Neither a Raspberry Pi 5 nor a cloud VM has a universal cost advantage for 24/7 YouTube streaming. A Pi shifts much of the expense to a one-time hardware build, electricity, and a reliable home internet connection; a VM has a recurring compute bill and may charge for outbound data. At common 1080p30 bitrates, the stream payload alone can exceed the transfer allowance listed for low-cost Amazon Lightsail plans. The right comparison depends on your actual bitrate, local power price, hardware, cloud region, and transfer charges.
What counts as the cost of a continuous stream?
Compare both options over the same operating period. For a Pi, include hardware you need to buy, accessories, electricity, and any incremental internet cost. For a VM, add compute, outbound transfer, and any required storage, IP, or software charges. A monthly VM headline price is not a complete streaming cost unless the VM can handle the workload and its transfer allowance and overage rules suit your stream.
- Pi already owned: treat the board as a sunk cost for a forward-looking operating comparison, but include any new accessories and ongoing costs.
- New Pi build: include the board, boot media, suitable USB-C supply, and cooling if needed. The available sources do not establish a complete system price.
- VM: check the selected region’s price, compute capacity, included transfer, and overage policy. The example plan figures below are published specifications, not proof that either plan can encode your stream.
No electricity rate or measured whole-system Pi power draw is established here, so a defensible total or universal winner cannot be stated without your own inputs.
What do the example cloud plans cost—and what do they include?
Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux bundle table lists these representative plans. AWS says plans accrue hourly charges up to the monthly plan cap; the least expensive starts at $0.0067 per hour ($5 per month). Stopping an instance does not stop charges; delete it to stop accruing them. These are AWS-published plan details, not a cost estimate for every region or a guarantee of streaming performance.

| $5/month | 0.5 GB | 2 | 20 GB | 1 TB |
| $7/month | 1 GB | 2 | 40 GB | 2 TB |
Before choosing a plan, verify current region-specific transfer rules and billing for sustained outbound streaming. The listed allowances and plan prices alone do not establish the final monthly bill.
How much data does a 24/7 stream use?
Bitrate is the key input for estimating payload. For 30 continuous days (2,592,000 seconds), a constant 5 Mbps sends about 1.62 decimal TB; at 14 Mbps it sends about 4.54 decimal TB. These are arithmetic estimates: bitrate multiplied by seconds and divided by eight, not provider invoices. Protocol overhead, restarts, and providers’ billing definitions can change actual billed traffic.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. On that basis, the 5 Mbps payload estimate exceeds the 1 TB listed with the $5 Lightsail plan, while the 14 Mbps estimate exceeds the 2 TB listed with the $7 plan. Verify regional transfer terms and any overage charge before treating either plan price as your total cost. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds); test with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health.

What does the Raspberry Pi 5 need to run the stream?
Raspberry Pi 5 uses a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor. It has no hardware H.264 encoder, so H.264 encoding relies on libx264 software encoding. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2026 performance note reports real-time 1080p30 encoding under its tested settings: low-latency settings used as little as 60% of one CPU core, while its high-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core. Those are test results, not a guarantee for every stream or for uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

The result can vary with source content, encoding preset, overlays, audio or video capture, software, cooling, and network reliability. If you already have the board, check actual CPU load and stream health with your intended content and settings before relying on it continuously.
Build and power considerations
- Pi 5 requires boot media such as a microSD card; it has no onboard storage.
- Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply rated at 5 V, 5 A. Its setup guidance says a 5 V, 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals to 600 mA.
- Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance. Cooling needs depend on the setup and workload; the guidance does not establish that every installation requires a particular cooler.
How to calculate your own break-even point
Use your measured wall power, local electricity rate, actual stream bitrate, and the cloud region and billing rules you would use. Ordinary home broadband should count as an incremental cost only if the stream changes your plan or bill.

- Local monthly electricity: measured average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × days × local currency per kWh.
- Local total over N months: hardware not already owned + accessories + N × (electricity and incremental internet cost).
- Cloud monthly total: VM price + applicable outbound transfer + required storage, IP, or software charges.
- Stream payload: bitrate Mbps × 3,600 × hours ÷ 8,000 gives approximate decimal GB.
For a first-year comparison, include a new Pi build’s upfront cost, then show later recurring costs separately. If the Pi is already owned, show that case separately rather than implying a new buyer faces the same initial outlay. For the cloud, use a plan and region that can handle the actual encoding workload and verify transfer billing; do not infer that from a bundle’s headline price.
Which option fits your setup?
| Consideration | Raspberry Pi 5 | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Board and any required accessories if not already owned; a complete build price is not established here. | No local streaming computer is needed, but compute and any other required services recur. |
| Electricity and connection | Uses local electricity and depends on the home upload connection and its availability. | Runs in the provider’s environment; compute and outbound transfer costs depend on the chosen plan and region. |
| Encoding capability | Pi 5 uses software H.264 encoding; published 1080p30 results apply to specified test settings, not all workloads. | The Lightsail bundle table gives vCPU and memory specifications, but does not establish that a listed plan can encode a particular stream. |
| Continuity and recovery | Needs an operational plan for power, network interruptions, restarts, and stream recovery. | Needs an operational plan for VM and stream interruptions; cloud hosting alone does not establish uninterrupted YouTube delivery. |
Choose only after checking CPU headroom for your actual preset and source, measured local power draw and rate, home upload stability, VM compute size and regional price, transfer allowance and overage terms, and your restart and recovery requirements.
Plan for YouTube’s stream and archive behavior
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions call for entering its server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use the key and RTMPS guidance from YouTube’s current setup information, and test the stream before relying on a long broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer-running channel, plan how to handle restarts and archive segmentation; the cited guidance does not promise a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
Also confirm you have the rights to stream the video, music, and other material in your playlist. A continuous stream does not make copyrighted or reused material permissible, and no setup method guarantees YouTube will accept a stream or archive. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to managing a Pi or VM: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Details: StreamNeo.
