Winter leaves the Dutton ranch exposed
“The Killing Season” opens on a bleak Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. In a letter to Spencer, Cara describes the loss of most of the herd and the difficulty of traveling before spring. She and Jacob are trying to preserve what remains while waiting for Spencer to return.
The ranch’s troubles are not only physical. Jacob plans to go to town for a hearing involving Zane and his wife, Alice. He and Sheriff McDowell see the charges as part of Donald Whitfield’s campaign against the Duttons. Taxes, legal pressure and the estate’s fragile finances make the winter more dangerous: the family has fewer resources with which to resist Whitfield’s pursuit of the ranch and Dutton legacy.
A quiet exchange between Jacob and Cara about getting a telephone briefly softens the mood before Jacob leaves. It also sharpens the contrast between their private life and the mounting threats outside it.

Teonna is still being hunted
Father Renaud and his party continue searching for Teonna. Their pursuit reaches a Comanche village, where the searchers attack people and injure a child. Teonna herself is traveling with her father, Runs His Horse, and Pete. She and Pete begin a romantic relationship, but the journey offers no guarantee of safety while Renaud’s party remains on their trail.
Her flight is not simply a matter of evading pursuers: it follows the abuse and coercion she endured at the boarding school. The danger in this episode comes from a larger effort to control and capture her, not just from the immediate threat of a chase.

Spencer finds a way to move closer to Montana
Spencer is still far from home, working in the engine room of a merchant ship. When a sailor assaults Luca, Spencer intervenes. The captain kills the sailor, and Luca is left shaken. Spencer later talks him away from suicide, telling him, “People aren’t defined by what happens to them,” and, “They’re defined by what they do,” according to TVLine’s recap.
Luca suggests Spencer fight sailors for money. Spencer takes the opportunity, earning $420 in the episode’s shipboard fights. The money gives him a possible way to advance his journey, but he is still separated from the ranch and Cara’s winter struggle.

Alexandra stops waiting and plans her own journey
In England, Alexandra is depressed and separated from Spencer. She tells her friend Jennifer that she is pregnant, then starts arranging passage to America. Her plan is to continue by train toward Montana. Rather than remain in place waiting for Spencer, she begins moving toward him on her own.
A mountain lion brings the ranch danger home
Earlier, Jacob encounters a mountain lion near the house but does not kill it. Later, it returns while Elizabeth is outside. Cara sees the danger through the window and shoots the animal to protect her. Then she hears more predators nearby. The closing threat is immediate and physical, extending the Duttons’ precarious winter beyond the legal and financial pressure Whitfield is applying.
