Sky Stream is not Sky Q with the satellite dish removed. It is an internet-delivered service built around a small puck, streaming apps and a Playlist instead of a household hard drive. That changes what happens to recordings, how much your home network matters and how you find, pause and restart programmes.
The three most common mistakes are treating Playlist like a permanent recording library, judging the connection by broadband speed alone, and using the remote as if it were only for changing channels. Correct those assumptions and Sky Stream becomes much easier to set up and use.
1. Expecting Sky Stream to work like Sky Q
The biggest adjustment for Sky Q or Sky+ customers is that Sky Stream does not save programmes to a local hard drive. Sky Q recordings are stored on the old box itself; they are not transferable to Sky Stream. Before activating Stream, watch any recordings that matter to you or check whether they are available through catch-up or an on-demand service.
Sky Stream’s replacement for recording is Playlist. When you find a programme or series you want to follow, press the remote’s + button to add it. A series can collect available episodes in one place, while future episodes may appear through the service as they become available.

That is convenient, but it is not the same as owning a permanent copy. A Playlist entry may lead to live TV, on-demand programming or a supported app, and its availability can depend on the broadcaster, the app, your subscription and the relevant rights window. A show can therefore disappear, move to another service or require a separate app subscription.
What to do instead
- Review your Sky Q recordings first. There is no supported transfer of the old box’s hard-drive recordings to Sky Stream.
- Use + to add programmes and series to Playlist. Think of it as a way to organise and find available viewing, not as a permanent archive.
- Check where a programme is being supplied. An entry may open a Sky service or a supported app such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ or Disney+.
- Watch important recordings before switching. Do not assume that because a programme is currently on Sky Q it will remain available through Stream.
The useful rule: Sky Q recording means a programme is stored on your box. Sky Stream Playlist means the service will help you find available episodes. Those are different promises.
2. Assuming broadband speed alone guarantees a smooth picture
Sky Stream relies on your broadband connection, but the number advertised in your broadband package is only one part of the setup. Sky recommends at least 25 Mbps, or 30 Mbps when adding an extra puck or watching in UHD. Sky’s guidance says UHD needs a 4K-compatible television, the relevant Sky Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos subscription, and at least 30 Mbps; UHD with Whole Home can require 35 Mbps.
Those figures are useful minimum guidance, not a guarantee that every home will be trouble-free. Other people and devices may be using the connection at the same time, and the puck may receive a weaker or more congested Wi-Fi signal than a phone sitting beside the router. Distance, walls, interference and the location of the puck all matter.

Check the connection where the puck actually sits
Do not test broadband only beside the router and assume the result describes the television. The relevant connection is the one reaching the Sky Stream puck in its normal position.
- During setup or software updates, keep the puck close to the broadband hub or router. Sky’s troubleshooting guidance specifies less than 1.5 metres for this stage.
- If Wi-Fi is unreliable, try the puck’s Ethernet port. A wired connection can be more consistent in some homes, although it is not automatically faster or more convenient than good Wi-Fi.
- If you deliberately switch to Ethernet, check that the puck is using the intended connection. Sky Community guidance suggests that, on some setups, Wi-Fi may need to be disabled in the network’s advanced settings rather than simply leaving both connection methods active. Treat that as a practical troubleshooting suggestion, not a universal requirement.
- Consider simultaneous use: UHD streaming, video calls, downloads, gaming and other household streams can all affect available capacity.
If the router is close enough for a tidy wired run, a Cat6 Ethernet cable can be a practical way to test whether the puck’s Wi-Fi path is the problem. Choose a length based on the actual distance and route; it is not an essential purchase for every Sky Stream installation. The supplied HDMI cable should also normally be left in place unless it is damaged or you need a spare—replacing HDMI is not a general cure for buffering.
When better broadband is—and is not—the answer
If your service is below Sky’s recommended speed, fibre broadband may be worth investigating, subject to location, contract and provider availability. But buying a faster package will not automatically fix a weak signal between the router and puck. First check the puck’s location, test Ethernet where practical and look for heavy simultaneous usage. Homes with a distant router, thick walls or persistent Wi-Fi congestion may eventually benefit from home-networking equipment such as a mesh system, but that is a household-specific solution rather than a guaranteed Sky Stream fix.
3. Using Sky Stream like a basic channel-changing box
Sky Stream’s remote and viewing controls are part of the product’s workflow. If you only use channel up, channel down and volume, you miss several of the features that make the puck manageable.

Voice control requires the remote to be paired, the puck to be connected to the internet and a Sky Ultimate TV subscription. To pair the remote, hold 1 and 3 together for three seconds, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Voice search can be useful when you know the title, actor or subject you want, but it does not remove the need to understand where the result comes from. A search result may be live, on demand or supplied by an app, and viewing can still depend on the relevant subscription and rights.
Use Playlist, Restart and live controls for different jobs
These controls are easy to confuse:

In the UK, eligible BBC programmes may also provide a coloured-button route to restart or watch from the beginning. Do not assume that every channel or programme offers the same controls.
Do not assume every app behaves like Sky
Sky Stream can bring supported apps and Sky content into the same general viewing environment, but the apps still have their own accounts, catalogues and rules. You will generally need to sign in with the relevant app-account details. Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Disney+ are examples of supported services referenced in Sky’s guidance; availability and subscription requirements can change.

If Continue watching or recommendations are missing, check that you are signed in to the relevant apps and that personalisation is enabled. Sky says these features depend on personalisation settings, app data-sharing permissions where supported, and the viewer being signed in. Not every app supports the same integration, so an app may work on the puck without contributing fully to Sky’s recommendations or Continue watching area.

If the physical remote is inconvenient, the Sky Remote app can control a Sky Stream puck from a compatible phone or tablet when both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. That is useful as a backup, but it will not help if the puck itself is offline or the phone is on a different network.

Use this checklist before deciding that the service—or your television—is faulty:
- Protect old recordings: watch important Sky Q or Sky+ recordings before activating Stream; they cannot be transferred from the old hard drive.
- Measure the real connection: check broadband performance at the puck’s intended location, not just next to the router.
- Meet the relevant threshold: plan for 25 Mbps as Sky’s basic recommendation, 30 Mbps for an extra puck or UHD, and up to 35 Mbps for UHD with Whole Home.
- Check the UHD prerequisites: you need a 4K-compatible TV and the relevant Sky Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos subscription as well as sufficient broadband.
- Try the simplest network changes: temporarily move the puck within 1.5 metres of the router during setup or updates; test Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable.
- Confirm the active network path: if you switch to Ethernet, check the puck’s network settings rather than assuming the cable has automatically taken over.
- Pair the remote: hold buttons 1 and 3 for three seconds and complete the on-screen process.
- Learn the + button: add shows and series to Playlist, but do not treat entries as guaranteed permanent recordings.
- Use Restart where offered: live pause, rewind and Watch from start have different availability rules.
- Sign into apps: use each app’s account details and review personalisation and data-sharing settings if recommendations are incomplete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Sky Q recordings to Sky Stream?
No. Sky Q recordings are stored on the old box’s hard drive and cannot be transferred to Sky Stream. Some programmes may be available again through catch-up or on-demand services, so watch important recordings before switching.
