These are 15 of the best films about fathers and daughters—but they do not all present the same kind of family bond. Some fathers learn to let go, some daughters protect or surpass them, and others must reckon with grief, neglect, incarceration, or separation.

Father-daughter stories are not one emotional category. Some are about a father learning to release his child into adulthood; others are about daughters protecting, challenging, or outgrowing their fathers. Some examine neglect, grief, incarceration, or mental illness, while others ask whether biology is even necessary for a meaningful family bond.

The 15 films below span animation, documentary, comedy, science fiction, family adventure, and intimate drama. They are arranged by the kind of relationship they explore rather than by release date, so you can choose a film according to the mood or conversation you want to have.

Warm father-daughter movies for a shared movie night

1. Father of the Bride (1991)

George Banks loves his daughter Annie, but love does not make him ready for her wedding. The comedy begins with his inability to accept that his little girl is now an adult making decisions of her own, then follows the emotional and financial chaos of the engagement and wedding planning.

What makes the film endure is its understanding that a parent can be genuinely happy for a child and still grieve the end of an earlier stage of family life. George’s resistance is funny, but it also reflects a difficult truth: accepting a daughter’s adulthood requires letting go of a role, not letting go of love. Released on December 20, 1991, it is the most accessible warm-and-funny choice on this list.

Best for: A gentle, recognizable story about a father confronting change.

2. Mary Poppins (1964)

George Banks has organized his life around work, discipline, and respectability. His children, Jane and Michael, need something less orderly but more important: his attention. Mary Poppins helps expose the distance between being responsible for a family and being emotionally present in it.

Jane is not simply a passive recipient of her father’s transformation. Through the children, the film shows George what his businesslike approach to family life has cost him. His eventual change is expressed through play, listening, and shared time rather than through a grand speech about fatherhood.

Content note: Disney lists the film as G-rated. Its fantasy and musical style make it suitable for a broad family audience, although younger viewers may need help with some of the old-fashioned social attitudes.

3. The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)

Rick Mitchell insists on taking his daughter Katie on a family road trip just as she is preparing to leave for film school. Katie is an aspiring filmmaker with a strong creative identity; Rick loves her but does not know how to connect with the person she is becoming.

Their conflict is more specific and more generous than a simple “strict father versus rebellious daughter” setup. Rick is trying to preserve family closeness, while Katie experiences his attempts at connection as evidence that he does not understand her. The robot uprising supplies the action, but the emotional story is about two people learning to see each other accurately.

This is one of the best choices for a father and daughter whose disagreement comes from love expressed badly rather than from a lack of love.

4. The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Tiana’s father, James, is dead before the main events of the film, but his influence remains central to her life. He taught her that food brings people together and that hard work can help make a dream possible. Her ambition to open a restaurant grows partly from those lessons, even as she must determine what her own version of success looks like.

James therefore represents a different kind of father-daughter relationship. He is not present to advise Tiana or resolve her problems; she carries his values into adulthood and tests them against reality. The film celebrates his influence without suggesting that honoring a parent means copying that parent’s life exactly.

Content note: Disney lists the animated film as G-rated. Its treatment of grief is softened by fantasy, music, and comedy.

Fathers and daughters separated by duty, fear, or ambition

5. Interstellar (2014)

Cooper leaves his children to join an expedition beyond the galaxy that may help preserve humanity. His daughter Murph experiences that departure first as abandonment and resentment, then as a problem she must understand. As an adult scientist, Murph becomes instrumental in solving the crisis her father left to address.

The film’s cosmic scale works because its central measurement is intimate: how much distance, time, and sacrifice can a father ask his daughter to bear in the name of a larger duty? Cooper’s promise to return is not a simple guarantee, and the film does not pretend that noble motives erase the damage of absence.

Murph is especially important because she does not remain defined by waiting for her father. She grows into the person who can surpass his understanding and complete work he could not finish. The relationship is therefore about both separation and a daughter’s intellectual independence.

Content note: The film is rated PG-13 in the United States for intense peril and action, some disturbing images, and brief language. It is emotionally demanding as well as visually spectacular.

6. Mulan (1998)

When Mulan’s ailing father is called to serve in the Imperial Army, she disguises herself as a man and takes his place. Her decision is an act of filial love, but it also challenges the social system that assumes a daughter’s proper role is passive obedience.

The father-daughter bond is established through small moments: Mulan sees the physical cost of military service, understands that her father cannot safely refuse, and acts before he can sacrifice himself. Yet the film does not make Mulan’s identity secondary to her duty. Protecting her father becomes the beginning of a journey in which she discovers her own courage and ability.

The animated film is a family-friendly adventure and is listed by Disney as G-rated. It should not be confused with the 2020 live-action Mulan, which is rated PG-13 and has a different tone, structure, and emphasis.

