There is no responsible, durable “best torrent site” ranking for ebooks and audiobooks. The legal status belongs to the specific work and edition, while piracy domains and mirrors change quickly and may expose visitors to malware. This guide replaces the risky ranking with 15 lawful routes for finding, borrowing, buying, or listening to digital books.
Why a current list of “best torrent sites” would mislead you
A torrent is a distribution method, not a copyright license. The same protocol can be used to share a public-domain novel, an openly licensed audiobook, or an unauthorized copy of a recent bestseller. The important question is whether the specific work and edition are authorized for distribution in your country.
That makes rankings based on uptime, download speed, or catalog size poor measures of legality and safety. A site can change domains, disappear, copy another site’s branding, or index both legitimate and infringing files. A website’s claim that a download is “free” does not establish that it is copyright-free.
For U.S. readers, the U.S. Copyright Office explains that downloading or uploading copyrighted works through peer-to-peer networks without authorization may violate the copyright owner’s reproduction and distribution rights. Copyright law can allow statutory damages of up to $30,000 per work, potentially increasing to $150,000 for willful infringement, as well as attorney’s fees. The exact facts and applicable law matter; this is not a statement that every torrent download produces the same legal outcome.

Enforcement is also not hypothetical. In November 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against alleged operators of Z-Library and said the site’s domains had been taken offline under a court order. That demonstrates enforcement against a particular operation—not that a particular replacement domain is safe or legal.
The U.S. Trade Representative’s 2025 Notorious Markets review, released on March 3, 2026, likewise warns that piracy-related markets can expose consumers to malware. The review says its list is not exhaustive and is not, by itself, a final legal finding about every named market. In other words, a site’s appearance on—or absence from—a list is not a substitute for checking the rights status of the title you want.
Choose the legal route that fits the book you want
| If you want… | Start with… | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Older classics at no charge | Project Gutenberg | Copyright status is jurisdiction-specific; its strongest coverage is older works. |
| Free classic audiobooks | LibriVox | Volunteer narration varies in style and sound quality. |
| Recent books without buying them | Libby or your local library | Library licenses, availability, and wait times vary. |
| Borrowing online editions | Open Library or eligible Internet Archive lending | Not every title or format is borrowable, and loans have controls. |
| New releases and professional narration | Audible or an authorized retailer | Plans, prices, ownership rights, and regional catalogs differ. |
| A dedicated reading device | Kindle, Kobo, or another supported ebook reader | A device does not make an unauthorized file legal. |
15 legal alternatives to torrent sites for ebooks and audiobooks
1. Project Gutenberg for copyright-expired classics
Project Gutenberg free ebooks is the clearest first stop for older literature. Its homepage currently describes a library of more than 75,000 free ebooks, with a focus on works whose U.S. copyright has expired. You can read titles online or download the formats offered on the individual book page.
Use it for classics, historical texts, and other older works—not for current bestsellers. Project Gutenberg’s own copyright guidance is important: “free of charge” does not automatically mean “free of copyright.” Most of its U.S. collection is not restricted by U.S. copyright law, but individual records and notices still control. Readers outside the United States must check their own country’s copyright rules.
2. Project Gutenberg’s linked audio collections
Project Gutenberg also surfaces public-domain audiobook recommendations and audio collections, including links to LibriVox. This is useful when you want an older title in audio rather than text, but check the individual record to see whether the audio is hosted by Project Gutenberg, linked elsewhere, or supplied under a different notice.
Do not assume that an audio version exists simply because the ebook does. Public-domain status of the underlying text does not automatically tell you who owns a newer narration or adaptation.
3. LibriVox for free public-domain audiobooks
LibriVox’s catalog of free public-domain audiobooks is built around recordings made by volunteers. LibriVox says its recordings and associated catalog materials are public domain, and its audiobooks can be played on computers and mobile devices. Some readers also download recordings for offline listening or burn them to a CD.
The trade-off is consistency. Narrators have different voices, pacing, accents, microphones, and recording environments. That is part of the volunteer model, not a defect to conceal. Listen to a sample or preview when available before committing to a long novel.
4. Libby for library ebooks and audiobooks
If you have a card from a participating library, borrow ebooks with Libby. The app lets you search your library’s collection, borrow ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines, place holds, and download loans for offline use. Loans are returned automatically on their due dates, so there is no late-return fine for the digital loan itself.
Libby is often the best legal answer for a current commercial title. Its limitation is not the app but the library’s collection and licensing budget. A popular audiobook may have a waitlist, may be licensed for only a limited number of loans, or may not be offered by your library at all. Search for your library inside Libby rather than assuming that another library’s catalog will be available to you.

