There are three legitimate ways to watch ESPN and ABC without paying for the first few days—or, in ABC’s case, without an ongoing monthly bill: start a five-day Fubo trial, start a five-day DIRECTV streaming trial, or use a digital TV antenna for your local ABC affiliate.
These are not three permanently free ESPN services. Fubo and DIRECTV are temporary trials that can become paid subscriptions, while an antenna can provide ongoing free over-the-air ABC reception but cannot receive the ESPN cable network. Channel availability, trial eligibility, prices, taxes, and promotional terms should be checked at signup because they can change.
At a glance
| What you want | Best option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN and ABC through one streaming service | Fubo five-day trial | Temporary trial; verify the local ABC affiliate and ESPN tier before subscribing |
| A second live-TV trial | DIRECTV five-day trial | Package, address, market, taxes, and eligibility affect the offer |
| ABC without a monthly subscription | Digital TV antenna | Requires suitable local reception and does not provide ESPN |
The information below reflects the offers and product descriptions checked for this article on August 12, 2026. Streaming offers and channel lineups are volatile, so confirm the final terms on the provider’s signup page.
1. Use Fubo’s five-day free trial
Fubo is the most direct single-service option if you want to try watching both ESPN and ABC through a live-TV streaming provider. Fubo currently advertises a five-day free trial, and its ABC streaming information identifies ESPN Unlimited among the available services.

That does not mean every Fubo customer automatically receives every ESPN service or a local ABC station. The exact package, ESPN tier, local-channel lineup, taxes, eligibility rules, and post-trial price should be checked for your address during signup.
How to use the Fubo trial
- Open Fubo’s current signup page and enter your location when prompted.
- Review the exact package and confirm that the ESPN service you need is included.
- Check the local-channel listing for your ABC affiliate. Local station availability can vary by market.
- Read the trial end date, payment terms, taxes, and price that will apply after the trial.
- Save the confirmation email and set a reminder several hours or a day before the trial expires.
- Cancel under Fubo’s stated terms if you do not want the subscription to convert to a paid plan.
Important: A “free trial” generally requires payment details and is free only for the stated period. Do not rely on deleting the app or removing it from your television to cancel the subscription; use the account or billing instructions supplied by the provider.
2. Try DIRECTV’s five-day streaming trial
DIRECTV is a second legal live-TV route. Its current streaming offer advertises a five-day free trial, and its package information identifies ESPN Unlimited. It may be useful if Fubo does not carry your local ABC affiliate or if a different package better fits your viewing needs.
DIRECTV’s channel availability is dependent on the package and market. Before starting the trial, enter the address the service requests and verify that the local ABC affiliate is included. Also confirm the precise ESPN access rather than assuming that every DIRECTV package contains the same networks or events.

How to check DIRECTV before starting the trial
- Go to the current DIRECTV streaming offer and enter your service address or ZIP code.
- Compare the displayed packages and identify the one that includes the ESPN service you need.
- Check the local-channel list for ABC at your address.
- Review the displayed trial duration, promotional price, regular price, taxes, and billing date.
- Record the date on which the five-day period ends.
- Cancel through DIRECTV’s account or billing controls before the trial ends if you do not want to continue.
DIRECTV’s offer can differ by location, package, and customer eligibility. The price or lineup shown to one household should not be treated as a guaranteed offer for another.
3. Use a digital TV antenna for free local ABC
A digital indoor or outdoor antenna is the only option in this list that can remain free of a monthly subscription after you purchase the hardware. It receives broadcast television from nearby stations, including a local ABC affiliate where one is available and reception conditions are adequate.
The FCC describes over-the-air television as free programming received with an antenna. However, reception is not guaranteed. Distance from the transmitter, terrain, tall buildings, walls, windows, wiring, interference, antenna placement, and the availability of a local ABC affiliate all matter.
An antenna can therefore show an ABC broadcast of a game or program when that event is carried by your local ABC station. It cannot receive the ESPN cable network and will not unlock ESPN-only games, shows, or events.

