What happened to Devan Duniver, and why was Harris convicted?
ABC reports that five-year-old Devan Duniver disappeared from her New Philadelphia, Ohio, neighborhood on June 27, 1998. Her body was found in a wooded area behind her home. Harris, her 12-year-old neighbor, confessed and was convicted in juvenile court. ABC reports that Harris and his lawyers maintained his innocence. The juvenile case was decided by a judge, not a jury; ABC’s 2024 report identifies the judge as Linda Kate.

Why was Anthony Harris’s conviction overturned?
ABC reports that on June 7, 2000, the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, determining that Harris’s confession had been coerced. Harris was released the following day, according to ABC. That appellate ruling overturned his conviction; it did not identify who killed Duniver or resolve the homicide.
Was Devan Duniver’s killing solved?
ABC’s August 23, 2024 report says the killing remained unsolved. The report says special prosecutor Richard Dobbins, appointed in 2005, spent two years investigating and concluded there was insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone. This describes the status reported by ABC in August 2024; the sources cited here do not establish whether the case status has changed since then.
