15 Things That Might Have Happened If Princess Diana Had Lived

Diana’s stated wish for more privacy, her surviving patronages and her 1997 landmine campaign offer clues—but no source can tell us what she would have done next.

No one can know what Princess Diana’s life would have been like if she had lived. The best clues are what she had already said and done: she wanted a meaningful public role with more privacy, remained connected to several charities after her divorce, and campaigned against landmines in 1997. The possibilities below range from those documented priorities to speculation about relationships, the monarchy and her later public image.

What is documented about Diana’s plans?

Diana died on 31 August 1997, aged 36. The Royal Family’s official biography records that in December 1993 she announced an intention to reduce her public life, seeking “a meaningful public role with a more private life.” After her divorce, she resigned most of her charity and other patronages but retained several, including Centrepoint, English National Ballet, the Leprosy Mission, the National AIDS Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital. In 1997, she also made landmine awareness a prominent cause, visiting Angola, promoting the campaign in the United States and visiting projects in Bosnia. The Royal Family’s official biography documents these activities, but none can establish what she would have done next.

15 possibilities—not predictions

1. She might have kept a smaller public role

Her stated wish to combine public work with greater privacy makes a reduced but meaningful role a plausible possibility. That was an expressed aim, not a settled schedule for the years ahead.

2. Landmine advocacy could have remained central

Her 1997 visits and campaigning suggest the cause might have continued to define part of her public work. There is no evidence establishing how long she would have remained involved or what form that involvement would have taken.

3. She might have travelled more

A December 1997 Irish Times account of a Paris Match interview published after her death attributed this remark to Diana: “Maybe I’ll travel more so that people forget me a bit.” The same report attributed to her a countervailing concern that her sons needed her nearby. The quotation is reported through that interview account, not an independently accessible recording. The Irish Times report offers a glimpse of competing considerations, not a confirmed travel plan.

4. Her sons might have had more time with her as adults

William and Harry were young when Diana died. It is natural to imagine her relationship with them continuing as they grew older, but the available record cannot tell us what that relationship would have been like or how often they would have seen one another.

5. Their lives might have continued to shape her choices

The reported interview suggests Diana considered her sons when thinking about travel and where to live. Their later choices might have affected her public profile or priorities, but claims about her influence on their marriages, careers or decisions would be speculation.

6. She could have continued supporting charities she retained

Centrepoint, English National Ballet, the Leprosy Mission, the National AIDS Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital were among the patronages she kept after her divorce. She might have continued supporting some or all of them; the record does not show that she had committed to doing so indefinitely.

7. She might have built a more independent philanthropic role

Her charity work and 1997 landmine campaign make an independent focus on humanitarian causes conceivable. But the documented sources do not establish a plan to create a foundation or other new institution.

8. Her continued fame could have kept pressure on Charles and Camilla

A 2022 Independent essay speculated that Diana’s continued presence might have affected public attention around Charles and Camilla. That is a commentator’s interpretation, not evidence that she would have changed their relationship or marriage. The Independent’s counterfactual essay is useful as a set of possibilities, not as a historical account of events that never occurred.

9. Her views might have remained part of debate about the monarchy

Diana’s public position could have kept questions about the monarchy in the news. The Independent essay imagines continuing disagreement, but the cited material does not establish that she planned a campaign to reform the institution or specify what her views would have been later.

10. She might have written or authorized memoirs

The Independent essay raises the possibility of memoirs, perhaps with proceeds directed to charity. No source here establishes that Diana planned a particular book, or that she would have chosen to publish one.

11. She might have considered life outside Britain—but her sons mattered

The Independent essay considers whether Diana might have sought a life abroad. The Irish Times’s account of the Paris Match interview, however, attributed to her a denial that she planned to move away because her sons needed her nearby. These reported remarks complicate any claim that she had settled on exile or a permanent move.

12. Her relationship with Dodi might have continued—or ended

Evidence about a possible marriage is mixed in both content and provenance. ABC News Australia reported that Franz Klein, then president of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, told the inquest that Dodi had discussed buying an engagement ring and where he and his girlfriend would live after a wedding. That is evidence of what Klein said Dodi told him—not proof Diana had accepted a proposal. The Irish Times’s account of the posthumously published Paris Match interview attributed affectionate remarks to Diana and a wish for a “love marriage” to Dodi. Neither report establishes an engagement. ABC’s account of the inquest testimony and the Irish Times interview report describe different pieces of evidence, not a definite outcome.

13. A later partnership with Hasnat Khan or someone else is unknowable

Later romantic possibilities are speculation, not a basis for naming a future spouse. The cited sources do not establish whom Diana might have loved or partnered with in later life.

14. She might have remained a fashion figure

The Royal Family biography notes Diana’s profile with British designers, while the Independent essay imagines her continuing influence on fashion. Her style might have remained a public point of interest, but neither source can show how it would have evolved.

15. Her public image might have changed as she aged

Without the tragic ending at 36, the public might have come to see Diana differently over time—as a more private person, a campaigner, a mother, or some combination. Any claim about how she would have been remembered is conjecture rather than history.

What the record cannot settle

In 2006, the British police inquiry rejected conspiracy claims and claims that Diana was engaged or about to be engaged. The Guardian reported that former Metropolitan Police commissioner Lord Stevens described the deaths as “a tragic accident.” Those findings address the real events; they do not resolve a hypothetical future. The Guardian’s report on the inquiry is therefore relevant context for the marriage speculation, not evidence of what Diana would have chosen afterward.
