To send video to YouTube Live, create or open a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into an encoder, configure a compatible video and audio output, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; HLS is an option for HDR or codecs RTMP does not support when your encoder can output HLS.
What you need before sending video
- A YouTube channel with access to live streaming and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio.
- An encoder: a webcam and software encoder can suit a basic single-source stream; a hardware encoder may fit a higher-production setup.
- A stable connection with enough outbound upload bandwidth for the full stream bitrate, plus headroom for network variation and other users.
- The stream URL and matching stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
YouTube says its standard Live Control Room workflow detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to match your encoder’s output to its capabilities and YouTube’s current guidance. Check the latest YouTube encoder settings table before an important broadcast; supported codecs and values can change.
Create a YouTube stream and connect your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a scheduled stream or choose the Stream tab for the stream you are setting up.
- Open Stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. If your encoder offers a YouTube preset, use it; otherwise enter the URL and key in the encoder’s server and key fields. Keep the key private. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it; update the encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Choose the ingestion protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS. In Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL using the lock icon; the displayed default URL may be ordinary RTMP. Confirm the encoder is configured for RTMPS rather than RTMP. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio format. Use the settings below as starting points, and make sure the encoder can actually produce them.
- Start the encoder. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream health status, then inspect the picture and audio. When you are ready to broadcast, select Go live in YouTube.
- For a scheduled production, set up early and start the encoder before the event so you can check the incoming feed. At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop sending encoder content. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose a protocol: RTMPS or HLS
RTMPS for encrypted RTMP ingestion
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube recommends it to encrypt the feed into and through Google’s servers. Select it when your encoder supports it, and copy the RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room rather than assuming the ordinary displayed URL is secure.
HLS for HDR or unsupported RTMP codecs
YouTube positions HLS ingestion as an alternative for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. You need an encoder that can output HLS. The HLS endpoint begins with HTTPS; select HLS when creating the appropriate stream key and follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. For HDR, YouTube’s instructions say to leave manual resolution unchecked.

Encoder settings: codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, its advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709; for HDR it specifies H.265, and AV1 is not supported for HDR. Five-channel-one audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm details in the official encoder settings table for your chosen protocol and stream type.
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. The following are YouTube-published H.264 bitrate recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that a device or connection can sustain a stream:

| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube Help; publication year is not stated on the source page. Bitrate recommendations differ by codec: for example, YouTube lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 and H.265 at 1080p/30 fps, and 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended at 2160p/60 fps. Use the full table for other combinations rather than interpolating a value.
Check upload bandwidth and rehearse
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of available upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and account for other people and devices sharing the connection. A network interruption can disrupt the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Rehearse with movement and sound similar to the actual program; a static test image may not reveal the same encoding or audio issues.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health messages, then verify the public or unlisted watch page and playback on a phone.
- If you depend on a backup encoder, rehearse failover rather than assuming it will take over cleanly.
- For equipment choices, match camera and audio inputs, protocol support, codec, resolution and frame rate to the production. A webcam and software encoder may be enough for a simple setup; a hardware encoder is an option for more involved productions. YouTube describes these as categories, not endorsements of specific models.
Troubleshoot ingestion problems
The encoder will not connect or the key is rejected
Check that the stream is open in Live Control Room and that the encoder has the current stream URL and key. If the key was reset, replace it in the encoder. If the encoder’s YouTube integration is outdated, update it. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide covers connection and encoder checks.
RTMPS shows an SSL error or times out
Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS, that RTMPS is selected, and that you copied the secure endpoint rather than the ordinary RTMP URL. If an SSL error persists, YouTube suggests checking the protocol and server and trying port 443.

Video is unstable or stream health is poor
Compare the configured bitrate with available upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. Check whether other traffic is consuming bandwidth and whether the connection is reliable. If necessary, reduce the bitrate or output target to a combination your encoder and connection can sustain, then test again.
Picture or sound is wrong
Inspect the source signals routed into the encoder and confirm the selected inputs, codec and output format. Rehearse with representative motion and audio, then use the preview and stream health messages to isolate whether the problem is present in the incoming feed.

You need HDR or an RTMP-unsupported codec
Check whether your encoder supports HLS output. If it does, configure the HLS protocol, HTTPS URL and corresponding stream key using YouTube’s HLS instructions.
Copyright and the content you send
Sending a technically valid feed does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its contents. Before streaming, confirm you have permission for the video, music and other material in the program, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules. An encoder or ingestion protocol cannot make unlicensed content safe to broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a pre-recorded video looping on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. Your computer can be off; it supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
