The 2025 holiday season offered a mixed slate rather than a single “Christmas movie” pipeline: selected documentaries, comedies, family animation and horror appeared across theaters, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix. This retrospective focuses on notable U.S.-oriented releases reported for fall and December 2025; it is not a complete list of every network, streamer or independent distributor.
Because these schedules are now historical, a service named below describes the announced or reported 2025 route—not guaranteed availability in your country or in a 2026 catalog.

The release-route distinction matters: a December theatrical title is not automatically a streaming premiere, and a platform announcement from 2025 does not establish a title’s present catalog status.

The Merchants of Joy: a documentary alternative
Amazon’s 2025 fall slate described this documentary through five New York families who spend each winter selling Christmas trees. Its seasonal work, family relationships and real-world setting make it the clearest choice here for documentary viewers who want holiday atmosphere without a fictional romance. Amazon listed it for Prime Video in December 2025.

Oh. What. Fun.: a family-comedy premise with a sharper edge
Michelle Pfeiffer plays Claire Clauster, an underappreciated matriarch whose family forgets her during a Christmas outing. She disappears, and the family must scramble to deal with the consequences. Amazon’s official fall announcement scheduled the film for Prime Video on December 3, 2025.
A Very Jonas Christmas Movie: an airport-to-homecoming story
Disney announced Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas facing escalating obstacles while trying to travel from London to New York in time to spend Christmas with their families. Disney identified Jessica Yu as director and Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger among the writers and producers. Later Disney and Hulu holiday materials listed the film on Disney+ and Hulu.

Joy to the World: a manufactured country-home Christmas
Disney and Hulu describe lifestyle guru Joy Edwards, played by Emmanuelle Chriqui, asking her friend Max, played by Chad Michael Murray, to pose as her husband when a television network wants to film Christmas dinner at her fabricated country home. The holiday announcement establishes the programming placement; it does not provide a date that should be treated as a current availability guarantee.
Prep & Landing: The Snowball Protocol: animated elf trouble
Returning Christmas elves Lanny and Wayne get into trouble after their holiday missions go awry. Disney’s and Hulu’s seasonal announcements positioned it as a new family-animation option, separate from the live-action comedies and dramas in the slate.

Theatrical December releases: holiday themes and seasonal timing are different
The Associated Press calendar combines explicitly Christmas-themed films with movies that simply opened during December. That distinction helps set expectations:
- Silent Night, Deadly Night: a Christmas-themed slasher remake for horror viewers.
- Goodbye June: a family drama set before Christmas, opening in theaters before a later December Netflix date.
- The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants: an animated theatrical release whose December timing does not make it a Christmas story.
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 2: a theatrical genre release for established horror fans.
- Troll 2: a Netflix title on the AP December calendar, useful for at-home fantasy viewing rather than a traditional holiday narrative.
How to choose a 2025 holiday movie
Choose by release route
- Want a planned streaming premiere? Start with the Prime Video, Disney+ or Hulu selections, while recognizing that the dates describe 2025 schedules.
- Want a cinema outing? Look at the AP theatrical group, especially Silent Night, Deadly Night, Goodbye June or The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
- Want a later home option? Goodbye June was specifically reported with a theatrical opening and a later December Netflix date.
Choose by mood and audience
- Real-life seasonal storytelling: The Merchants of Joy.

Where to check before watching
For a current watch list, verify each title directly in the relevant regional catalog and check whether a subscription, bundle or separate rental is required. Hulu’s holiday announcement specifically described Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the United States; that condition should not be generalized to every country or plan. Theatrical listings also need a local cinema check, since showtimes and runs end.
