“Best” can mean most important, most entertaining or most affecting. This list balances four qualities: how central a character is to the story, how much they change, the emotional stakes of their relationships and choices, and how memorable they are. A different weighting could produce a different order: a mythology-first list would favor Eleven and Vecna, while a comedy-and-adventure list might push Steve, Dustin, Robin and Eddie higher.
Netflix’s cast listing and character guide establish the series’ ensemble and recurring roles. The ranking below reflects each character’s place in the story rather than a published popularity score; the official sources do not provide a defensible popularity ranking for these fifteen characters.
The 15 best Stranger Things characters, ranked
1. Eleven (Jane Hopper)
Eleven is the series’ emotional and supernatural center. Her powers make her central to the conflict, but her search for identity and her bonds with Mike and Hopper give that conflict its human dimension. Her direct connection to Henry Creel, later known as Vecna, also ties her personal history to the show’s mythology. No other character carries as many of the series’ major threads at once.

2. Steve Harrington
Steve’s transformation from status-conscious teenager into a dependable protector is one of the show’s clearest long-term growth arcs. He works especially well as part of an ensemble: his partnerships with Dustin, Robin and Nancy, as well as his role with the younger group, let him move between action, mentorship and comedy without losing his sense of purpose.
3. Dustin Henderson
Dustin’s curiosity and quick thinking repeatedly turn strange clues into workable plans. His humor keeps tense group scenes lively, while his friendships with Steve and Eddie give him some of the show’s warmest emotional connections. He is the ensemble’s natural bridge between problem-solving and comic relief.
4. Jim Hopper
Hopper’s story gives the adult cast its strongest sustained transformation. He begins as a damaged police chief, but investigations, sacrifice and imprisonment force him to confront what he owes the people around him. His relationship with Eleven adds the emotional core of a father-daughter story to his role in the supernatural conflict.
5. Max Mayfield
Max’s independence is matched by a vulnerability the series gradually brings into focus. Her Vecna-centered storyline, including her attempt to escape through music and the consequences of the attack, makes her one of the show’s most affecting characters. She gives the supernatural threat an unusually intimate human cost.

6. Joyce Byers
Joyce is driven by the conviction that Will is still there, even when the evidence seems impossible to believe. That instinct—to trust what she sees and keep searching—helps move the plot forward. Her later determination to rescue Hopper extends her role from relentless parent-hero to an active force in the wider story.
7. Nancy Wheeler
Nancy grows from an image-conscious student into an investigative leader who challenges both monsters and institutions. Her reporting instincts give her a distinctive way into the mystery, while her willingness to take an active role in confronting danger keeps her central to the teen storyline.
8. Robin Buckley
Robin’s fast verbal humor is only part of her appeal. Her technical ability and outsider’s perspective make her a valuable partner in the Russian and Vecna investigations, and her friendship with Steve gives both characters room to show a more vulnerable side. She is a capable investigator, not just the source of a joke.
9. Eddie Munson
Eddie’s outsider status and leadership of the Hellfire Club define a concentrated, memorable season-four arc. Once he chooses to stand with the Hawkins group, his bond with Dustin becomes the emotional heart of his story. His impact comes from how sharply that arc is drawn, even across a shorter stretch of the series.

10. Lucas Sinclair
Lucas brings practicality and skepticism to the party, but neither quality keeps him from acting bravely when it matters. His relationship with Max gives the supernatural storyline a close, personal stake. His season-four choices also capture the strain of trying to belong both to the popular crowd and to his friends.
11. Will Byers
Will’s disappearance launches the series, and his sensitivity to the Upside Down continues to connect him to its threat. He is less defined by action than some of the other characters, but his quieter emotional perspective gives the ensemble a different register and keeps him foundational to the story.
12. Vecna (Henry Creel / One)
Vecna gives the show’s mythology a face and links the Hawkins threat to the laboratory and Eleven’s past. He is a compelling antagonist because those connections make the conflict feel personal as well as supernatural. He ranks below the heroes because his role is more tightly focused on the central threat than varied across relationships and kinds of growth.
13. Mike Wheeler
Mike’s loyalty and leadership help anchor the original party, and his relationship with Eleven is one of the series’ defining bonds. His influence is strongest in the early seasons; later stories distribute the action across a larger ensemble. His place here reflects that foundational importance alongside a smaller share of the later spotlight.

Erica’s confidence and intelligence make her an effective ally, especially when the group needs someone willing to challenge assumptions and take risks. Her role grows from memorable comic interjections into active participation in the group’s plans, giving her more weight than a supporting punchline.
15. Jonathan Byers
Jonathan helps establish the series’ grounded mystery through his photography, his protectiveness toward Will and his early investigations. He remains important to the family story, but later seasons give him less independent momentum than Nancy, Joyce or Hopper. That narrower development puts him last in this ranking, not outside the ensemble’s foundation.

There is no popularity score in Netflix’s official cast and character material that establishes a definitive answer. Eleven is the strongest choice if “popular” means central to the story; Steve, Dustin, Robin and Eddie may lead for viewers who prize humor, chemistry or a memorable individual arc. Those are different ways of judging a favorite, not evidence of a measured fan ranking.
Which characters matter most to the story?
For the series’ supernatural mythology, Eleven and Vecna are the central pair. Hopper and Joyce carry much of the adult story, while Mike and Will remain crucial to the original party and its relationships. Steve, Dustin, Nancy and Robin are among the ensemble’s most active investigators and problem-solvers. Max, Eddie and Lucas bring especially strong emotional stakes to season four.

A ranking focused on story importance would likely move Eleven, Hopper, Joyce, Mike and Will upward. One centered on entertainment could favor Steve, Dustin, Robin and Eddie. If emotional impact is the main test, Max, Eddie and Lucas have especially strong cases. The order here balances those approaches rather than treating any one as the only valid definition of “best.”
