Mario ranks first, but this is an editorial ranking—not an official Nintendo list. The order weighs recognizability, personality, story role, distinctive abilities or gameplay identity, and lasting appeal. Nintendo’s character profiles provide a grounded starting roster; the placements below reflect how effectively each character stands out across the series, not a measured popularity poll.
15. Toad
Toad is a cheerful, loyal Mushroom Kingdom resident who serves Princess Peach and tries to help Mario and Luigi. He is a familiar face in the wider cast, though his supporting role gives him less dramatic weight than the characters above him.
14. Diddy Kong
Donkey Kong’s trusted friend and partner brings a distinct, agile presence to the cast. Nintendo describes him as fast and a strong jumper—traits that give him a clear gameplay identity rather than making him simply a smaller version of his companion.
13. Daisy
Princess of Sarasaland, Daisy stands apart through her cheerful, energetic personality and frequent participation in sports with Mario and friends. She is a lively ensemble character, even if her profile gives her a less central story role than Peach or Rosalina.
#1 Best Overall
- BOWSER JR. ACTION FIGURE FROM THE MOVIE: Kids get the Koopa prince exactly as he looks in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with premium sculpted details from his horns to his shell.
- MARIO TOYS FOR MISCHIEF MAKERS: 17 points of articulation let Bowser Jr. swing, scheme and battle Mario in pretend play. Sturdy plastic and a 5 inch size fit little hands ages 3 to 6.
- SIGNATURE PAINTBRUSH ACCESSORY: Story time gets more creative. Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush lets kids recreate his graffiti tricks and stage villain moments in group play with other Mario figures.
- BOWSER JR. GIFTS FOR KIDS AND COLLECTORS: A standout birthday or Christmas gift for boys and girls 3 and up. The window box doubles as display packaging, and he makes a fun cake topper.
- COLLECT THEM ALL: Bowser Jr. joins Mario, Yoshi and Rosalina in Wave 1, each sold separately, so kids can pit heroes against villains and grow their collection of Super Mario figures.
12. Bowser Jr.
Bowser’s only son is small, strong, and prone to tantrums, according to Nintendo. That combination makes him a natural comic troublemaker as well as a useful foil for Mario; his place here reflects a role that is distinctive but closely tied to Bowser’s.
11. Waluigi
Wario’s friend and accomplice, and Luigi’s self-proclaimed rival, Waluigi is defined by theatrical efforts to beat Mario and Luigi. He brings an intentionally over-the-top comic energy to the cast, even though his identity is more dependent on rivalries than on an independent story role.
10. Boo
Boo turns a simple ghostly premise into a memorable character trait: this shy, mischievous ghost freezes and covers its eyes when someone looks at it. The contrast between menace and bashfulness gives Boo a personality that reads immediately.

9. Donkey Kong
A powerful jungle king who throws barrels, pounds the ground, and loves bananas, Donkey Kong has a strong visual and gameplay identity. His place in the broader Mario cast is less central than the main heroes and rivals, but his recognizable traits make him one of its most substantial supporting figures.

Wario is Mario’s self-professed archrival: boisterous, money-minded, and fond of garlic. His greedy, self-serving personality is a sharp comic counterpoint to Mario’s heroic role, and his distinct motivations keep him from feeling like a simple copy of his rival.
7. Toadette
Toadette fills the fifteenth spot as a familiar Mushroom Kingdom character whose cheerful design and frequent appearances alongside Toad give the supporting cast a recognizable counterpart. Nintendo’s character page lists 14 named profiles and does not include her, so this placement is based on her broader visibility in Mario games rather than a profile from that page.

6. Princess Peach
Peach is a kind ruler who enjoys sports, baking, and cooking. Nintendo describes her and Mario as good friends who help each other, a relationship that gives her more range than the familiar role of someone to rescue. Her dedicated starring adventures also make her one of the series’ most important leads.
5. Luigi
Mario’s brother is a hero in his own right: Nintendo describes Luigi as kind, sometimes nervous around ghosts, and able to jump higher than Mario. That blend of courage and apprehension gives him a personality distinct from his brother, while Luigi’s Mansion games put his ghost-fearing nature at the center of the action.

Mario’s dependable companion is kind and carefree, with abilities that make him more than a mount or sidekick: he can use his long tongue and turn swallowed fruit and enemies into eggs. Those traits give Yoshi a clear gameplay identity, while his friendly temperament makes him an enduring member of the group.

3. Rosalina
Rosalina brings a cosmic scale to the Mushroom Kingdom’s familiar cast. She travels through galaxies accompanied by Lumas, whom Nintendo describes her as their adoptive mother. That unusual role and setting give her a distinct presence among the franchise’s rulers, rivals, and companions.
2. Bowser
King of the Koopas and Mario’s archrival, Bowser is a powerful foe who can breathe fire. His central place in the series comes from more than his threat: his imposing design and clear rivalry with Mario make him the defining antagonist of the cast. Nintendo’s profile also places him in games where the conflict is not simply a straightforward rescue, giving the character room beyond the basic villain role.
1. Mario
Nintendo calls Mario “the main hero of the Mushroom Kingdom.” That central role, combined with his jumping, power-ups, and appearances across platformers, kart racing, sports, and other adventures, makes him the strongest all-around choice. He is recognizable without requiring an elaborate backstory, yet his gameplay identity remains flexible enough to anchor very different kinds of Mario games.
