However, “read manga online free” does not usually mean every chapter of every series is free forever. Publisher licensing, temporary promotions, tickets, advertising, subscriptions, library catalogs, and regional restrictions all affect what you can actually read.
This guide separates genuinely free access from free previews and paid libraries. It also identifies five frequently listed services whose current status could not be verified in this research pass, rather than presenting outdated information as fact. The pages and help documents were checked on August 7, 2026; availability and pricing can change.

Quick comparison: the best manga sites by use case
| Site | Best for | What is confirmed free | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA | Current Shueisha series and official simultaneous releases | Free access exists, including selected chapters and eligible app reads | Catalog, chapter availability, tickets, subscriptions, and region restrictions apply |
| VIZ Shonen Jump | Shonen Jump series | Latest free chapters, with title-specific limits | The 20,000+ chapter vault is a subscriber benefit, not entirely free |
| VIZ Manga | VIZ’s broader manga catalog | A separate “Latest free chapters” section | The advertised 10,000+ chapter library is not all free |
| K MANGA | Kodansha titles and update tracking | Free access rules were not established by the checked page | Use the title page to check its current access and update terms |
| Manga UP! | Square Enix-associated catalog discovery and serialized titles | The checked page did not establish a universal free rule | Look for the access label on each title or chapter |
| MangaPlaza | Large genre-diverse catalog | First chapters of more titles free after registration, plus “Now Free” items | Many catalog entries use paid or premium access |
| Mangamo | Subscription reading and rotating free chapters | Free chapters on most series; many Plus titles offer one Daily Free Chapter every 24 hours | Mangamo Plus is listed at US$4.99 monthly in the checked support article, with regional variation |
| WEBTOON | Webcomics, manhwa, and vertical-format series | Access rules vary by series and feature | It is broader than Japanese manga; check episode labels and release terms |
| Tapas | Independent comics, webcomics, and novels | Ad-unlocked, timed-unlock, event, and promotional access appears on the current site | There is no single free-access rule for the whole catalog |
| hoopla | Reading through a public library | Comics and manga are available at no additional charge to eligible library users | A library card and participating library are required; catalogs vary |
| GlobalComix | Manga alongside Western comics and indie titles | A “Free” filter and some free items | “Free with Gold” means included with membership, not necessarily free to everyone |
| BOOK☆WALKER Global | Buying and managing official digital books | A dedicated “Free Reads” section | It is primarily a storefront, not an all-you-can-read free service |
The remaining five names often appear on similar lists, but their current prices, catalogs, free-reading rules, regional availability, or licensing status were not verifiable from the research available for this article: Comikey, Omoi, MangaDex, INKR, and Libby. They are covered separately below so that readers do not mistake an old recommendation for a current, checked one.
1. MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA
MANGA Plus is the strongest first stop for readers who want current Shueisha manga through an official service. MANGA Plus describes itself as both official and “completely free,” with revenue passed to artists. Its limitation is scope: it covers comics published by Shueisha, not manga from every Japanese publisher.

- Care instruction: Keep away from fire
- It can be used as a gift
To browse beyond the homepage, open MANGA LIST > ALL. A title or chapter missing from search may reflect regional licensing rather than a technical problem. Availability varies by location.
How its free access actually works
- Selected opening and latest chapters may be available free, but the service does not promise every chapter indefinitely.
- In the app, First Read Free is automatically available after first installation. Eligible ongoing chapters can be read once at no charge. The free read ends when the chapter viewer is closed; reading it again generally requires a subscription.
- First Read Free does not cover re-editions or completed series, and some chapters require tickets. A chapter may look as if its ticket has already been used if it was read previously.
- For some completed works, the latest three or six chapters may be removed 30 days after the final chapter, with exceptions for certain titles.
Release timing is also useful for following ongoing series. MANGA Plus generally publishes Weekly Shonen Jump chapters at 5:00 a.m. Japan Time and other comics at 12:00 a.m. Japan Time, although schedules can change. The title detail page shows the next scheduled update.
Useful app controls
Change reading direction through SETTINGS > READING DIRECTION. The app offers horizontal, leftward scrolling and vertical, downward scrolling; horizontal mode is unavailable for some comics. You can use FAVORITE from a comic’s detail page or the last page of a chapter. Comments are app-only and limited to two comments per day per chapter.
MANGA Plus does not require member registration, but that convenience has a drawback: reading data cannot be transferred to a new phone. If you switch devices, do not assume your reading history will follow you.
2. VIZ Shonen Jump
VIZ Shonen Jump is the most relevant VIZ destination for Shonen Jump titles. Its current page is labeled “VIZ | Read Free Shonen Jump Manga” and includes a “Latest free chapters” section. Free access is title-specific and temporary. For example, the checked page displayed Bleach chapters 675–686 as free for a limited time; that promotion should not be treated as permanent.
