“Going country” can mean a full album, a sustained solo career, a duet, or just one country-leaning song. These 21 examples span all four—and include pop, soul, rap, and alternative artists as well as rockers. They are grouped by the kind of country connection, not ranked by how surprising it was.
Artists who made country albums or sustained a country turn
1. Tina Turner
Before her best-known solo hits, Turner released Tina Turns the Country On!, an album of songs associated with Dolly Parton, Hank Snow, Loretta Lynn, and Kris Kristofferson. Country was part of her early solo repertoire, not a late-career reinvention. Tell Me Best lists the album among its unexpected country turns.
2. Ray Charles
The soul singer made a deliberate cross-genre statement with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. Rather than treating country as a novelty cameo, Charles centered an album on the material and style, bringing his own phrasing to country and western songs. Tell Me Best and the Houston Press include the album in their roundups.
3. Bob Dylan
Nashville Skyline is Dylan’s country-oriented album, recorded in Nashville and including a duet with Johnny Cash as well as “Lay Lady Lay.” The Houston Press describes his vocal delivery on the record as notably different from his earlier style. That is an observation about this album, not a claim that Dylan permanently left his other musical directions behind. Tell Me Best also identifies it as a country album.

4. Elvis Costello
For Almost Blue, Costello recorded country standards in Nashville, taking on a songbook rather than simply adding a country-flavored track to a rock record. It is a focused album project, not evidence of a permanent genre change. Tell Me Best discusses the album and its country repertoire.
5. Van Morrison
Morrison’s Pay the Devil brought together country covers and originals. The combination makes it more than a one-song detour, while still best understood as a country album within a much broader career. Tell Me Best describes the record as country-oriented.
6. Cyndi Lauper
Lauper’s 2016 album Detour revisited early country classics and included Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. The move was less abrupt than it might appear: before her solo pop success, she had been in the rockabilly band Blue Angel. Tell Me Best covers the album and its guests.
7. Bret Michaels
Poison’s frontman carried country beyond a single experiment with Freedom of Sound, an album that also recast Poison songs in country style. It includes “All I Ever Needed,” a collaboration with Jessica Andrews. Tell Me Best identifies the album and collaboration.

8. Steven Tyler
Aerosmith singer Tyler pursued country as a solo project, releasing the single “Love Is Your Name” and the album We’re All Somebody from Somewhere. This was a distinct country chapter alongside his work with Aerosmith, rather than a band-wide switch. Tell Me Best lists both releases.
9. Tiffany
Known for pop, Tiffany made a country-oriented turn with the song and album Rose Tattoo. The documented connection here is the album project; it should not be mistaken for a claim that her entire career became country. Tell Me Best identifies the release.
10. Ween
The alternative band’s 12 Golden Country Greats is an overt country pastiche made with Nashville session players. It is an unusual album concept, not a lasting conversion of Ween into a country band. Tell Me Best describes the record as a country project.
Country collaborations and crossover songs
11. Sheryl Crow
Crow’s “Picture,” recorded with Kid Rock, became a country crossover point in both artists’ catalogs. She later recorded “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Loretta Lynn and Miranda Lambert, another direct link to country repertoire and performers. These are collaborations and songs, not a wholesale move away from her other styles. Tell Me Best and the Houston Press discuss her country connections.

12. Kid Rock
Kid Rock’s country connection grew from the crossover success of “Picture” with Sheryl Crow into a broader southern-rock and country-leaning direction. That makes his arc more sustained than a guest appearance, while still not amounting to a simple abandonment of rock. The Houston Press and Tell Me Best both include him among rockers with country ties.
13. Nelly
Rapper Nelly crossed into country through collaborations: “Over and Over” with Tim McGraw, followed later by a remix of Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.” Those tracks put him in country-pop company without establishing a full country album or career pivot. Tell Me Best identifies both collaborations.
14. Lionel Richie
Tuskegee paired Richie with country performers on new versions of his songs. The format is a duet and collaboration album, offering a country setting for familiar material rather than evidence that Richie left soul or pop behind. Tell Me Best covers the project.
15. Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi connected with country audiences through “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” recorded with Jennifer Nettles, and later released the album Lost Highway. The band’s country crossover is clear, but claims that it was the first rock band to top a country chart are not repeated here: the available roundup is not an original chart record. Tell Me Best and the Houston Press document the song and album connection.

16. Darius Rucker
After becoming known as Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Rucker pursued a country solo career. Roundups cite “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” as a country-chart number one and mention CMA recognition; without the original chart and award records in hand, the safer point is the larger one: his country work became a sustained direction, not just a guest duet. Tell Me Best and the Houston Press describe the transition.
17. The Doobie Brothers
On Southbound, the Doobie Brothers re-recorded familiar songs with country artists including Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band, and Brad Paisley. The album is a collaborative reworking project, not a conversion of the band’s catalog or identity to country. Taste of Country discusses Tom Johnston and the project.

18. Jerry Lee Lewis
Lewis is not simply a rock and roll star who discovered country late: his musical history crossed those genres early. Country songs including “Another Place, Another Time” and a later run of country hits are part of that longer overlap. Tell Me Best includes his country material.
19. Conway Twitty
Twitty represents the reverse of the familiar late-career pivot. He began in rock and roll and pop before becoming a country star, so his example fits a broad “rockers to country” list but not the narrower story of an established rock act turning country years later. Tell Me Best traces that direction.

20. Metallica’s James Hetfield
“Mama Said,” from Metallica’s Load, is a country-leaning ballad featuring Hetfield in a different musical setting from the band’s heavier sound. It is a song-level detour, not a country turn by Metallica as a whole. The Houston Press identifies the track as a country-flavored example.
21. Shinedown
In a 2026 interview, Shinedown described “Searchlight” as developing from a rock ballad toward a steel-guitar country feel; the band also performed it at the Grand Ole Opry. That makes it a recent country-leaning song and performance, not proof of a full country album or career change. Taste of Country reported the account on February 28, 2026.
Why rock and country keep crossing paths
The boundary has never been a sealed one. Country can enter rock through steel guitar, song choice, vocal phrasing, or a Nashville recording session; rock and punk musicians can also find common ground with country and Americana without changing their whole careers. PBS SoCal’s account of Dwight Yoakam’s early Los Angeles cowpunk years places that overlap in a regional scene, while interviews with Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett and John Fogerty discuss connections between rock and country.
