For most first-time visitors, Haulover Beach in Miami is the best all-round choice: its clothing-optional section is clearly identified, easy to reach, warm, social, and close to ordinary beach facilities. But the right beach depends on what “best” means to you. Wreck Beach is the scenic, rugged choice; Maspalomas is excellent for winter sun; Valalta and Cap d’Agde are full naturist resort experiences; and Little Beach in Maui comes with a much more serious legal caveat.
This is an editorial ranking, not an official global award. It weighs the clarity of local rules, scenery, sand and water, access, facilities, naturist culture, and usefulness for different travelers. “Nudist,” “naturist,” and “clothing-optional” are used carefully: they describe different kinds of experiences, and nudity is not automatically legal or expected everywhere on this list.
The 15 beaches at a glance
| Rank | Beach and location | What the rules or local guidance support | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Haulover Beach, Florida, United States | County-designated clothing-optional section | First-timers and easy access |
| 2 | Wreck Beach, British Columbia, Canada | Long-established clothing-optional beach | Scenery and community atmosphere |
| 3 | Gunnison Beach, New Jersey, United States | Traditional clothing-optional area with important National Park Service caveats | New York and New Jersey beach days |
| 4 | Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain | Officially described nudist sections within a protected dune setting | Winter sun and resort infrastructure |
| 5 | Meco Beach, Portugal | Authorized, signposted naturist area | Atlantic scenery near Lisbon |
| 6 | Maslin Beach, South Australia | Historic legal nude-bathing area | History, cliffs, and an Adelaide road trip |
| 7 | Lady Bay Beach, New South Wales, Australia | Designated nude-bathing area | Compact Sydney Harbour scenery |
| 8 | Point Impossible, Victoria, Australia | Legal optional-clothing area with prescribed boundaries | Space near Torquay and the Great Ocean Road |
| 9 | Valalta, Istria, Croatia | Resort-linked naturist beach and campsite | Organized, family-oriented resort facilities |
| 10 | Ada Bojana, Montenegro | Naturist settlement with beach and holiday facilities | A complete naturist vacation |
| 11 | Cap d’Agde Naturist Village, France | Controlled-access naturist village | A self-contained resort town |
| 12 | Plage des Grottes, Île du Levant, France | Naturism is compulsory on the public beach | Experienced naturists and island escapes |
| 13 | Filaki Beach, Crete, Greece | Naturist beach associated with Vritomartis resort | Organized facilities and resort support |
| 14 | Ses Illetes, Formentera, Spain | Naturism practiced or tolerated in appropriate, quieter stretches | Turquoise water and mixed beach culture |
| 15 | Little Beach, Maui, Hawaii, United States | Long-standing clothing-optional culture but legal uncertainty | Travelers willing to verify current enforcement |
The table’s wording matters. A designated or authorized area is not the same as a resort beach, and a beach where nudity is tolerated is not necessarily a beach where it is formally lawful. Always treat current signs, park notices, resort rules, and local instructions as more authoritative than an online list.
1. Haulover Beach, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States

Haulover is the clearest beginner-friendly choice on this list because Miami-Dade County designates a clothing-optional section at the northern end of Haulover Beach Park. Visitor information places it between lifeguard stands 12 and 15, with parking and beach services nearby. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Check the current visitor information before going rather than relying on an old map or word-of-mouth directions.
Its main advantage is low logistical friction. You can stay in Miami, reach the beach without a remote hike, and find the clothing-optional area without having to interpret a vague stretch of coastline. That makes it a sensible place for someone who is curious about naturism but does not want their first experience to involve a difficult climb, limited services, or a resort booking.
The boundary is the important part: clothing-optional does not mean the entire park is clothing-optional. Remain within the designated beach area, follow posted boundaries and lifeguard instructions, and cover up before walking away from it when local rules require that. Photography etiquette is especially important in a busy, social setting.
2. Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Best for: dramatic scenery, sunsets, a relaxed community atmosphere, and travelers who can manage a steep stair climb.
Recommended Free Tools
Below the University of British Columbia in Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Wreck Beach is a long-established clothing-optional beach with a very different character from Haulover. The setting feels expansive and natural, and the beach is free to access. The trade-off is the approach: UBC identifies Trail 6 as the access route and warns that the descent involves steep stairs. The return climb is the real physical test.