7. The Little Mermaid (1989 or 2023)

Ariel’s curiosity about the human world brings her into conflict with her father, King Triton. He believes that restricting her movements will protect her from a dangerous surface world; Ariel experiences the restriction as a refusal to recognize her right to define herself.

The film captures a familiar parental contradiction: fear can look like control, and control can be defended as love. Triton is not wrong that Ariel faces real danger, but his attempt to prevent her curiosity cannot eliminate her desire to explore. The father-daughter conflict is resolved not when Ariel stops wanting an independent life, but when Triton learns that protection cannot mean permanent confinement.

Both the 1989 animated film and the 2023 live-action adaptation center Ariel as Triton’s youngest daughter. They are distinct versions, so viewers should choose based on whether they want a compact animated musical or a more expansive live-action retelling.

Imperfect and damaged fatherhood

8. The Descendants (2011)

Matt King is a father to two daughters, but he has been emotionally distant from them. When his wife suffers a boating accident, he is forced to face both the possibility of losing her and the fact that his relationship with his children has been neglected.

The film is valuable because it does not treat fatherhood as an identity that automatically produces competence. Matt loves his daughters, but he has not consistently done the work of knowing them. His crisis becomes an opportunity to rebuild that relationship deliberately, through difficult conversations and sustained attention rather than instant emotional transformation.

Its portrait of family repair is awkward, unsentimental, and often funny. Matt’s daughters are not simply waiting to be rescued by his improvement; they have their own anger, knowledge, and judgments about the adults around them.

9. Leave No Trace (2018)

A military veteran and his young daughter live outside mainstream society in an Oregon forest. The father believes this isolated life protects them, but as his daughter grows, she develops needs and aspirations that cannot be met by remaining hidden from the world.

Leave No Trace refuses to turn protective love into an uncomplicated virtue. The father is caring and attentive in important ways, yet his trauma and fear limit his daughter’s life. The film’s hardest question is whether love can require separation: not because the bond is false, but because closeness has become unsustainable.

This is a quiet, compassionate drama rather than a conventional family adventure. It is particularly suited to viewers interested in the difference between a parent’s intentions and a child’s actual needs.

10. Fathers & Daughters (2015)

After his wife’s death, novelist Jake Davis tries to raise his young daughter while suffering a breakdown. The film then moves forward in time to show the adult daughter still living with painful memories from that childhood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its structure asks whether a parent’s love can coexist with behavior that causes lasting harm. Jake’s struggle is not presented as a simple failure of affection, but neither does his grief excuse the effects of his instability on his daughter. The adult portion of the story is concerned with consequences: what children carry forward, what they can name only later, and whether understanding a parent can help without erasing the past.

Content note: The film deals with bereavement, mental illness, childhood trauma, and painful memories. It is a significantly heavier choice than the family-oriented films above.

11. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Royal Tenenbaum returns to the lives of his three gifted adult children after years of betrayal, failure, and absence. His daughter Margot is especially revealing: Royal’s reappearance does not automatically restore trust simply because he wants another chance.

The film treats fatherhood as something that can be damaged by narcissism and neglect long after children have become adults. Royal is funny, theatrical, and capable of flashes of genuine feeling, but his charm does not cancel the history that made his children wary. Any redemption he finds is partial and fragile.

That tension gives the film more precision than a conventional reconciliation story. It asks what an apology means when the injured people are not obliged to accept it, and whether a father can change without demanding that his children reward him for trying.

For viewers drawn to physical film culture, Criterion has released collector-oriented editions of both Paper Moon and The Royal Tenenbaums; edition contents and availability should be checked before purchase.

Unconventional, documentary, and memory-based bonds

12. Paper Moon (1973)

During the Great Depression, con man Moses Pray takes responsibility for Addie Loggins, a recently orphaned girl who may or may not be his biological daughter. Their relationship develops through scams, arguments, competition, and mutual dependence.

The uncertainty about paternity is not a missing piece the film needs to solve. Criterion’s description of Moses and Addie as an unlikely pair of grifters points toward the film’s deeper idea: family can be created through repeated choices and shared survival, not only through confirmed biology.

Addie is no passive child being shaped by Moses. She challenges him, sees through him, and often appears to be his equal in manipulation. Their affection emerges sideways, through practical loyalty and reluctant companionship rather than conventional declarations.

If you want to own one of the classic films on this list, a Paper Moon 4K edition is a natural physical-media option to investigate, subject to current regional availability and stock.

13. Daughters (2024)

This documentary follows four Black girls preparing to reunite with their incarcerated fathers at a father-daughter dance held inside a Washington, D.C., jail. The event is moving, but the film does not present it as a sentimental moment detached from the forces that made the reunion necessary.

