You can do much more in the YouTube app for iPhone and iPad than press play: jump through a lecture, find a specific explanation, keep your recommendations on track, and save videos for later. These 33 practical tips focus on the iOS/iPadOS app. Some controls depend on your app version, account, region, video, or YouTube Premium; where that matters, it’s noted. YouTube’s current iOS app requires iOS 14 or later, and its Picture-in-Picture feature requires iOS 15 or later.
Master playback
1. Jump ahead or back by 10 seconds
Double-tap the right side of the video to jump forward 10 seconds; double-tap the left side to go back. Repeated taps generally add more 10-second jumps. It’s quicker than dragging the progress bar to skip an intro or replay a missed sentence. YouTube documents the playback gestures.
2. Hold for a quick 2× scan
Touch and hold anywhere on the video to play temporarily at 2× speed. Release to return to the previous speed. Use this to skim a familiar stretch; for longer listening, choose a lasting speed in the playback menu instead.
3. Set a playback speed that suits the video
Tap the video, then Settings → Playback speed. Try 1.25× for a modest time saving, 1.5× for a lecture or podcast, and 2× for material you already know. Slow playback can help with demonstrations, unfamiliar accents, interviews, or technical explanations. Available options can vary. See YouTube’s playback-speed instructions.

4. Scrub the timeline carefully
Tap the player to reveal its controls, then drag the playhead along the progress bar to move to another point. Scrubbing is useful for a broad jump, but a small slip can move you farther than intended; use the 10-second taps for fine adjustments.
5. Check chapters and the description
Look below the video for chapter labels and expand the description for context, links, or timestamps. Chapters can make a long documentary or tutorial easier to navigate, but they may be absent, inaccurate, or unavailable. They can be supplied by the creator or generated automatically.
6. Turn on captions
Tap the player and select CC when it appears. If there is no CC control, captions may not be available for that video. Automatic captions can also mishear names, accents, music, overlapping speakers, and specialist terms. YouTube explains caption controls.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning → Style to adjust the font, size, color, background, and opacity. You can enable Closed Captions + SDH to request captions automatically when available. These system settings change presentation; they cannot create captions for a video that has none.
8. Show captions while muted
On a video, tap the player and open Settings → Captions. Turn on Show when muted if that option is available in your app. The setting still depends on captions being available for the video.
9. Choose full-screen or a multitasking view
Rotate the device sideways and use the full-screen control for a larger view. If rotation does nothing, check whether orientation lock is enabled. On iPad, Split View or Stage Manager may be more useful than full-screen when you want to take notes alongside a lecture.

10. Know the difference between the players
The inline player previews a video in a feed. The mini-player keeps a video you already opened available while you browse YouTube; swipe down or use its minimize control where shown. Picture-in-Picture keeps playback in a floating window outside the app and has separate device and eligibility requirements.

11. Decide whether the next video should start automatically
Autoplay is useful for a playlist, workout, or lecture series; turn it off if you don’t want recommendations to roll into another video. Look for the autoplay control on the watch page or in app settings. Its placement and label can vary with the app version.
12. Limit video previews in feeds
Go to Profile picture → Settings → General → Playback in feeds. Choose Always on, Wi-Fi only, or Off, depending on the options shown. Feed playback can use mobile data and may contribute to watch history, so Wi-Fi only or Off is a sensible choice if you want to limit data use or recommendation signals. YouTube lists the feed-playback setting.
Search smarter
13. Narrow results with search filters
Search for a phrase, tap Filter, then choose available options such as upload date, type, duration, or subtitles/CC. For example, search for “beginner guitar chord tutorial,” then narrow by type or captions. Use upload date for changing subjects such as news, software, and current events. Filter choices can change. See YouTube’s search-filter help.
14. Make the query specific
Add the detail you actually need: a year (“iPadOS 2026 settings”), a device (“iPhone 15 camera settings”), a skill level (“beginner” or “advanced”), a format (“full course,” “review,” or “interview”), or an outcome (“fix,” “compare,” or “set up”). These are useful wording strategies, not special search operators with guaranteed results.
15. Decide what kind of result you want
Before searching, decide whether you need a long-form explanation, a Short for a quick demonstration, a livestream, a playlist or course, a podcast, or a particular channel. Search and filter controls differ, so don’t assume every content type appears as a filter in every version of the app.

16. Use a transcript to locate a topic
Expand the description and look for Show transcript or a similar transcript control when available. A transcript can help you find a named person or topic without scrubbing through an entire video. Transcripts may be missing, incomplete, automatically generated, or unavailable in a particular language.
17. Search from a channel you trust
If a creator regularly makes useful documentaries or tutorials, open the channel instead of searching all of YouTube again. Browse its Videos, Shorts, Live, playlists, or channel-search controls where available. This makes it easier to compare that creator’s coverage and find related installments.
18. Tune recommendations instead of tolerating them
On an unwanted recommendation, tap More and choose Not interested; choose Don’t recommend channel if offered. These actions guide recommendations, not create a guaranteed block across YouTube. Watch and search history, likes, account activity, and explicit feedback can all inform recommendations. YouTube describes recommendation controls and signals.

On a Shorts shelf on Home, open More and choose Show fewer Shorts if the option appears. This can reduce Shorts recommendations; it does not disable Shorts everywhere.
Save and share
20. Put a video in Watch Later
Tap Save or open the video’s three-dot menu and choose Watch later. Treat it as an inbox, not an archive: periodically remove videos you’ve watched or no longer plan to watch. Find it from the You tab.
21. Make playlists for specific purposes
Create focused lists such as “Weekend projects,” “Documentaries to watch,” “Workout videos,” or “Courses—unfinished.” A playlist is easier to use when its purpose is clear. YouTube says a playlist can display up to 5,000 videos; that figure is a display limit, not a promise about universal playlist storage. Learn about the You tab and playlists.