5. Open Library digital lending
Open Library digital lending lets users find editions that are available through the Internet Archive’s lending library. Depending on the title, a borrowable book may open in BookReader format and may also offer PDF or EPUB access. Open Library also indicates that books borrowable through its system can be available in audio form.
Treat Open Library as a controlled lending service, not an unlimited download warehouse. Eligibility, loan length, available formats, and whether a particular edition can be borrowed vary by title. Follow the borrow controls and the rights or access notice shown for that edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Internet Archive lending for eligible items
The Internet Archive is another place readers may encounter controlled digital lending, including items surfaced through Open Library. Use the lending mechanism attached to the specific item. A scan that can be previewed is not necessarily a file that can be freely downloaded, redistributed, or converted into an unrestricted audiobook.
This distinction matters especially for older books. The age of a work, the copyright status of a particular edition, and the permissions attached to a digital scan are separate questions.
7. Your local library’s own catalog
Not every library relies on the same app or vendor. Search your public library, university library, or school library’s official catalog for ebook and audiobook borrowing options. The catalog may link to a digital-lending platform, provide browser playback, or offer instructions for another supported app.
This route is particularly useful when Libby does not list your library, when your library has a separate audiobook collection, or when you need a title that is available only through a local consortium. Availability is necessarily geographic and depends on your active borrowing privileges.

For a new ebook that is not available from a library, buy it from an authorized ebook store or directly from the publisher when the publisher offers that option. The official store should identify the title, author, edition, seller, price, supported devices, and any DRM or download restrictions.
Buying from an authorized source supports the rights holder and gives you a clearer answer about authenticity and customer support. It does not necessarily mean the file is DRM-free or transferable between every reading app. Check compatibility before purchase.
9. Publisher-direct audiobook stores
Some publishers and audiobook producers sell downloads or app-based listening directly. A publisher-direct audiobook store can be a good choice when you want a particular narrator, an unabridged edition, a regional release, or a title that is not offered by your library.
Before paying, confirm whether you receive a downloadable file, streaming access, an app license, or a combination. Also check whether the version is abridged, which narrator is used, and whether the purchase is available in your country. These details can differ even when the title name is identical.

10. Audible for current releases and professional narration
Audible membership and individual audiobook purchases are aimed at readers seeking current releases, bestsellers, podcasts, Originals, and professionally produced narration. Audible’s official materials describe plans that may include monthly credits and access to a Plus Catalog, but plan names, prices, benefits, and regional availability can change.
Do not assume that every title is included in every plan. Before joining, compare the exact membership terms shown for your country, including what you can listen to while subscribed, what a credit purchases, what remains accessible after cancellation, and whether a title is sold separately. The distinction between catalog access and ownership is more important than the headline monthly price.
11. Kindle Store and a dedicated ebook reader
The Kindle Store is a lawful route for ebooks offered by Amazon and its publishing partners. Project Gutenberg documents support for reading its DRM-free EPUB and Kindle files on Kindle devices, as well as on Kobo, Nook, phones, tablets, and computers. That makes a dedicated device useful for both purchased books and compatible public-domain files.
For readers who want a purpose-built device, the Kindle Paperwhite is one current option. Amazon identifies the 12th-generation Paperwhite as a 2024 model and lists adjustable warm light, dark mode, USB-C charging, IPX8 waterproof protection, and up to 12 weeks of battery life under its stated conditions. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent battery or durability test, and model availability varies by market.

12. Kobo’s ebook store and readers
Kobo is another commercial ebook ecosystem to check for authorized purchases, supported library borrowing, and compatible reading devices. Its catalog, file support, DRM rules, and library partnerships vary by country, so verify the specific title and device requirements before buying.
Kobo can also be a practical destination for DRM-free or public-domain EPUB files from legitimate sources. Remember that EPUB describes a book’s format, not its copyright status. A freely downloadable EPUB may still be unauthorized.
13. Google Play Books
Google Play Books is an authorized commercial route for ebooks and, where offered in your market, audiobooks. It can suit readers who already use Android or Google’s reading apps, but check the title page for the exact edition, supported devices, download behavior, and whether the purchase is an ebook or audiobook.
Recommended Free Tools
Store availability is not universal. A title sold in one country may be absent in another because publishing rights are frequently divided by territory.
14. Apple Books
Apple Books is another rights-holder-authorized store for ebooks and audiobooks in supported regions. It is most convenient for readers already using Apple devices, but the same practical checks apply: confirm the edition, narration, abridged or unabridged status, regional availability, and whether the book can be accessed on the devices you use.
Do not confuse an app’s ability to import a file with permission to distribute that file. A legitimate app can play an authorized file, a public-domain file, or an infringing copy; the license comes from the source and the specific work.