VIZ also advertises a 20,000+ chapter digital vault for subscribers. That is a major catalog, but it is not an entirely free vault. The page distinguishes the paid subscription library from the latest free chapters.
Account controls currently include Sign up, Log in, Forgot password?, and Remember me. The newsletter offers a Subscribe button with interest choices for Anime, Manga, Shonen Jump Chapters, and VIZ Manga Chapters. For a specific series, check the chapter page rather than assuming that every back issue is free.
3. VIZ Manga
VIZ Manga is VIZ’s broader digital manga service, separate from the Shonen Jump page. It currently advertises a 10,000+ chapter digital library and separately labels “Latest free chapters.” Those two labels are important: the free section is not the same thing as unrestricted access to the full library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use See all > to browse the catalog. The site exposes Log in, Sign up, Forgot password?, and Subscribe to VIZ Manga! controls. VIZ Manga is a good place to check for an officially released title, but confirm whether the chapter is marked free, requires a subscription, or is sold individually.
4. K MANGA
K MANGA identifies itself as Kodansha’s official manga website. It is the natural publisher-specific destination for Kodansha readers, particularly those who want to follow scheduled releases and discover titles through rankings.
The current header includes Log in/Create Account, a Search by title/author field, and a search button. The homepage has a Ranking section and title-specific update schedules such as Every Sunday and Every Tuesday.
Rank #2
- Comes with secure packaging
- Easy to read text
- This product will be an excellent pick for you
The checked page did not establish one universal free-reading policy for every K MANGA title. Treat it as an official catalog and release-tracking option, then inspect the individual series or chapter for its current free, ticket, or paid-access label.
5. Manga UP!
Manga UP! is a global manga site with a current navigation bar containing Home, Search, News, My Page, and Sign in. Its catalog uses labels such as ORIGINAL UP, ORIGINAL, NEW, and UP.
The checked catalog displayed titles including My Dress-Up Darling, The Apothecary Diaries, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, and The Grace of the Gods. Because the page does not establish a single free rule for all series, use the title-level access information before planning a complete read-through.
6. MangaPlaza
MangaPlaza is useful for readers who want a large, genre-diverse catalog rather than only mainstream battle manga. The site currently advertises over 170,000 chapters and says that users can sign up to read the first chapter of even more titles for free.
Registration is part of the access model. The site exposes Register For Free! and Log In, and may display “Sorry! You need an account to do that!” when an action requires an account. Its catalog labels include New, Best Sellers, SALE, Coupon, and Now Free.
Finding something specific
Use Find Titles, Search by Keyword, or Search Menu. The menu supports Search by Genre, Explore Premium, Search by Author, and Special Collections. Genres currently include Romance, MP Originals, Action, BL, Adult Romance, Yuri, Fantasy, Drama, Horror, Harlequin, and Light Novels.
MangaPlaza’s free offer is therefore best understood as free first chapters and selected Now Free promotions, not a claim that the entire 170,000-plus chapter catalog is free.
7. Mangamo
Mangamo does offer free manga; it is not subscription-only. Most series provide some free chapters without requiring sign-up. The amount varies by series, from only the first chapter to more than half of a series.
Many Plus titles use Daily Free Chapters: one free chapter per series every 24 hours. This makes Mangamo particularly useful for readers who are happy to read gradually rather than finish a long series in one sitting.

The plan includes unlimited access to 200-plus manga titles, 50-plus Only On Mangamo exclusive titles, thousands of additional chapters, new chapters daily, and no ads. Confirm the price shown in your region before subscribing.
8. WEBTOON
WEBTOON is better described as a webcomics and manhwa platform than as a traditional manga archive, but it belongs on a broad manga-reading list because it carries comics, manga, and manhwa in a mobile-friendly format. The English site identifies itself as “WEBTOON – Read Comics, Manga & Manhwa.”
Rank #3
Current controls include MENU, WEBTOON SHOP, Creators 101, DASHBOARD, Log In, and Search series or creators. Browse using Trending or Popular, or filter categories such as Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Action, Slice of life, Romance, Superhero, and Sci-fi.
Because WEBTOON’s access features can differ by series and episode, check the labels on the specific title. It should not be treated as a site where every episode is necessarily free without limits.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
9. Tapas
Tapas combines comics and novels, including independent and creator-published work. Its current navigation includes Home, Comics, Novels, Community, Mature, Search, Login, and Publish.