There are limited services, so plan as if you are visiting a relatively undeveloped beach. Bring water, food, sun protection, and a towel, and allow extra time for the climb back. Cold water, tides, and currents also deserve more attention here than they might at a warm resort beach. Wreck is a strong choice for people who value landscape and atmosphere over convenience.
3. Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, United States
Best for: a large beach day within reach of the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area.
Gunnison is a clothing-optional area within Gateway National Recreation Area, but it needs more careful description than many travel lists provide. The National Park Service describes Gunnison as popular for clothing-optional use, while also explaining that it is not formally designated in exactly the same way as a dedicated naturist resort or officially designated nude beach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStay within the traditional clothing-optional area. The NPS warns that nudity outside that area may be treated as disorderly conduct, so do not assume that the entire park or every beach at Sandy Hook has the same status. Gunnison also has no lifeguards. The park service directs swimmers who want lifeguard coverage to use lifeguarded beaches instead. That warning should shape your plans: a broad sandy shoreline is not the same thing as a supervised swimming beach.
4. Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain
Best for: winter sun, long walks, resort facilities, and travelers who want clothing-optional bathing without isolation.
Maspalomas combines a long beach, extensive accommodation, warm weather, and a well-known naturist culture. The official Gran Canaria tourism information identifies nudist sections between designated beach bars. That is a more useful description than calling the whole beach nude: Maspalomas is a shared coastal environment, and the appropriate section matters.
The dunes are not simply an extension of the beach for wandering, camping, or private recreation. Maspalomas is a protected dune environment, so use marked paths and avoid trampling vegetation or creating informal routes. The beach is particularly attractive to travelers who want a naturist option alongside hotels, restaurants, beach services, and easy holiday infrastructure—but it is not the place to ignore conservation rules because the landscape looks open.

5. Meco Beach, Sesimbra, Portugal
Best for: Atlantic scenery, a less resort-compound feel, and a naturist day trip from Lisbon.
Praia do Meco, also known as Moinho de Baixo Beach, has an authorized and signposted naturist area. VisitPortugal describes the recognized zone as running from Tramagueira Beach toward Rio da Prata. Portuguese naturist authorities also list Meco among the country’s official naturist beaches.
Meco is a good middle ground: it offers a recognized area without requiring the visitor to enter a large, purpose-built naturist village. It also fits naturally into a Lisbon and Setúbal-region itinerary. Because beach signage, access arrangements, and seasonal facilities can change, check the current signed section locally when you arrive. Do not assume that a familiar stretch of sand has the same status outside the recognized area.
6. Maslin Beach, South Australia
Best for: naturist history, striking cliffs, and an Adelaide-area road trip.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Maslin Beach is one of Australia’s landmark nude-friendly beaches. Tourism Australia includes Maslin among the country’s nude-friendly beaches. South Australian historical sources record its official recognition in 1975 as Australia’s first legal nude-bathing area, which gives the beach an importance beyond its scenery.
The cliffs create a dramatic setting, but they also make sensible access and sun planning important. Use designated routes rather than improvising a climb, carry water, and protect exposed skin with high-SPF sunscreen. The Australian sun can be punishing even when a sea breeze makes the temperature feel comfortable.
7. Lady Bay Beach, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Best for: a compact urban naturist experience with exceptional harbor scenery.
Lady Bay is a small beach between South Head and Camp Cove in Sydney Harbour National Park. The New South Wales Government describes it as a designated nude-bathing area. Visitors can combine the beach with the South Head Heritage Trail and harbor views, making it one of the easiest entries on the list to pair with a city visit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its small, enclosed character changes the etiquette calculation. There is less space to spread out than at Haulover, Gunnison, or Point Impossible, so be particularly careful about privacy. Do not photograph other bathers, even casually in the background, and avoid treating the beach as a sightseeing spectacle. The scenery is public; people’s bodies and conversations are not yours to document.
8. Point Impossible, Victoria, Australia
Best for: a spacious beach day near Torquay, Surf Coast towns, and the Great Ocean Road.
Point Impossible offers room to breathe and a prescribed legal framework. Surf Coast Shire publishes the boundaries of the optional-clothing area, describing roughly one kilometer of beach accessed from designated car parks. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority has also confirmed that the clothing-optional area remains in place and that signage was realigned to match the legal zone.
