Mirza Ghalib’s couplet “Aadmi ko bhi muyassar nahi insan hona” draws a sharp distinction between being a person and becoming fully human. In the Ministry of Home Affairs’ English translation, the thought is rendered: “It’s not easy for every task to be easy as it’s difficult for man to be human.” Ghalib’s poetry makes humanity an ethical and inward achievement, not merely a fact of birth.
Why the 227-year anniversary matters
Ghalib was born in Agra on 27 December 1797. The phrase “227 years” refers to the anniversary marked in 2024, not his age today. A 2024 Scroll essay by Amir Suhail Wani uses the occasion to revisit the questions his couplets pose about human nature, mystery and existence.
Calling Ghalib a “mystic poet” is best understood here as an interpretive lens. Wani reads selected verses alongside Indo-Persian mystical and metaphysical traditions, including ideas associated with unity of being. That approach illuminates the poems, but it is not the only possible reading or a settled biographical label.
What does “Aadmi ko bhi muyassar nahi insan hona” mean?
The couplet, as printed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, is: “Bus key dushwar hai har kaam ka aasan hone / Aadmi ko bhi muyassar nahi insan hona.” The ministry’s English rendering is: “It’s not easy for every task to be easy as it’s difficult for man to be human.” Transliteration and translation can vary; the English phrasing here belongs to that ministry release.

The key contrast is between aadmi, a person or man in the ordinary sense, and insaan, a person realized as humane. Ghalib’s wording turns humanity into something difficult to attain. We may be human by birth, yet qualities such as compassion, self-knowledge and moral seriousness do not follow automatically. The line does not offer a checklist of virtues; its force lies in making the gap itself unsettling.
That distinction also keeps the verse from becoming a simple moral slogan. Ghalib does not say that becoming humane is easy if one follows a formula. Instead, the couplet places the ordinary human being before a demanding possibility: to become what the word “human” promises.

Human limits and the mystery beyond appearances
Wani’s reading places this ethical question beside Ghalib’s larger concern with what people can know. The poems repeatedly turn toward existence, divine presence and the limits of rational explanation. In this frame, the difficulty of becoming fully human belongs to a wider uncertainty: people encounter reality, but cannot assume that appearances disclose all of it.
Scroll quotes another couplet in Urdu script transliteration: “Jab ki tujh bin koi nahi maujood / Phir yeh hangama ae Khuda kya hai”. Wani uses it to raise a question about existence and divine presence. The verse’s question is not a neatly resolved theological statement; it stages the tension between an all-encompassing divine presence and the apparent commotion of the world.

Read together, the verses suggest that Ghalib’s poetry can hold moral inquiry and metaphysical doubt at once. The human task is not just to behave well in a known world, but to live with the limits of what can be known about that world. This is Wani’s interpretive account of selected couplets, rather than proof that one philosophical tradition explains Ghalib in full.
Was Ghalib a practising Sufi?
The Scroll essay explicitly notes that it is not known whether Ghalib was a practising Sufi or had pledged allegiance to a spiritual master. His poetry can be read through mystical traditions without turning that reading into a definitive claim about his formal religious affiliation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs release also quotes Ghalib as saying, “My creed is oneness, my belief renunciation of rituals.” That is the release’s English translation. It offers a glimpse of how Ghalib could express a preference for unity over ritual observance, but a translated line alone cannot settle the question of his religious practice.

A 2006 Ministry of Home Affairs release reports that Ghalib’s Urdu poems total “no more than 1,800 lines.” The figure applies to the Urdu poems described in that release; it should not be treated as a count of his Persian poetry or as a definitive total across every edition or corpus.

The compactness of the Urdu body of work makes the density of individual couplets especially striking: a few lines can open onto questions of conduct, knowledge and existence without closing them down.
Where to begin reading Ghalib
Readers choosing an English-language edition should check what the particular volume actually provides. Ghalib’s original Urdu or Persian text, transliteration, translation style and explanatory notes can differ substantially between editions. A translation may favor literal wording, poetic effect or interpretation; the choice changes what a reader can see in a couplet.
Springer’s publisher page for The Handbook of Mirza Ghalib’s Poetry and Poetics: Commentaries and Contemporary Concerns describes it as an English-language commentary and introduction to Ghalib and the ghazal tradition. It is one possible contextual resource; prospective readers should review its description and contents to see whether it suits their needs.
