You can get a Kindle book in EPUB format in three legitimate ways: download an eligible DRM-free purchase directly from Amazon, convert a DRM-free Kindle file with calibre, or use an online converter such as Zamzar. The first option is simplest; calibre is usually the best private, repeatable solution.
The important limitation is DRM. A book merely appearing in your Kindle library does not mean Amazon provides a downloadable file, and ordinary conversion tools cannot convert a DRM-protected Kindle Store title. For those books, look for an authorized EPUB edition from the publisher, library, or another retailer rather than attempting to bypass the protection.
Choose the right method first

Amazon’s current DRM documentation says that eligible DRM-free Kindle books can be downloaded as EPUB or PDF by verified purchasers. Kindle Unlimited and other borrowed books are excluded. Availability can vary by country, account, title, and Amazon’s interface.

Method 1: Download the EPUB directly from Amazon
This is technically a download, not a conversion, and it is the cleanest route when the option is available.

- Open Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page.
- Find the purchased Kindle book in your digital content list.
- Open the book’s More actions menu.
- Look for an EPUB or PDF download option.
- Choose EPUB and save the file.
- Open it in your target reader, or import it into calibre for metadata cleanup.
The exact menu labels may differ by country, account, and interface version. If no EPUB option appears, that does not necessarily indicate a technical problem. The title may be DRM-protected, borrowed, unavailable for this feature, or accessible only inside Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem.
A Kindle Store book, a Kindle file, and a personal document are different things. A book you can read in the Kindle app may not exist as a freely accessible file on your computer. A personal document—such as a DOCX, PDF, or EPUB you sent to Kindle—is separate from a Kindle Store purchase and may already exist in its original format.
Method 2: Convert a DRM-free file with calibre
Calibre is the best general-purpose option when you already have a legitimate, DRM-free Kindle file. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, processes books locally, and lets you review metadata, covers, and table-of-contents settings.
Graphical interface steps
- Download and install calibre from its official website.
- Open calibre and select Add books.
- Choose the DRM-free Kindle file, such as AZW, AZW3, or MOBI.
- Select the imported book and click Convert books.
- Set the output format to
EPUB. - Check the title, author, cover, metadata, and table of contents.
- Click OK to begin conversion.
- When conversion finishes, right-click the book and choose Open containing folder.
- Open the EPUB in an EPUB reader before transferring it to another device.
Calibre can convert ebook formats and generate or transform metadata and table-of-contents information, but it is not a DRM-removal tool. If calibre reports that the source is encrypted or protected, stop and return to the authorized-download options.
For command-line use, calibre includes ebook-convert:

An online service such as Zamzar can convert a supported, DRM-free AZW or AZW3 file without installing desktop software.
- Open Zamzar’s ebook-to-EPUB converter.
- Select the DRM-free AZW or AZW3 file.
- Choose
EPUBas the output format. - Start the conversion.
- Download the result and open it in an EPUB reader.
This is convenient for a simple, non-sensitive file, but it has trade-offs. Your ebook is uploaded to a third-party service, and file-size limits, storage periods, account requirements, and download rules can change. Zamzar’s page notes that some files may require a paid account to download. Check its current consumer terms before uploading.
Do not use an online converter as a way to defeat DRM. A protected Kindle file is not an appropriate input for ordinary web conversion.
How to tell whether DRM is the problem
Start with Amazon’s direct EPUB option. If it is available, use it. If you have a downloaded file, try importing it into calibre. A file that imports and converts normally is likely readable by the software; a message that it is encrypted or DRM-protected means ordinary format conversion is not the solution.
If the book is borrowed through Kindle Unlimited or another lending arrangement, Amazon’s DRM-free EPUB/PDF download feature does not apply. Check whether the publisher, library, or another authorized retailer offers an EPUB edition instead.

Do not rely on old instructions involving DRM-removal plugins, registry edits, legacy Kindle applications, jailbreaks, or device-specific key extraction. Besides legal and security concerns, those methods can stop working when Amazon changes its delivery formats or software. Amazon’s help material also says its legacy Kindle for Windows app is unsupported as of June 30, 2026.
Transfer the EPUB to another reader
- Kobo or another EPUB ereader: use the manufacturer’s desktop, cloud, or USB import workflow.
- Apple Books: open or share the EPUB on an Apple device and choose Apple Books.
- Desktop reader: open the file directly in compatible reading software.
- Library or ebook manager: import the EPUB into the application’s library.
- Kindle: use Send to Kindle. Amazon accepts EPUB as an input format, but it processes the file for Kindle reading; it does not preserve it as a native EPUB on the device.

A successful conversion only means that a file was produced. It does not guarantee that every chapter link, image, font, table, footnote, or page element survived perfectly.

Test the EPUB in at least two readers if possible. If it looks wrong everywhere, the source or conversion settings are probably responsible. If it fails only on one device, the problem may be that reader’s EPUB support.

PDFs and fixed-layout books are especially difficult to convert cleanly because EPUB is generally reflowable. A reflowable book can change its page layout to fit the screen, while a fixed-layout book may depend on precise page positions, complex illustrations, equations, or spreads. Amazon warns that PDF formatting and images may not convert well.

Which method should you use?
- Use Amazon’s direct EPUB download whenever it appears for an eligible DRM-free purchase.
- Use calibre for private processing, repeated conversions, metadata editing, or batch work with DRM-free files.
- Use an online converter only for uncomplicated, non-sensitive, DRM-free files when avoiding installation matters more than privacy and control.
There is no universal one-click method for every Kindle book. The decisive questions are whether Amazon provides a downloadable source and whether that source is DRM-free and technically readable by the converter.
