designed for eccentricity rather than procedural realism.

34. Lurker — August 22, 2025

Alex Russell’s debut feature examines the power imbalance between a rising British pop singer and a man who forces his way into the singer’s inner circle. The film was recognized as a Sundance discovery with a cringe-comedic perspective on fame, access, and social-media-era proximity.

Its central anxiety is familiar to the internet age: the difference between being a genuine friend, a fan, an employee, and someone exploiting access to a public figure. The film turns that blurred boundary into a study of manipulation and status.

35. Caught Stealing — August 29, 2025

Darren Aronofsky directed this 1990s New York crime thriller, based on Charlie Huston’s books. Austin Butler plays a former baseball player pulled into a criminal conflict involving his neighbor, missing money, and mistaken identity.

Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Matt Smith, and Bad Bunny also star. The setup places an ordinary-seeming protagonist inside a dangerous chain of misunderstandings, giving the film a crime-noir structure shaped by New York neighborhoods, buried money, and people who assume the wrong person knows the right thing.

Read the source: Viewers drawn to the film’s literary crime setup can look for Charlie Huston’s Caught Stealing, the source novel associated with Butler’s character. Compare the edition and format before purchasing, since the film is also connected to Huston’s broader series of books.

36. The Roses — August 29, 2025

Jay Roach’s contemporary reimagining of The War of the Roses stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a married couple whose relationship deteriorates into a bitter divorce battle. Tony McNamara co-wrote the screenplay.

The project was positioned as an attempt to revive the adult dark-comedy crowd-pleaser. Its subject is familiar but durable: marital resentment escalates until the legal and emotional process of separation becomes a competitive campaign rather than a clean division of two lives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the lineage: For readers interested in the story’s earlier form, Warren Adler’s The War of the Roses is a relevant source-text companion. It is not required reading, but it provides a way to compare the 2025 reimagining with the underlying literary and cinematic tradition.

How to use this list now

Because the original summer window is over, treat the dates as an archive of 2025 theatrical scheduling rather than as current showtime information. If you are trying to watch one of the films now, verify the individual title through the distributor, a legitimate digital storefront, or a current physical-media retailer. Do not assume that a film’s original theatrical distributor still controls every later viewing window, and do not assume that a release on one subscription service applies to the rest of the list.

There are also several natural source-material and fan-resource paths. The Life of Chuck, Caught Stealing, and The Roses have direct or clearly relevant literary companions. Fans of Lilo & Stitch, Karate Kid: Legends, Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and How to Train Your Dragon may also find licensed merchandise or collectibles, but exact products and licensing should be checked at the time of purchase.

Disclosure: Source-material recommendations may contain affiliate links after retailer availability and program details are verified. The books are included because they have a direct editorial relationship to the films, not because every title on the list requires a shopping recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was this list ranked from 1 to 36?

No. The numbering preserves the original article’s order, which followed the expected U.S. release calendar. It was a selection of 36 films generating attention, not a ranking of quality, box-office prospects, or critical merit.

Are these movies still upcoming?

No. The original dates belong to the 2025 summer release cycle, which had concluded by the August 12, 2026 research date. Current theatrical, streaming, rental, and physical-media availability must be checked title by title.

What does the list mean by new movies?

It includes original films as well as sequels, remakes, reboots, adaptations, legacy sequels, and franchise spinoffs. Examples include Freakier Friday, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Ballerina, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Which films on the list are based on books?

The Life of Chuck is adapted from Stephen King’s novella. Caught Stealing is based on Charlie Huston’s crime books, and The Roses reworks the lineage of Warren Adler’s The War of the Roses and its earlier film adaptation. Highest 2 Lowest also adapts the story lineage of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, which was based on Ed McBain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which title is most directly connected to documentary filmmaking?

Pavements is the clearest documentary-related entry. It is a hybrid film about the band Pavement that combines documentary portraiture, reenactment, biographical material, and musical-theater elements rather than following the format of a conventional music documentary.

The Bottom Line

The 36-film summer 2025 lineup mattered because it demonstrated how many different kinds of moviegoing could coexist in one season: major franchise continuations, family entertainment, horror experiments, literary adaptations, auteur projects, and hybrid nonfiction. Today, the list works best as a record of what audiences were anticipating in 2025—and as a map for choosing individual films to research, revisit, or pair with their source material.
