To estimate the electricity cost of running a Mac mini for a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, measure its average power draw at the wall, convert watts to kilowatt-hours, and multiply by your electricity rate. The formula is average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760 × local price per kWh for a year. Whether that is cheaper than cloud hosting depends on your actual streaming workload, the cloud plan’s data-transfer limits, and the value you place on maintenance and recovery—not on electricity alone.
How to calculate the Mac mini’s 24/7 electricity cost
Use the average power draw of the complete setup while it is streaming, measured at the wall. Then apply your electricity provider’s applicable rate:
Annual electricity cost = average watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— 8,760 Ă— local price per kWh.
For a 30-day month, use average watts Ă— 24 Ă— 30 Ă· 1,000 to estimate kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your rate. If your bill uses time-of-use prices, calculate with the rate that applies during the hours the Mac mini runs.

Apple’s figures are reference points, not streaming measurements
Apple’s current power-consumption table lists the 2024 M4 Mac mini at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum, measured at the wall with power-supply and system losses included. Apple defines idle as Finder open with default power-management settings; maximum is a compute-intensive test. Neither figure measures a continuous YouTube stream. For a more accurate estimate, measure the configured Mac mini and any equipment you intend to leave on while streaming.
Using those two figures only as arithmetic examples, 4 W corresponds to 35.04 kWh per year and 65 W to 569.4 kWh per year. They are not predictions of the machine’s actual streaming draw. The estimate also excludes the Mac mini’s purchase price and depreciation, network equipment, separate displays or peripherals, and any additional cooling.

A U.S. benchmark calculation
At the U.S. residential average of 17.30 cents per kWh reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for 2025, those illustrative energy totals work out to about $6.06 per year at 4 W and $98.51 at 65 W. These are national-average calculations using Apple’s idle and maximum reference figures, not actual stream measurements or a prediction of your bill. The EIA’s May 2026 average was 18.44 cents per kWh; regional and household rates vary, so use your own tariff. See the EIA’s Electric Power Monthly data.
What a cloud-hosting price does—and does not—tell you
Amazon Lightsail documentation lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 bundle at $5 per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB of transfer. That is an entry-level listed bundle, not proof that the instance can encode your chosen video reliably or keep a 24/7 stream within its transfer allowance. Check workload fit, outbound data charges or limits, storage needs, service availability, and the administration required. Check AWS Lightsail pricing and plan details.

A fair comparison is not “Mac electricity versus a cloud plan.” Compare the full recurring bill and responsibilities on each side. A Mac mini you already own may have little incremental hardware cost, while buying one for this purpose introduces acquisition and depreciation. A cloud instance avoids running that computer at home but may require configuration, monitoring, and bandwidth management. A managed streaming service bundles some of that work differently; check its current limits and terms rather than assuming every service handles the same workload.
Keep the YouTube stream technically viable
A continuously looping playlist still needs an encoder to send a live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.

Encoder settings to check
- Connection: Use YouTube’s secure RTMPS guidance and the server URL shown in your Live setup.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and output: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to your selected stream quality and the source video.
- Network and compute: Confirm the Mac mini can sustain the chosen encode and upload continuously. YouTube’s automatic transcoding for viewers does not eliminate the need for a correctly configured upstream encoder and stable connection.
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full, so do not rely on a single continuous stream for a complete archive.

- Measured power and electricity tariff: Use the configured Mac mini’s average draw and the rate on your bill.
- Cloud or service charges: Include transfer, storage, and any other charges beyond the advertised base price.
- Workload capability: Verify that the chosen machine or service can sustain the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to send.
- Operations: Account for setup, monitoring, maintenance, interruption recovery, and the control you want over the encoder.
- Hardware economics: Separate the marginal cost of running a Mac mini you already own from the cost of buying and depreciating one for the stream.
When a Mac mini can make sense
A Mac mini may be attractive if you already own it, can measure a modest workload draw, want direct control of the encoder, and are comfortable managing interruptions and updates. Its electricity cost alone may be small, but that does not include the equipment’s purchase cost or the time and infrastructure needed to keep the stream running.
When cloud hosting may make sense
Cloud hosting may suit you if you do not want a computer running at home or need a remotely managed environment. Compare the complete service cost with the Mac mini’s measured operating cost, and verify the instance’s encoding capability and data-transfer economics before moving a 24/7 stream.