22. Check playlist privacy before sharing
Public playlists can be found by others; unlisted playlists are accessible to people with the link; private playlists have restricted visibility. Check the privacy label before sending a playlist link, especially if it includes personal or sensitive viewing choices.

Pause at the moment you want to share, tap Share, and look for a Start at or timestamp option if it appears. Mobile sharing controls vary. If the option is absent, use the timestamp controls in the sharing interface or open the video in a browser to see whether a timestamp link can be created.
24. Share a clip rather than the whole video
If the video and account are eligible, use Clip to select a segment and share its generated link. Clips are not available for every video, channel, livestream, or content category, so the control may not appear.
25. Cast to a TV
Tap the Cast icon when it is available and select a compatible TV or streaming device. Usually, the iPhone or iPad and receiver need to be on the same network; the phone then acts as a remote while the TV plays the video. Compatibility, network isolation, or being on different networks can keep the icon from appearing.
26. Open a link outside YouTube’s in-app browser
YouTube can open links in an in-app browser. To switch out, open the link, tap the menu in the top-right, and choose Open in external browser if shown. The in-app browser has its own link history and activity controls. YouTube explains its iOS in-app browser.
Control history, recommendations, and notifications
27. Use Incognito for a one-off viewing session
Tap your profile picture and choose Turn on Incognito. This makes the session behave more like YouTube use while signed out, so activity from the session is not saved to your normal account history in the usual way. Turn it off when finished. YouTube says an Incognito session ends after more than 90 minutes of inactivity. It is not a tool for network anonymity or complete privacy.

28. Pause search history temporarily
Go to Profile picture → Settings → Manage all history → Controls, then turn off Include your searches on YouTube. Use this for a temporary research task if you don’t want those searches shaping future suggestions. YouTube details history controls.
29. Delete a particular search
Open Profile picture → Settings → Manage all history to find and delete an individual entry, search for a specific activity, or use the calendar. Be careful with date-range deletion: it can also affect watch history for that period.
30. Repair recommendations at the source
If one video or search has sent recommendations off course, remove the relevant entry from watch or search history rather than automatically clearing everything. Use Not interested or Don’t recommend channel as well. For a temporary detour, pause history or use Incognito. Deleted searches no longer influence recommendations, and paused history is not saved; clearing all history can also remove useful personalization. Read YouTube’s explanation of recommendations.

In YouTube, open Profile picture → Settings → Notifications and adjust recommended-video alerts and other categories. To manage device-level permission, open iOS Settings → Notifications → YouTube. For an individual subscribed channel, tap its bell and choose All, Personalized, or None. Personalized does not mean every upload triggers an alert. If notifications are missing, check both YouTube’s controls and iOS permission. YouTube’s iPhone and iPad notification guide.
32. Turn on Restricted Mode when it fits
Sign in, then go to Profile picture → Settings → General → Restricted Mode to turn the filter on or off. Restricted Mode is not the same as an age restriction, supervised account, or full parental-control system. It may hide comments, and an administrator, school, library, mobile carrier, or network filter may enforce it. If the setting is locked or won’t change, check whether the device or network is managed. YouTube explains Restricted Mode.
Premium and multitasking tools
33. Use downloads, Smart Downloads, background play, and PiP where eligible
These features have different requirements, so one working does not guarantee the others will.
- Offline downloads: In the usual U.S. experience, downloads require YouTube Premium. Sign in to the eligible account, open a video, and tap Download; find saved videos under your profile picture → Downloads. Set quality at Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Download quality. Higher quality takes more storage and data. Availability depends on membership, region, and video eligibility; some countries have download options without Premium. Downloads may need an internet reconnection to verify availability—often within 29 days, with shorter periods such as 48 hours in some regions—and a video can disappear if it is removed or loses eligibility. Check account, storage, network, cellular-download settings, and the video’s eligibility if a download fails. Premium download help.
- Smart Downloads: For eligible Premium accounts, look under Profile picture → Downloads → menu → Settings → Smart Downloads. It can automatically add recommended videos and refresh them on a recurring cycle; storage settings help limit what is kept. YouTube’s Smart Downloads guide.
- Picture-in-Picture: Use iOS 15 or later. In iOS, enable Settings → General → Picture in Picture → Start PiP Automatically; in YouTube, enable Settings → Playback → Picture-in-Picture if available. Start a video and leave the app. Non-music videos and Shorts may be available to users without Premium, while music content such as official music videos and Art Tracks has stricter Premium requirements. If PiP fails, check iOS version and both settings, test non-music content, verify account or regional eligibility, update YouTube, then reopen the app. YouTube’s PiP requirements.
- Background play: This is separate from PiP and is a Premium benefit. Look in YouTube settings for Background Play; options may include Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers. Choose it if you want audio to continue with the screen locked or while using another app. See YouTube Premium benefits and limits.
Premium can remove YouTube-served ads, but creator-embedded sponsorships, branding, links, and some promotions can remain. Don’t assume Premium is required for every kind of PiP or that downloads work for every video or region.

If a tip or control isn’t working
First update YouTube and confirm your iOS version. Then check that you are signed into the intended account, that the setting is enabled in both YouTube and iOS where applicable, and that the feature is supported for your region, membership, device, and video. For downloads, check network access and free storage; for captions, PiP, or Clips, test another eligible video. If a control remains missing, close and reopen the app. Menu names and placement can change across app versions and staged rollouts.
The YouTube app offers more playback and account controls than the mobile website. The site can be a fallback when the app is unavailable, but YouTube says uploading and editing are not available on its mobile site. See YouTube’s mobile-browser guidance.