What you need
- An indoor HDTV antenna for a television near a suitable window or exterior wall, or an outdoor antenna when indoor reception is inadequate.
- A television with a built-in digital tuner, which most modern TVs have.
- A coaxial cable if the antenna does not include one or the supplied cable is too short.
- A separate digital TV tuner or converter only if your display does not have an integrated tuner.
Before buying, check the broadcast stations serving your location and the approximate direction of their transmitters. Treat advertised reception ranges as estimates rather than guarantees. An amplified antenna may help in some installations, but amplification cannot create a missing local signal or overcome every obstruction.
Antenna setup checklist
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the television’s antenna or RF input.
- Place an indoor antenna as high as practical, preferably near a window, and away from large metal objects and other sources of interference.
- Open the television’s channel settings and select Channel Scan, Auto Program, or the equivalent antenna/air mode.
- Run a full scan. Do not select cable mode unless the television is connected to a cable service.
- Check whether your local ABC station appears and whether the picture and audio remain stable.
- If the station is missing or unreliable, move the antenna, rescan, and test again. Broadcast-frequency changes can also make a new scan necessary.
Reception may be excellent in one room and poor in another. An antenna is a durable solution for local broadcast channels, but it is not a substitute for an ESPN subscription or an authenticated live-TV provider.
What “free ESPN” does—and does not—mean
ESPN’s current products include paid subscriptions such as ESPN Select at $12.99 per month and ESPN Unlimited at $29.99 per month. Those are not permanently free services.
ESPN also advertises a one-month ESPN Unlimited trial for new subscribers who purchase qualifying MLB.TV access. That is a conditional promotion tied to an MLB.TV purchase, not a no-strings ESPN free trial. It should not be presented as a general free way to watch ESPN.

- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness

The ESPN app likewise should not be treated as a free replacement for live television. Live networks, events, and replays generally require authentication through an affiliated television or internet provider. People who are not authenticated may still see clips and other non-live content, but that does not guarantee access to live ESPN programming.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.ABC’s own free streams are not a complete substitute
ABC’s live page currently exposes some ABC programming, local programming where available, and multiple free ABC News and local-news streams. Those unlocked streams can be useful, but they should not be confused with guaranteed access to every local ABC broadcast or every sports event shown on ABC.
If your goal is a particular local ABC game or program, check the schedule for your affiliate and confirm whether the broadcast is available over the air, through the provider trial, or through another authorized service. “ABC content available online” does not necessarily mean “every ABC network broadcast streams free.”
Which option should you choose?
Choose Fubo when…
- You want one live-TV service to try for both ESPN and ABC.
- Your address shows the required ESPN tier and local ABC affiliate.
- You are willing to cancel before the five-day trial ends if you do not want a paid subscription.
Choose DIRECTV when…
- Fubo does not carry your local ABC station or does not offer the package you need.
- You want to compare another live-TV provider’s lineup during a five-day trial.
- You have checked the package, address-specific channels, billing date, and post-trial price.
Choose an antenna when…
- You mainly need local ABC and want to avoid recurring charges.
- Your home has adequate reception from an ABC affiliate.
- You understand that ESPN-only programming will remain unavailable through the antenna.
What to avoid
Do not depend on unofficial streams, generic “free sports” websites, password sharing, or VPN-based location workarounds. They can be unreliable, unsafe, unauthorized, or contrary to a service’s terms, and none is necessary for the three legitimate approaches above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch ESPN completely free with an antenna?
No. An antenna can receive a local ABC affiliate, including programs or sports events simulcast on ABC, but it cannot receive the ESPN cable network or ESPN-only programming.
Are Fubo and DIRECTV permanently free?
No. Both currently advertise five-day trials. They may require payment details and can convert to paid subscriptions under their stated terms unless canceled in time.
Does the ESPN app provide all live ESPN channels for free?
No. Live ESPN networks, events, and replays generally require authentication through an affiliated TV or internet provider. Unauthenticated users may receive clips and other non-live content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will an antenna definitely receive ABC?
No. Reception depends on whether a local ABC affiliate serves the area, as well as distance, terrain, buildings, walls, antenna placement, and interference. Check local reception information and rescan after installation.
The Bottom Line
For both networks in one place, check the Fubo five-day trial first and confirm the exact ESPN tier and local ABC affiliate. If its lineup does not fit your market, check the DIRECTV five-day trial. For ongoing access to local ABC without a monthly bill, use a suitable digital TV antenna—but there is no general permanently free antenna-based route to ESPN.
