24/7 YouTube Streaming Cost: Gaming PC vs. Office PC Power Draw

There is no universal cost difference between a gaming PC and office PC streaming 24/7. Measure each machine’s average wall draw under the same stream settings and calculate the bill using your local electricity rate.

There is no reliable universal bill difference between leaving a gaming PC and an office PC streaming to YouTube around the clock. The answer depends on each computer’s average power draw at the wall while the stream is running and your local electricity rate. Measure both under the same streaming conditions, then use the calculation below.

How to calculate the monthly electricity cost

For continuous use over a 30-day month:

Monthly cost = average wall watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh.

The calculation first converts watts used over time into kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiplies by the rate you pay. Use the marginal rate that applies to the additional electricity on your current bill; rates and billing structures vary by utility and location.

Example: Microsoft’s historical illustration

Microsoft measured one older test PC at 102 W while idle. At the article’s example rate of $0.10/kWh, the arithmetic is 102 W × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 73.44 kWh per month, or $7.34. This is an illustration using a 2011 test system and historical example rate—not a current electricity price or a representative office-PC estimate. Microsoft says its PC-only measurement excluded peripherals. Microsoft’s measurement and calculation example

Measure the PCs under comparable streaming conditions

A meaningful gaming-PC-versus-office-PC comparison requires the same workload and measurement scope. Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to record power at the wall while each computer runs the actual stream. A single instant reading may not represent average draw; measure over a representative period.

Keep these details consistent and record them

  • Streaming workload: Match resolution, frame rate, encoder and content as closely as possible. YouTube’s recommended incoming bitrates vary with resolution, frame rate and codec, but its guidance does not state how much power an encoder PC will use. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance
  • Measurement scope: Decide whether you are measuring only the PC or also its monitor and peripherals. Include the same items for both setups; a PC-only figure cannot be compared fairly with a whole-desk figure.
  • Average wall watts: Record the meter’s reading over a representative period while the stream is operating, rather than substituting the PC’s advertised specifications.
  • Electricity rate: Use the applicable per-kWh rate from your current bill or tariff, not an example from an old article.

YouTube explains that “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Its live-stream guidance covers encoder settings and delivery; it does not provide PC power measurements. YouTube’s encoder guide

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

What the published figures can—and cannot—tell you

Available published examples do not establish a current, representative head-to-head result for an office PC and gaming PC running the same YouTube stream 24/7.

  • Gaming-computer model: A 2016 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory paper estimated 1,394 kWh per year, including a display, for a modeled typical gamer using gaming mode an average of 4.4 hours per day. It estimated an approximate $200 annual cost at typical household electricity prices. These are historical modeled gaming-use figures, not a 24/7 streaming bill; the paper’s assumptions include one display, no peripherals, no overclocking and power-saver settings. It says high-performance work-computer use was not included. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2016 paper
  • GPU test result: The same paper reported 25% energy savings across a specific Unigine Heaven benchmark test cycle with a more efficient GPU. That test excluded the display; it is not a forecast for a different GPU in a streaming workload.
  • Older PC measurements: Microsoft’s 2011 test system measured 102 W idle, 125–165 W under its listed CPU loads and 4 W in S3 sleep. Those measurements describe that older setup, not current office PCs or a matched YouTube-streaming comparison. Microsoft’s 2011 article

Do not use a power supply’s rated capacity, a GPU’s thermal design power (TDP), or a broad wattage estimate as if it were measured wall draw. Those numbers do not tell you what the complete PC averages during your particular stream.

Compare the gaming PC and office PC fairly

Make a side-by-side record after measuring each system with the same stream settings, runtime and included equipment. Calculate kWh and cost from the measured average and apply the same local rate.

Comparison item Gaming PC Office PC
Average wall draw while streaming Your measured average watts Your measured average watts
Stream resolution, frame rate and encoder Record settings Match and record settings
Measurement includes PC only, or PC plus display/peripherals Use the same scope
Monthly energy at 24 hours/day for 30 days Average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 kWh Average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 kWh
Monthly electricity cost Monthly kWh × your rate per kWh Monthly kWh × the same rate per kWh

The lower measured cost identifies the cheaper system to run for that workload and measurement scope. It does not establish that every office PC is cheaper than every gaming PC; measure the actual machines you plan to use.