This is not permission to be nude anywhere around the dunes or along every nearby beach. Nude bathing is legal only within the prescribed area, and entering the dunes is prohibited. Check the signs when you arrive, use the designated access points, and keep your beach day on the shoreline rather than creating a private path through fragile coastal vegetation.

9. Valalta, Rovinj, Croatia
Best for: longer stays, camping, families seeking organized facilities, and resort-style naturism.
Valalta is not an unrestricted public beach stop. It is a large naturist resort and campsite near Rovinj, with a long shoreline containing pebbly and sandy sections. The Istria tourism portal describes its restaurants, bars, pools, water activities, and other facilities. Access is associated with the resort and its registered guests, so treat it as a holiday property rather than a free public beach.
That distinction is also the reason Valalta ranks highly for travelers who want predictability. A resort can make accommodation, meals, recreation, and beach access part of one plan. If you are considering a stay, research the Valalta naturist resort directly and confirm current admission, accommodation, and seasonal rules before booking.
10. Ada Bojana, Ulcinj, Montenegro
Best for: a complete naturist holiday, sandy beaches, watersports, camping, and a self-contained setting.
Ada Bojana is a naturist settlement on a river island in Montenegro’s southern border area, rather than merely a public beach where some visitors remove their clothes. Montenegro’s official tourism site describes a 1.9-mile sandy beach and the destination’s holiday setting. Resort information adds accommodation, restaurants, sports, camping, and beach services.
The river-mouth location makes conditions changeable. Check current access information, weather, water conditions, and resort operations before traveling. For anyone seeking a multi-day naturist break rather than a few hours on a beach, researching an Ada Bojana naturist resort stay is more appropriate than planning to arrive as though it were an ordinary open-access city beach.
11. Cap d’Agde Naturist Village, France
Best for: travelers who want a complete naturist resort town with accommodation, dining, shops, and a marina.
Cap d’Agde is a purpose-built naturist village, not simply a secluded strip of sand. Its roughly two-kilometer beach sits alongside a marina, accommodation, shops, and restaurants. The official tourism office explains the village’s facilities and naturist setting, while village rules describe controlled access and expectations for naturism on the beach and in many communal areas.

This is the choice for people who want the destination itself to be naturist. It is not necessarily the right choice for someone looking for quiet, anonymous sand, and it should not be marketed as universally family-oriented or uniformly tranquil. Before booking, investigate the current entry requirements, accommodation arrangements, rules, and atmosphere. If that model suits you, research Cap d’Agde naturist village accommodation or access rather than assuming the beach can be visited independently.
12. Plage des Grottes, Île du Levant, France
Best for: experienced naturists, island scenery, privacy, and a more secluded Mediterranean setting.
Plage des Grottes is unusually clear about its expectation. The Var tourism authority identifies it as the only publicly accessible sandy beach on Île du Levant and states that naturism is compulsory there. The island’s Héliopolis naturist tradition gives the beach a distinctive historical and cultural context.
That compulsory-nudity rule is not a minor footnote. This is not a casual mixed-clothing beach stop for travelers who are merely curious. Choose it if you are comfortable with the rule, and check ferry schedules, island access, walking routes, and current local information before setting out. Its remoteness is part of the appeal, but it also means that a missed connection or forgotten supply is more inconvenient than at an urban beach.

13. Filaki Beach, Crete, Greece
Best for: travelers who want an organized naturist beach with resort support.
Filaki is the naturist beach associated with Vritomartis Naturist Resort. The resort describes the beach as about 700 meters from the main complex, with a pebbly and shingle shore, umbrellas, sunbeds, toilets, showers, and a snack bar. Its current beach information also distinguishes Filaki from nearby unnamed beaches, which are not official naturist beaches.
That distinction makes Filaki a better recommendation than simply telling visitors that “the beaches in southern Crete are nude-friendly.” Tolerated nudity, local custom, and an official or resort-supported naturist beach are not identical. If you want facilities and a clearer social framework, investigate a stay at Vritomartis naturist resort and use the resort’s current instructions for reaching and using Filaki.