Instead, Daughters connects the dance to accountability, repair, and the wider effects of incarceration on Black girls and their families. The fathers’ absence is not treated as an abstract sadness; it is an ongoing condition that shapes how the girls understand trust, love, and what a father is supposed to do.

As a documentary, it also complicates the usual movie-night version of the father-daughter story. Reconnection is possible, but it does not mean the damage has disappeared. The film is best approached as an invitation to listen to the daughters’ experiences rather than as a simple celebration of reunion.

Content note: Expect discussion of incarceration, family separation, accountability, and the criminal-justice system’s impact on Black girls.

14. Father and Daughter (2000)

Michaël Dudok de Wit’s Oscar-winning animated short contains no dialogue. A father leaves, and his daughter continues returning to the landscape and the place associated with him as the stages of her life pass.

The film makes absence its central subject. Repetition, weather, changing bodies, bicycles, water, and open landscapes carry what dialogue would normally explain. The daughter’s longing is not tied to one dramatic confrontation; it becomes part of how memory organizes a life.

At only a short-film length, it is an unusually concentrated choice for viewers who want a father-daughter story built from visual metaphor rather than plot. Its emotional meaning is open enough to accommodate grief, abandonment, separation, or the persistence of a childhood memory.

15. How Do You Measure a Year? (2021)

Jay Rosenblatt’s documentary is built from home-movie recordings in which a father asks his daughter the same questions over many years. The repeated interview becomes a record of change: answers shift, appearances change, and a child gradually becomes an adult in front of the camera.

There is no elaborate fictional crisis to organize the relationship. The film’s subject is ordinary intimacy—the act of asking, answering, observing, and returning to the same questions as time passes. That simplicity makes the father-daughter bond feel unusually immediate, while also revealing how much a parent can miss if they assume a familiar child remains the same person.

It is an ideal companion to Father and Daughter. Dudok de Wit’s short turns absence into a visual memory; Rosenblatt’s documentary shows presence accumulating through years of attention.

Which father-daughter movie should you watch first?

If you want… Start with… Why
A warm comedy Father of the Bride A father learns to accept his adult daughter’s marriage.
A family musical Mary Poppins or The Princess and the Frog One focuses on a father becoming emotionally present; the other on a daughter carrying her father’s values forward.
A daughter protecting her father Mulan Mulan takes her father’s place and discovers her own capability.
A story about growing apart The Mitchells vs. the Machines A loving father and creative daughter struggle to recognize each other’s identities.
Science fiction with emotional stakes Interstellar Cosmic distance becomes a test of a father’s promise to return.
Quiet, morally complicated drama Leave No Trace Protection may require a father and daughter to live apart.
A damaged family trying to repair itself The Descendants A distant father has to learn how to care for his daughters in practice.
A documentary about incarceration Daughters Four girls prepare to reconnect with their incarcerated fathers.
A short, wordless film Father and Daughter Memory and longing unfold without dialogue.
An unconventional family bond Paper Moon Its emotional relationship does not depend on confirmed biological paternity.

Planning a father-daughter movie night

Choose the film according to the viewers, not just the theme. Mary Poppins, the animated Mulan, and The Princess and the Frog are listed by Disney as G-rated choices, while Interstellar is PG-13. The more difficult films on this list involve bereavement, PTSD, mental illness, estrangement, abandonment, incarceration, or emotionally damaging parenting.

Availability is also likely to vary by country and by publication date. A title may be rentable, streamable, or available on disc in one region but not another. Rather than assuming that every film has a current physical edition, check the exact format and seller before buying. For a disc-based evening, a father-daughter movie-night collection can combine one accessible choice with one more challenging film for later discussion; the films themselves should remain the focus.

For collectors, restored physical releases can add value through improved transfers and supplementary material. Criterion editions of Paper Moon and The Royal Tenenbaums are particularly relevant examples, although stock and edition details can change. If you are watching digitally, verify the title’s current availability in your location rather than relying on an old “where to watch” listing.

Why these relationships are so different

The strongest films here do not treat “father-daughter relationship” as a single ideal. George Banks and Rick Mitchell must learn to let their daughters become adults. Mulan protects a father who cannot protect himself, while Ariel challenges a father whose fear has become control. Matt King and Royal Tenenbaum show that affection does not automatically undo neglect. Daughters makes separation and accountability inseparable from reunion, and Paper Moon questions whether biological certainty is the measure of family at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That range is what makes the subject so durable. A father can be present but inattentive, absent but influential, loving but harmful, protective but controlling, or uncertainly related by blood yet deeply connected through action. The best film depends on which of those truths you want to examine.
