A curated, cross-generational list of 20 children’s cartoons, judged by storytelling, craft, staying power, cultural influence, and audience fit—not by popularity alone.

There is no objective, settled ranking of the greatest children’s cartoons. This list treats “greatest” as an editorial judgment: shows earn a place through staying power, distinctive storytelling and craft, cultural reach, and the range of ways they serve young audiences—from comedy and adventure to learning. The sequence is a curated selection, not a claim that one show is measurably better than the next.

The boundary here is children’s animation: preschool and school-age series, including educational shows and anime made for young viewers. Adult-targeted animation and family shows not principally made for children are excluded. “Greatest” also does not mean most watched or most educational; those are different questions.

How to read this list

Comparative rankings use different methods and cover different kinds of programs. The Guardian’s 2023 children’s-TV list was selected by arts writers and organized by age band, while Rotten Tomatoes’ animated-series ranking draws on critic-review data, other lists, and editorial judgment—and includes adult-oriented shows. Neither is a definitive kids-only canon. Rotten Tomatoes writer Whitney Friedlander described that ranking’s approach as considering Tomatometer data, reputable “best of” lists, and editorial discretion. Rotten Tomatoes

For a children’s-cartoon list, age and purpose matter alongside legacy: a preschool learning series and an adventure cartoon are not trying to do the same thing. PBS KIDS’ catalog, for example, includes educational and social-emotional programming as well as entertainment. Its stated mission is to support learning; that mission should not be mistaken for proof that every program produces a measured educational outcome. PBS KIDS show directory

20 greatest kids’ cartoon shows

1. Bluey

A contemporary family comedy built around imaginative play and the everyday negotiations of childhood. Bluey represents the streaming-era end of the list: a show whose appeal reaches beyond its youngest viewers without relying on action spectacle.

2. Sesame Street

A landmark of children’s educational television, combining animation, puppetry, songs, and short comedy segments. Its mixed-media form makes it a useful reminder that children’s animation has often worked as part of a broader learning program rather than as a standalone narrative series.

3. Arthur

Arthur turns school, family, and friendship problems into accessible stories for elementary-age viewers. Its lasting strength is the ordinary scale of its conflicts: misunderstandings and social challenges are treated as worth talking through.

4. The Simpsons (early seasons)

Although the series became an adult-targeted institution, its early family-centered animation and broad humor made it a major point of reference for television cartoons. Its inclusion is limited to its cultural influence on animation, not a recommendation that every episode suits children.

5. SpongeBob SquarePants

Fast visual gags, elastic character acting, and surreal humor give this undersea comedy a style that is immediately recognizable. Its highly exaggerated world is a strong example of how animation can push comic timing and physical behavior beyond live-action limits.

6. Pokémon

Pokémon brought a quest structure, a large cast of creatures, and themes of friendship and perseverance to children’s adventure animation. Its global cultural reach extends well beyond the television series, though the list recognizes the show itself rather than the franchise as a whole.

7. Avatar: The Last Airbender

This adventure series balances episodic humor with a sustained story, a carefully defined world, and a young ensemble whose relationships change over time. It is a strong choice for viewers ready for longer arcs and more serious conflict than a short-form comedy typically offers.

8. The Powerpuff Girls

Superhero action, bright graphic design, and comic send-ups of villainy make this an especially distinctive children’s cartoon. The combination of preschool-sized protagonists and city-scale threats gives its visual comedy a clear identity.

9. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

The original Scooby-Doo formula—friends, a mystery, a spooky setting, and a comic reveal—proved simple enough to revisit across generations. Its episodic structure makes it easy to sample without needing to follow a continuous story.

10. Recess

Recess treats the school playground as a social world with its own rules, alliances, and rituals. Disney’s D23 records that the series debuted on ABC’s One Saturday Morning on September 13, 1997, and ran for 65 episodes. D23: Recess

Rank #3

11. Dora the Explorer

Dora makes participation part of the format, inviting young viewers to follow clues and respond to prompts. That direct address distinguishes it from cartoons that ask children mainly to watch a story unfold.

12. The Electric Company

Designed around literacy for elementary-school children, The Electric Company used comedy and performance to make words and reading skills part of its entertainment. Sesame Workshop describes it as literacy-oriented programming for that age group. Sesame Workshop: The Electric Company

13. Dragon Tales

Dragon Tales paired a gentle fantasy setting with the emotional and social experiences of young children. Sesame Workshop identifies it as one of the first shows to premiere on PBS Kids in 1999. Sesame Workshop: Dragon Tales

14. Curious George

Curiosity drives this preschool series: George explores, makes mistakes, and learns through the consequences of his experiments. It belongs among the greats for making observation and problem-solving feel like play rather than a lecture.

15. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Built for young children, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood gives everyday feelings and social situations a clear place in the story. Its preschool focus is a different kind of achievement from a big adventure arc: helping children recognize and name familiar experiences.

16. Clangers

This stop-motion series stands apart from dialogue-heavy cartoons through its handcrafted look and quiet, imaginative storytelling. The Guardian included it among its panel-selected children’s television picks, illustrating how broad a children’s-TV canon can be across eras and techniques. 17. Cyberchase

Cyberchase folds mathematical challenges into a science-fiction adventure. Its premise gives problem-solving a visible role in the plot, distinguishing it from educational series that keep instruction separate from the story.

18. Dinosaur Train

Dinosaur Train combines a child-friendly adventure premise with an interest in dinosaurs and the natural world. It is one of the examples featured in the Guardian’s age-banded selection of children’s television. The Guardian: The 50 greatest kids’ TV shows ever

19. The Loud House

A large sibling ensemble gives The Loud House a steady supply of family comedy, contrasting personalities, and everyday household conflicts. The Guardian’s 2023 list also recognized it among its children’s-TV selections. The Guardian: The 50 greatest kids’ TV shows ever

20. Molly of Denali

Molly of Denali broadens the usual cartoon setting with stories rooted in Alaska and a contemporary Indigenous family. Its presence alongside preschool, comedy, and adventure series reflects the range a children’s canon should make room for.

What makes a kids’ cartoon last?

Lasting value is not the same as a large vote count or a universally agreed verdict. Ranker describes its children’s-cartoon ranking as user-voted and showed over 40.5K voters in a 2026 access snapshot; that figure reflects participation on a dynamic platform, not a representative survey or an objective measure of quality. Ranker: Best animated shows geared for an audience of children

A more useful way to compare shows is to ask what each does well: whether it still welcomes new viewers, whether its characters and craft remain memorable, and whether its format suits its intended age and purpose. Some entries are designed to prompt learning; others build a world, make children laugh, or invite them into a long-form story. No single ranking method can collapse those different aims into an objective score.