14. Ses Illetes, Formentera, Spain
Best for: turquoise water, scenic island travel, and visitors comfortable with a mixed beach culture.
Ses Illetes is one of Formentera’s signature beaches and lies inside the Ses Salines Natural Park. The official Formentera tourism site emphasizes its protected setting and natural beauty. Formentera’s beach guidance associates naturism with some quieter stretches of Illetes and nearby beaches, but the official material does not establish one uniformly exclusive nude zone across the entire beach.
Plan accordingly: describe Illetes as a place where naturism is practiced or tolerated in appropriate stretches, not as an entirely clothing-optional beach. Choose a quieter section, observe the people around you, follow natural-park rules, and use designated access. The protected status is central to the experience, so do not leave the marked routes or treat the dunes and vegetation as recreational shortcuts.
15. Little Beach, Maui, Hawaii, United States
Best for: travelers who understand the legal uncertainty and have verified conditions immediately before visiting.
Little Beach has a long-standing clothing-optional culture and is often included in global nudist-beach lists. It is also the most legally sensitive entry here. Current naturist advocacy information warns that enforcement of Hawaii state-park no-nudity rules has been inconsistent and that citations may occur.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That means Little Beach should not be described as an officially designated nude beach or as a place where nudity is guaranteed to be lawful or tolerated on the day of your visit. Verify current Hawaii rules, state-park conditions, access, and enforcement immediately before going. If you are not comfortable accepting the possibility of a citation or a changed local atmosphere, choose one of the more clearly designated or resort-linked options instead.
How to choose the right beach
For a first naturist experience
Start with Haulover if you are in or near Miami. Its designated section, nearby services, and straightforward access reduce the number of unknowns. Meco and Lady Bay are also reasonable choices when their official or local signage matches your plans. A clothing-optional beach is usually less pressurized than a place where nudity is compulsory: you can observe the local rhythm and make your own choice.
For the clearest rule framework
Look first at authorized, designated, or resort-supported areas: Haulover, Meco, Lady Bay, Point Impossible, Maslin, Valalta, Ada Bojana, Cap d’Agde, and Filaki each have a stronger source-based framework than a beach known mainly through custom. Plage des Grottes is clear in the opposite direction: naturism is compulsory on the public beach, so it is best for people who already know that is what they want.
For a resort holiday
Choose Valalta, Ada Bojana, Cap d’Agde, or Filaki. These are not interchangeable with public beaches: accommodation, entry, facilities, and social expectations may be tied to the resort or settlement. Confirm whether you need to be a registered guest, what areas are covered by the rules, and whether facilities operate outside peak season.

For scenery and a sense of place
Wreck Beach brings forest, stairs, and broad Pacific views; Maslin has cliffs and Australian naturist history; Lady Bay places a small beach inside Sydney Harbour scenery; Ses Illetes offers protected island landscapes; and Île du Levant provides a more secluded Mediterranean setting. The most scenic option is not necessarily the easiest or safest for swimming, so pair the view with a realistic assessment of access, tides, currents, and facilities.
For winter warmth
Maspalomas and the Canary Islands are the most obvious choices on this list, while southern European destinations such as Meco, Cap d’Agde, Île du Levant, Filaki, and Formentera depend more heavily on season and weather. Check current forecasts and water conditions rather than treating a destination’s climate reputation as a guarantee.
For legal certainty
Do not use a crowd-sourced map as your only authority. Read the current government, park, tourism, or resort information, then check signs at the beach. Little Beach is specifically a case where the long-standing culture does not remove legal uncertainty. Gunnison is another reminder that a traditional clothing-optional area does not make the whole surrounding park clothing-optional.
Nudist-beach etiquette: the rules that matter everywhere
- Do not stare. Treat other bathers as you would treat clothed strangers at any public beach.
- Ask before photographing anyone. Never take identifiable photos of other bathers without explicit permission. Be careful with wide landscape shots, too; people may appear in the background without wanting to be recorded.
- Nudity is not sexual availability. Do not flirt aggressively, proposition people, or interpret someone’s lack of clothing as consent to conversation or contact.
- Keep sexual behavior private and out of public view. A naturist beach is not a license for public sexual activity.
- Carry and use a towel. Sit on it when using shared loungers, benches, rocks, or other communal surfaces. It is both considerate and hygienic.
