15 Kids’ Cartoons That Are Hilarious, Unapologetic Ripoffs

WatchMojo’s ten cartoon comparisons offer plenty of familiar premises, but they do not establish a definitive list of 15—or prove infringement.

The title promises 15 cartoons, but the available published lists do not establish a definitive set of 15: one WatchMojo list names ten examples, and a second names ten with a partly different selection. What they do offer is a lively starting point for comparing cartoons with strikingly similar premises. Here are the pairings the first list makes, with the overlaps—and the differences—kept in view. “Ripoff” is an editorial jab, not a finding of legal infringement or proof of creator intent.

What counts as a cartoon “ripoff”?

A shared setup can make two shows feel alike without proving that one copied the other. The useful questions are more specific: Which show came first? Do they share a premise, character setup, visual approach, or production connection? And what distinguishes the later show? The examples below follow those questions where the available account supports them.

George Pacheco’s WatchMojo list calls its selections “copycats,” but that is the writer’s critical framing. No named creator, court, regulator, or standards body is cited as confirming the copying allegations. WatchMojo’s list should therefore be read as an opinionated set of comparisons, not a definitive record of infringement.

Ten pairings from WatchMojo’s list

Digimon and Pokémon: kids with battling monster companions

Both series center on children and creatures who battle other creatures, a broad premise that makes the comparison easy to see. WatchMojo notes that the Digimon Adventure animated series debuted in Japan in March 1999, two years after the Pokémon animated series. That sequence is relevant context, but chronology by itself does not establish copying.

#1 Best Overall

American Dragon: Jake Long and Danny Phantom: a young hero with a secret life

Both shows give a young protagonist a double life: Jake is a human-dragon hybrid, while Danny gains ghost powers. The shared secret-hero setup is real, but the characters’ powers and identities differ. WatchMojo itself acknowledges debate over whether Jake Long is an exact copycat, so the resemblance should not be presented as settled fact.

Chip Chilla and Bluey: family life, music, and a visual resemblance

When Chip Chilla debuted in October 2023, viewers noticed similarities to Bluey in visual style, music, and family dynamics, according to WatchMojo. Those are reported reactions and the list’s critical interpretation, not an independently established finding that the show copied Bluey.

SilverHawks and ThunderCats: heroic teams, now in space

WatchMojo describes SilverHawks as a space-set, successor-like version of ThunderCats and notes shared production and distribution connections. That context makes the comparison different from a simple claim that an unrelated show imitated another: there are reported links between the productions. The “ripoff” label remains the list’s characterization.

Galtar and the Golden Lance and He-Man: fantasy heroes and signature weapons

The comparison rests on a heroic fantasy setup and a central weapon: a golden lance for Galtar, and a prominent weapon in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The available account gives those points of resemblance but does not establish a production link or a detailed chronology for the pair.

Challenge of the GoBots and The Transformers: rival transforming-robot cartoons

WatchMojo says the GoBots animated show was indebted to the success of Transformers. But the chronology is more complicated than that description alone suggests: the GoBots toy line debuted in Japan in 1983, before the Transformers toy line. A claim about the animated show’s relationship to a successful rival should not be turned into a blanket claim that the GoBots concept began later.

Street Sharks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: mutated animals fighting crime

Both shows feature a team of mutated animal heroes fighting crime. That high-level team premise is the basis of WatchMojo’s comparison; the account does not supply more specific evidence about chronology, production ties, or creators’ intentions.

Goober and the Ghost Chasers and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!: teens, mysteries, and a talking dog

The shared ingredients are a teen mystery-solving team and a talking dog. WatchMojo also points out a notable distinction: Goober and the Ghost Chasers featured real ghosts, rather than leaning on the same sort of explanation associated with Scooby-Doo. Similar ingredients do not make the shows identical.

Snorks and The Smurfs: a small, colorful community underwater

WatchMojo’s comparison is a simple one: Snorks relocates the idea of a small, colorful community to an underwater setting. The available account supports that premise-level resemblance, not a claim about direct copying or a documented production connection.

Coconut Fred’s Fruit Salad Island and SpongeBob SquarePants: a manic character and comic mischief

The list describes Coconut Fred as a manic talking coconut whose friends get into mischief, and calls the show a riff on SpongeBob SquarePants. That is WatchMojo’s judgment about the resemblance; the cited account does not establish creator intent or a legal conclusion.

Why there isn’t a confirmed list of all 15

The inspected WatchMojo article supplies ten pairings, not 15. A second WatchMojo list also has ten entries, but its selection partly differs; it includes Yogi’s Space Race as a space-set version of the Wacky Races premise. The two lists are editorial collections rather than confirmation of the exact 15 cartoons promised by this title. Naming five more as though they were part of that specific list would go beyond the available evidence.

Influence, resemblance, and proof are different things

Cartoons can share familiar genre conventions without one being a copy of another. An academic dissertation uses “anime-inspired cartoons” for U.S. animation that refers to or emulates anime conventions, and discusses shows such as American Dragon: Jake Long in the context of U.S. productions using East Asian content or leads while retaining much of a U.S. stylistic approach. That broader context helps explain why influence and resemblance can overlap; it does not prove that any particular show copied another. The dissertation’s discussion is useful context, not a verdict on the pairings above.

For a fair comparison, separate what is observable from what is alleged: the plot or character elements the shows share; their release order; any documented production or distribution ties; and the features that make them distinct. A resemblance can be entertainingly obvious to viewers while still falling short of evidence about intent or legal infringement.