Tapas does not use one universal free-access rule. The current homepage advertises a Watch Ad library, including 19 new comics, and displays access labels such as UP, 3hr, and EVENT. In practical terms, a title may use ad unlocks, timed unlocks, event access, or a promotion. Check the series page for the actual wait period or unlock requirement before starting.
10. hoopla
hoopla is one of the best genuinely no-additional-cost options if you have access to a participating public library. It requires a library card and provides comics alongside eBooks, audiobooks, movies, television, magazines, and music.
Choose Log In or GET STARTED, then search the catalog available through your library. Titles can be streamed immediately, and most can be downloaded to a phone or tablet. The crucial limitation is that hoopla does not have one identical catalog for everyone: available manga depends on the participating library’s collection.
If a series does not appear, that does not necessarily mean hoopla lacks it everywhere. Try searching your library’s catalog directly, or ask the library whether it supports hoopla and which digital lending titles it provides.
11. GlobalComix
GlobalComix mixes manga with Western comics, webcomics, indie work, and crowdfunding projects. Its navigation includes Home, Explore, Watch, News, Chat, and Pulse. Registration is presented as Sign up – it’s free, alongside Log in.
Use the catalog filters All, New, Deals, Comics, Crowdfunding, Manga, Webcomics, and Free. Current channels include Kodansha, Indie Manga, Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse, among others.
Read the wording carefully: many homepage items are marked Free with Gold. That generally means included in the Gold membership tier, not necessarily available to every visitor at no cost. Use the Free filter and confirm the title’s access label before assuming it is unrestricted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches12. BOOK☆WALKER Global
BOOK☆WALKER Global is primarily a digital storefront for buying and reading manga, webtoons, novels, and audiobooks. Its top-level categories are All, Manga, Webtoons, Novels, and Audiobooks.
Rank #4
There is a dedicated Free Reads section with a View All control, so it can provide legitimate no-cost reading opportunities. That section is not evidence that the whole store is free. Other current labels include Coin Back and Pre-order Now, which indicate purchase, reward, or upcoming-release features.
Choose BOOK☆WALKER when you want a reliable digital storefront and are willing to buy chapters or volumes when the free section does not include the title—not when you are looking for an unlimited free subscription.
Five frequently listed sites whose current status needs checking
These five services were named in the requested 17-site topic, but the research pass did not produce verifiable current page content for their prices, free-chapter policies, catalogs, geographic availability, or legal status. They should not be presented with inherited claims from older listicles.
Recommended Free Tools
13. Comikey
Comikey is a commonly mentioned name in manga-site roundups, but its current free-access model and catalog were not verified for this article. Check the live service before relying on any claim about free chapters, tickets, subscriptions, or regional availability.
14. Omoi
Omoi is also frequently included in current manga recommendations, but this research did not verify its present catalog, pricing, free-reading rules, or availability. Treat older descriptions as potentially stale.
15. MangaDex
MangaDex should not be labeled universally official, legal, or safe without checking individual titles and current rights information. It is commonly described as a community translation database or aggregator, with content often uploaded by scanlation groups; that general description does not establish the licensing status of every work. A commonly cited overview is available from Wikipedia, but title-level verification is still necessary.
If your priority is supporting creators and using clearly publisher-backed sources, start with MANGA Plus, VIZ, K MANGA, a library service, or another service that identifies its rights and access model for the specific title.
16. INKR
INKR was not sufficiently verifiable in the current research pass. Do not rely on older claims about its free chapters, subscription, catalog size, supported countries, or licensing until its live site confirms them.
17. Libby
Libby is commonly recommended alongside library-based reading apps, but its current manga catalog and access rules were not verified here. Availability generally needs to be checked through the reader’s own library, and no universal catalog or current title list should be assumed from an old article.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right site
- Start with the publisher. If the manga is from Shueisha, check MANGA Plus. For VIZ titles, check VIZ Shonen Jump or VIZ Manga. For Kodansha titles, check K MANGA. Publisher-specific services are usually the fastest way to find current chapters and accurate release information.
- Check the exact chapter, not just the site name. “Free chapters,” “First Read Free,” “Daily Free Chapter,” “Free with Gold,” “Now Free,” “Free Reads,” and “vault access” describe different products. A free first chapter does not imply a free complete series.
- Use a library card before paying. Search hoopla if your public library participates. The title may be available for streaming or download even when it is not free on a commercial platform.
- Use the correct format. WEBTOON and Tapas are particularly useful for vertical webcomics and creator-published series. BOOK☆WALKER is primarily a storefront. GlobalComix spans manga, Western comics, and indie publishing.
- Account for location. Licensing can make a title, chapter, or entire service unavailable in one country but visible in another. MANGA Plus explicitly identifies location-based availability, and Mangamo notes that subscription pricing can vary by region.
