At the end, he and his followers rescue Spike from infected attackers and invite him to join them. The film identifies Jimmy, but leaves much of his rise and the Jimmies’ history unexplained.
How the ending brings Jimmy and Spike together
After Isla dies, Spike returns briefly to Holy Island. He leaves the newborn baby with his father, Jamie, and a note explaining the child and his decision to leave again. Spike chooses to continue alone on the mainland.

Twenty-eight days later, infected attackers nearly overwhelm him. Jimmy Crystal and his blond-wigged followers arrive, fight the attackers with coordinated, acrobatic movements, and welcome Spike into their group. The ending’s reveal connects Jimmy to the boy shown surviving the first Rage Virus outbreak in the prologue.
The structure links two young survivors at different points in their lives: Jimmy, who witnessed his family’s destruction as a child, and Spike, who has just made a painful choice to set out on his own. Spike’s immediate coming-of-age arc reaches a turning point, but his future with Jimmy’s group is left open.

- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
What the film tells us about Jimmy
He leads a survivor faction
Jimmy is the leader of the Jimmies, a coordinated faction whose members act as extensions of him—his “fingers,” as he calls them. Sony’s official FAQ for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple describes the group as deadly and identifies Jimmy as its leader.
His beliefs are not proof of the supernatural
Sony’s FAQ says Jimmy preaches that he is the son of Old Nick and destined to claim dominion after the Rage Virus. That is Jimmy’s doctrine, not confirmation that the film’s world has established a supernatural explanation for his power or authority.
Rank #2
- Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later - but turning that world on its head - Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship - with consequences that could change the world as they know it - and Spike's (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) becomes a nightmare he can't escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival - the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.
His backstory is still largely untold
The first film does not show how Jimmy gathered followers, how the group formed, or its full hierarchy. His arrival gives Spike a new set of immediate circumstances, but it does not resolve what Jimmy wants from him or what joining the Jimmies will mean.
Why do Jimmy and his followers look alike?
The Jimmies wear flamboyant matching tracksuits, blond wigs, and conspicuous jewelry. The look evokes Jimmy Savile, the British television presenter whose abuse was revealed after his death; The Guardian notes the unsettling association, and Netflix Tudum also observes the resemblance.

From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
Neither the film nor those sources establishes that Jimmy knows about Savile’s crimes or deliberately imitates him for that reason. The association is an interpretive layer, not a confirmed explanation of the costumes within the story. The ending’s sudden, showy violence also sharply contrasts with Spike’s quieter grief and decision to leave—a contrast The Guardian reads as carrying the coming-of-age story into a new question about what survives culturally after catastrophe.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple continues directly after 28 Years Later, according to Sony’s official FAQs. Sony identifies Dr. Ian Kelson, Spike, and Jimmy Crystal as central characters. As of October 4, 2026, the studio says the follow-up is available to buy or rent through major digital retailers, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Sony Pictures Core; availability can vary by retailer and region.

For the ending’s core mystery, the essential distinction is simple: Jimmy is the child from the opening, now a faction leader who rescues Spike. How he became that leader, what drives him, and what happens to Spike among the Jimmies remain unanswered by the first film.
