Spoilers ahead for “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” including sexual assault and violence. In Season 2, Episode 5 of 1923, Alex and Spencer each move closer to Montana, but neither gets an easy passage home. The episode’s parallel journeys build tension, while the continuing pursuit of Teonna and a grim turn in Donald Whitfield’s story broaden the danger beyond the couple.
Does Episode 5 bring Alex and Spencer closer to Montana?
“Only Gunshots to Guide Us” aired March 23, 2025. Paramount+ lists it as Season 2, Episode 5, and Rotten Tomatoes lists it as TV-MA. Paramount+’s episode page identifies the installment; Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing gives the date, rating and streaming information.
Yes, in the sense that both are traveling west; no, in the sense that the episode offers a clean reunion or a safe route. Alex’s train connection is blocked by weather, while Spencer is identified and warned of the peril waiting for him. Their separate progress is the episode’s clearest through-line, but each step forward arrives with another obstacle attached.
How does Alex’s journey change?
Alex works aboard a train in exchange for food, then is assaulted by a passenger. She fights back and is detained, but Paul and Hillary support her account and help secure her release. Her onward connection is canceled because a snowdrift blocks the route, so the couple offer her a place to rest in Winnetka.

The sequence gives Alex agency without pretending that defending herself erases the cost of what happened. Her immediate danger passes, but the interruption leaves her stranded short of Montana once again. Paul and Hillary’s help creates a brief pocket of safety rather than a solution to the larger journey. The assault is severe material; the episode’s TV-MA classification and this scene make the content warning more than a formality.
What happens to Spencer?
In Texas, Marshal Mamie Fossett stops Spencer after he says he is headed to Montana. Sheriff William McDowell verifies his identity, and Spencer receives news through the call that reinforces his determination to return. Mamie gives him a train ticket, moving him onward while making clear that his return will not be uncomplicated.

The contrast with Alex is effective: she is delayed by the physical conditions of travel, while Spencer is pulled into the official machinery of the law. Both get help, but neither gets a straightforward passage. The parallel structure keeps their shared destination in view even as the episode holds them apart.
Why does the episode split its attention?
Alex and Spencer are not the only travelers facing danger. Father Renaud and Marshal Kent continue after Teonna, Pete Plenty Clouds and Runs His Horse. When Pete separates from the group to find water, the pursuers catch up; his horse falls, leaving him exposed as he takes up his rifle. Gunfire begins, but the episode withholds the immediate outcome.

That cliffhanger is the episode’s sharpest piece of suspense, though it also postpones resolution at the moment the pursuit reaches its most urgent point. The cut between the couple’s obstructed journeys and Pete’s confrontation makes the episode feel deliberately divided: every storyline advances, but none reaches a secure destination.
Whitfield’s storyline adds a different kind of threat. After his abuse kills Christy, Banner and his associates dispose of her body, while Lindy recruits another sex worker for Whitfield. The women’s suffering is not just an atmospheric sign of his cruelty; it reveals the machinery that allows him to continue harming people. Still, these events extend an already bleak episode’s catalogue of violence, and their placement competes with the journeys promised by the title.
Does the Yellowstone “train station” reveal work?
The episode supplies an origin for the “train station” associated with Yellowstone: TV Insider’s recap attributes its creation to Whitfield’s “no man’s land” scheme in Wyoming, rather than to a Dutton ancestor. The connection gives the prequel’s franchise lore a concrete link to the present-day series.

It is an intriguing piece of world-building, but lore is not the same as payoff. The explanation enriches the setting while the episode leaves Pete’s fate unresolved and keeps the endangered ranch outside the center of its action. The result is a useful reveal embedded in an installment whose emotional momentum depends more on characters trying to reach safety than on the history lesson itself.
Is “Only Gunshots to Guide Us” a satisfying episode?
Its strongest choice is to make forward motion feel costly. Alex and Spencer each make progress, but the obstacles are distinct enough to keep their stories from simply repeating one another. The Teonna pursuit supplies an immediate cliffhanger, and the train-station origin adds a franchise connection for viewers following Yellowstone.

The trade-off is breadth. The episode moves among the couple, Teonna’s pursuers and Whitfield’s abuse, leaving little room for any one strand to settle. Its severe material may feel purposeful to viewers who find the accumulating danger compelling; to others, the succession of threats can register as misery without enough relief. The ending intensifies that divide: Pete’s confrontation is gripping, but its unresolved gunfire postpones the payoff the episode has spent building.
Visible critic reactions are mixed rather than conclusive: Rotten Tomatoes lists four reviews, including a 3/5 from Amanda Whiting of New York Magazine/Vulture, a 2/5 from Carissa Pavlica of TV Fanatic, and 8/10 scores from M.N. Miller of FandomWire and Jamie Parker of CBR. Their differing emphasis reflects the episode’s central tension—big, forceful developments on several fronts, but a divided focus and a cliffhanger instead of resolution.