- Respect the clothing culture around you. “Clothing-optional” means people may choose; it does not mean everyone must undress. Conversely, follow compulsory-naturism rules where they apply.
- Stay inside the permitted area. Cover up before leaving a designated section when local rules require it, and never assume adjacent dunes, trails, car parks, cafés, or neighboring beaches share the same status.
- Follow park and environmental rules. Do not enter protected dunes, damage vegetation, create informal paths, or leave litter.
- Follow lifeguard and water-safety instructions. Gunnison, in particular, has no lifeguards. A clothing-optional beach can still have serious surf, tide, current, heat, and cliff hazards.
What to bring
A naturist beach does not require special equipment, but a few ordinary beach items become especially useful:
- Quick-dry microfiber beach towel: use it for sitting, hygiene, drying, and easy packing. A second small towel can be helpful if you are moving between sand, rocks, and shared seating.
- High-SPF beach sunscreen: apply it before arrival and reapply as directed, paying attention to skin that is not normally exposed to direct sun. Add a hat and seek shade during the strongest sun.
- Water and food: particularly important at Wreck Beach, where services are limited, and at any beach where facilities may be seasonal.
- Waterproof phone pouch: useful for protecting a phone, keys, cards, and other small valuables from water and sand. It is not a substitute for secure storage or a reason to bring a camera to photograph strangers.
- Simple footwear: useful for steep stairs, hot sand, rocky or shingle beaches, and designated access paths.
- A small bag for rubbish: leave beaches and protected landscapes as you found them.
For an international trip, compare international travel insurance and read the policy’s medical, cancellation, interruption, and activity exclusions. Do not assume that every policy covers every water activity, transport connection, or rule-related incident.
Before you leave: a five-minute verification checklist
- Confirm the exact status. Is the destination designated, authorized, resort-linked, traditional, tolerated, or legally uncertain?
- Check the boundary. Look for the current beach map, lifeguard-stand markers, signs, beach-bar landmarks, or resort access instructions.
- Check access and opening conditions. Verify parking, trails, ferry or road access, resort admission, sunrise-to-sunset rules, and seasonal facilities.
- Check water and weather conditions. Look for tides, currents, surf, water quality, heat, wind, and fire or park alerts.
- Plan your exit. Know where to cover up, where the nearest toilets and water are, and how you will return from steep stairs, a remote island, or a resort area.
Conditions and enforcement are volatile. Official beach, park, resort, weather, water-quality, and access information checked immediately before departure should take priority over this ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best nudist beach for a first-time visitor?
Haulover Beach in Miami is the strongest all-round choice because Miami-Dade County designates a clothing-optional section, it is easy to reach, and parking and beach services are nearby. Stay between the posted boundaries and cover up before leaving the designated area when required.
Are all of these beaches officially clothing-optional?
No. The list includes designated or authorized beaches, traditional clothing-optional areas, resort-linked naturist beaches, places where naturism is practiced or tolerated in particular stretches, and Little Beach in Maui, where legal uncertainty is especially important. Check current local rules and signs before undressing.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a nudist beach sexual?
No. Naturist and clothing-optional beaches are nonsexual public environments. Do not stare, photograph people without permission, proposition other bathers, or engage in public sexual behavior.
Do I have to be nude at a clothing-optional beach?
Usually not. “Clothing-optional” means visitors may choose whether to wear clothing, although local customs and specific resort rules can differ. Plage des Grottes on Île du Levant is a notable exception because the Var tourism authority states that naturism is compulsory there.
Which destinations are best for a full naturist holiday rather than a beach visit?
Valalta in Croatia, Ada Bojana in Montenegro, Cap d’Agde in France, and Vritomartis with Filaki Beach in Crete are the most resort- or settlement-oriented options on this list. Confirm guest access, accommodation rules, facilities, and seasonal operations before booking.
The Bottom Line
Choose Haulover for the easiest first visit, Wreck Beach for scenery, Maspalomas for warm-weather resort convenience, or Valalta, Ada Bojana, Cap d’Agde, or Filaki for a complete naturist holiday. The most important rule is to verify the exact clothing-optional boundary and current local law before you go—especially at Gunnison, Ses Illetes, and Little Beach.