- Prefer clear rights information. A site being easy to access does not by itself prove that every uploaded translation is authorized. This is especially important for community-uploaded or aggregator services.
What “free manga” can mean
- Free preview
- Usually the first chapter or a selected opening sample. MangaPlaza currently uses this model for more titles after registration.
- Latest free chapters
- A publisher may temporarily unlock selected new or promotional chapters, as VIZ currently does. The selection can change.
- First Read Free
- MANGA Plus’s app feature lets eligible ongoing chapters be read once for free; closing the viewer ends that free read.
- Daily or timed unlock
- Mangamo’s Daily Free Chapters provide one chapter per series every 24 hours on many Plus titles. Tapas displays timed labels such as 3hr on some content.
- Ad-supported access
- Tapas currently promotes a Watch Ad library. An ad unlock is not the same as unrestricted access.
- Library lending
- hoopla provides access through a participating public library and library card. The reader does not receive a universal, permanent copy of every title.
- Membership-included access
- GlobalComix’s “Free with Gold” items are included with Gold and should not automatically be counted as free to nonmembers. Mangamo Plus similarly provides subscription access.
- Free storefront section
- BOOK☆WALKER’s Free Reads area contains no-cost titles, while the broader service remains a digital store.
Common problems and what to do
A manga is missing from the search results
First check whether the publisher has rights in your location. On MANGA Plus, regional licensing is an explicit explanation for missing titles or chapters. Then search the publisher’s other official service, your library catalog, or a storefront. Do not assume the site is broken or that an unofficial upload is authorized.
A chapter was free yesterday but is locked today
Promotional and latest-free selections are temporary. VIZ labels its section “Latest free chapters,” and MangaPlaza uses changing labels such as SALE, Coupon, and Now Free. Check the title page for the current terms rather than relying on a cached list.
Best Value
- Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn't got an ounce of power in him
- What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested superpowers called “Quirks”
- Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Being a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study
MANGA Plus says a ticket was used
The app’s First Read Free system is limited. A previously read chapter may appear as if its ticket has already been used, and some chapters are excluded because they are re-editions, completed-series chapters, or ticket-required content. If you need repeat access, review the app’s subscription or ticket options.
Your reading history disappeared after changing phones
MANGA Plus does not require registration, but its FAQ says reading data cannot be transferred to a new phone. This is a service limitation, not necessarily an account error.
hoopla does not show the same books someone else recommended
hoopla catalogs vary by participating library. Confirm that your library supports the service and search within that library’s available collection.
GlobalComix says a title is “Free with Gold”
Read the label literally: it may be free as part of Gold rather than free without membership. Use the site’s Free filter and inspect the title’s access details.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Bottom line
For the clearest free starting point, try MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA for Shueisha titles, VIZ for its currently unlocked chapters, and hoopla if you have a participating library card. Mangamo is the most flexible option for free chapters plus a relatively low-cost subscription. MangaPlaza, Tapas, GlobalComix, and BOOK☆WALKER can all provide free reading, but each uses a different preview, promotion, ad, membership, or storefront model. No responsible 2026 list should promise that every manga chapter is free forever, and five frequently named services in older lists require a fresh live check before their current terms can be stated confidently.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best completely free manga site?
There is no single site with every manga free indefinitely. MANGA Plus is the best official starting point for Shueisha titles, but it uses selected chapters, First Read Free, tickets, subscriptions, regional licensing, and occasional chapter removals. hoopla can be free at the point of use if your participating library carries the title.
Can I read every chapter of every Shueisha manga free on MANGA Plus?
No. MANGA Plus offers selected opening and latest chapters, and its app has limited First Read Free access for eligible ongoing chapters. Some chapters require tickets or a subscription, availability varies by location, and certain completed-series chapters may later be removed.
Are VIZ Shonen Jump’s 20,000-plus chapters free?
No. VIZ distinguishes its temporary “Latest free chapters” from the 20,000-plus chapter digital vault advertised for subscribers. Check the access label for the individual series or chapter.
Is MangaDex universally legal or official?
No such blanket claim should be made. MangaDex is commonly described as a community translation database or aggregator, but the licensing status can differ by title and upload. Verify rights at the title level and prefer publisher-backed services when that matters.
Can a library card really provide free manga online?
Yes, through services such as hoopla when your public library participates and has the title in its catalog. hoopla requires a library card, and its available collection varies by library.
The Bottom Line
Best first choices: MANGA Plus for Shueisha, VIZ for its unlocked chapters, Mangamo for free chapters and subscription access, and hoopla through a participating library. Always check the individual title’s current access label: “free” may mean a preview, a temporary promotion, an ad unlock, a daily chapter, a membership benefit, or library lending—not unlimited access to the whole series.