15. Creative Commons and openly licensed repositories
For contemporary independent writing, educational material, and experimental audio, look for repositories where the creator clearly states a Creative Commons or other open license. The license may allow reading and personal use while restricting commercial reuse, adaptations, or redistribution. Read the full license attached to the title rather than relying on a generic “free download” label.
You can also check an author’s official website for a direct download or a link to an authorized store. This is especially useful for independent authors and podcasters, but verify that the page belongs to the creator or rights holder and that the stated license covers the use you intend.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether a free ebook or audiobook is authorized
- Identify the exact work. Record the title, author, translator, narrator, edition, publisher, and publication date. A public-domain original and a modern translation may have different rights.
- Find the rights statement. Look for a public-domain notice, a Creative Commons license, a publisher authorization, or a library borrowing control. If the page gives no explanation for why a recent commercial title is free, treat that as a warning.
- Check your country. Copyright expiration is jurisdiction-specific. A title that is public domain in the United States may still be protected elsewhere, and a repository may distribute a small number of works under permission rather than because U.S. copyright has expired.
- Use the official domain or library link. Start from the rights holder, recognized library, Project Gutenberg, LibriVox, Open Library, or another repository that clearly explains its licensing. Be suspicious of lookalike domains and unsolicited mirror links.
- Separate format from permission. EPUB, PDF, MP3, and M4B are file formats. None of them proves that copying or sharing is legal. DRM-free also means only that access controls are absent; it does not automatically mean public domain.
- Inspect the download. A book or audiobook should not require an executable installer, browser extension, or unrelated “download manager.” Do not enter payment or account credentials into an unfamiliar mirror.
- Prefer borrowing when you need a current title temporarily. Library loans and commercial subscriptions explain the access terms. A random download usually does not.
Safety checklist for ebook and audiobook downloads
- Obtain files from the rights holder, a recognized library, or a repository that states the work’s copyright or license status.
- Be wary of fake download buttons, aggressive pop-ups, deceptive advertisements, credential prompts, and unexpected file types.
- Do not open an executable file presented as an ebook or audiobook. Normal reading and listening files are typically documents or media files, not installers.
- Keep your operating system, browser, security tools, and reading apps updated. This reduces exposure to known device vulnerabilities but is not a guarantee of safety.
- If you entered a password on a suspicious page, change it from the legitimate service’s official site and review account activity.
The Copyright Office identifies viruses, spyware, unexpected material, and other security concerns associated with unauthorized file-sharing sources. USTR has separately warned that piracy markets can expose users to malware. Avoiding the source is more reliable than trying to make an unsafe source safe with a VPN or maintenance utility; privacy tools do not create authorization, and security software cannot cure copyright infringement.
Which option should you choose?
- Classic ebook: Start with Project Gutenberg, then check the title-level notice and your country’s law.
- Classic audiobook: Try LibriVox, while sampling the volunteer narration first.
- New release on a budget: Search Libby and your local library catalog before buying.
- Borrowable digital scan: Check Open Library or eligible Internet Archive lending, following the loan controls.
- Current bestseller or premium production: Compare Audible, an authorized publisher store, and other verified retailers. Check ownership versus subscription access.
- Offline reading: Use an authorized store, library download, or clearly licensed DRM-free file on a compatible reader.
- Independent or educational work: Look for the author’s official site and a clearly stated Creative Commons or open license.
Prices, plan names, catalog counts, device generations, library participation, and app features change. Recheck those details immediately before publication or purchase, especially outside the United States.
Sources and scope
This guide is U.S.-oriented where it discusses copyright and public-domain status, but the services themselves may have different geographic coverage. For primary information, consult the U.S. Copyright Office, Project Gutenberg’s copyright guidance, Libby, Open Library borrowing guidance, LibriVox, and the official store or library page for the exact title. Government enforcement examples should not be read as recommendations for replacement piracy domains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all torrent downloads illegal?
No. Torrent technology is neutral, but downloading or uploading a copyrighted ebook or audiobook without authorization may infringe copyright. A torrent’s file format or the site’s “free” label does not establish permission.
Are Project Gutenberg books public domain everywhere?
Not necessarily. Project Gutenberg focuses on older works whose U.S. copyright has expired, but it warns that free access is not automatically the same as unrestricted copyright status. Check the individual title notice and the law where you live.
Can I download any ebook from Open Library?
A library loan is controlled access to a licensed or lending copy. Open Library and Internet Archive may offer BookReader access and, for some titles, PDF or EPUB options. Availability and format access vary by edition; borrowing is not the same as owning an unrestricted file.
Does DRM-free EPUB mean an ebook is legal to share?
EPUB is an ebook format, not a license. An EPUB can be public domain, openly licensed, purchased, library-borrowed, or unauthorized. Check the source’s rights statement before copying or sharing it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Are LibriVox audiobooks professionally narrated?
LibriVox recordings are made by volunteers, so narration style, pacing, accents, and sound quality vary. Listen to a sample when available, particularly for a long book.
Does owning a Kindle make downloaded ebooks legal?
No. Kindle, Kobo, phones, and tablets are playback or reading devices. They can display authorized purchases, library loans, public-domain files, and licensed DRM-free books, but the device does not legalize an unauthorized download.
The Bottom Line
The best alternative to a torrent site depends on the title: Project Gutenberg and LibriVox cover many older public-domain works; Libby, Open Library, Internet Archive lending, and local libraries cover borrowing; authorized stores and Audible cover current commercial releases. Check the title-level rights notice, your country’s law, and the access terms before downloading or listening.
