Using the listed DigitalOcean configurations, a Droplet kept deployed around the clock costs $6/month on Basic or $42/month on CPU-Optimized—$72 or $504 over 12 months at unchanged prices. Those are compute plan costs, not a guaranteed total for a YouTube stream: outbound transfer over the included team pool, add-ons, and taxes can change the bill. DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized as suitable for media streaming, but its guidance is not a YouTube-specific performance test.
Basic vs. CPU-Optimized: listed plan costs and resources
The figures below are for representative configurations on DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing page, checked October 3, 2026. Pricing and allowances can change; recheck the page before budgeting.
| Configuration | CPU | RAM / vCPU | Included transfer | Listed hourly rate | Listed monthly cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Shared | 1 GiB / 1 | 1,000 GiB | $0.00893 | $6 |
| CPU-Optimized | Dedicated | 4 GiB / 2 | 4,000 GiB | $0.06250 | $42 |
The entry CPU-Optimized example costs seven times as much as the listed Basic example. It also has four times the RAM and included transfer, twice the vCPUs, and dedicated rather than shared CPU. This is not a like-for-like resource comparison. The listed monthly prices are compute plan figures, not an all-in streaming quote. DigitalOcean pricing
What 24/7 operation costs over a month or year
For a Droplet that remains deployed all month, the listed monthly cap is the practical compute comparison: $6 for the cited Basic configuration and $42 for CPU-Optimized. At the same prices for 12 months, that is $72 and $504, a difference of $36 per month or $432 per year. These annual totals are calculations from the monthly prices, not separately published rates; they assume prices stay unchanged and exclude add-ons, taxes, and outbound transfer overages. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
DigitalOcean says bundled CPU Droplets are billed per second, with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum, and usage is capped at 672 hours per month. The displayed hourly rates should therefore not be multiplied by every hour in a calendar month to estimate a continuously deployed Droplet: the monthly cap is the relevant limit. A powered-off Droplet still incurs compute charges because its resources remain reserved; destroy it to stop compute billing. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing documentation
How transfer charges can change the total
The cited Basic configuration includes 1,000 GiB and CPU-Optimized includes 4,000 GiB. DigitalOcean pools outbound transfer across a team’s Droplets rather than treating each allowance as an isolated stream budget. Outbound transfer beyond the team pool is priced at $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free. The effective bandwidth charge therefore depends on the team’s total eligible outbound usage, not only on this Droplet’s stream. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing documentation

A monthly data estimate cannot be responsibly calculated from the plan figures alone: it depends on the stream’s bitrate, delivery and audience setup, and other usage drawing on the pool. No stream bitrate or audience architecture is specified here, and the plan price should not be presented as a complete YouTube streaming bill.
Which plan fits a YouTube streaming workload?
Basic: lower cost, shared CPU
DigitalOcean presents Basic as a lower-cost choice for workloads that underuse dedicated threads and can tolerate variable CPU levels. It may be appropriate when the actual workload fits shared CPU, but the lower price by itself does not establish that a particular encoder or streaming process will run reliably on it. CPU-Optimized: dedicated CPU for sustained processing
DigitalOcean positions CPU-Optimized for applications that need fast, consistent performance, including media streaming. Its plan-selection documentation describes the family as having roughly a 2:1 memory-to-CPU ratio, and the official calculator also identifies dedicated CPU plans for media streaming and other CPU-intensive work. This provider guidance may support choosing the higher-cost tier when sustained CPU capacity or encoding/transcoding is needed; it does not establish a minimum YouTube configuration or demonstrate that CPU-Optimized is necessary for every stream. Costing a self-hosted stream versus a cloud looping service
If you need a Droplet because you want to run and manage your own streaming process, budget for the monthly compute cap plus any applicable transfer overage and other services. If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream without maintaining a computer or Droplet, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and its listed service includes looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
StreamNeo charges one flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free without a card; one free day is available per account. For one slot, the monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing for current details, or start the free day.
