Periscope is no longer available as a standalone app. X sunset its iOS and Android apps on March 31, 2021, and the old service no longer accepts new accounts, live broadcasts, or coin purchases. X now directs users to X Live.
For most former Periscope users, the right replacement is not automatically the platform with the most features. Choose X Live if your audience remains on X, YouTube Live for searchable replays, Instagram Live or Facebook Live for simple social broadcasting, and Twitch for recurring shows or gaming. If you need overlays, guests, or multistreaming, use a production tool such as Streamlabs Mobile, PRISM Live Studio, StreamYard, or Restream.

What happened to Periscope?
Periscope’s standalone iPhone and Android apps were sunset on March 31, 2021. According to the official X FAQ, users cannot create new Periscope accounts, broadcast through the old apps, or purchase coins there. Some historical Periscope web pages may still reference past broadcasts, but that does not mean the mobile service is operational.

X directs users who want to broadcast on its network to X Live. In the X app, the live-broadcast route is associated with the camera or compose interface. Brands, publishers, and creators may also use Media Studio or supported third-party production tools, subject to current X policies and account access.
Old pages promising a Periscope APK or an App Store download are outdated at best and risky at worst. Use official platform websites and app stores rather than unofficial downloads.
What made Periscope distinctive?
Periscope combined several things that are now spread across different services:

No current service reproduces all of those qualities exactly. A native social platform may provide discovery but limited production control. A tool such as Restream may distribute a high-quality broadcast but provide no audience of its own. The closest alternative therefore depends on which part of Periscope mattered most.
The 15 best alternatives
1. X Live — closest to Periscope for an X audience
Best for: Former Periscope users whose followers are still on X.
X Live is the most direct first-party successor to Periscope’s Twitter-centered broadcasting model. It preserves the basic idea of opening a social app and broadcasting to an existing network, making it the first option to test for spontaneous updates, field reporting, and public conversation.
Strengths: Familiar social distribution, live interaction, and a natural route to X followers. Limitations: It is a feature inside X, not a standalone Periscope replacement, and complete feature parity should not be assumed. Production options, account access, replay behavior, and third-party workflows can change.

Choose it if your audience already watches and shares content on X. Avoid making it your only option if your audience has migrated elsewhere or you need a durable video archive.
2. YouTube Live — best general-purpose replacement
Best for: Broad reach, searchable replays, education, events, and long-term video value.
YouTube Live is usually the strongest all-round choice when the broadcast matters after the live moment. A stream can become part of a channel archive, be shared by direct link, and support a more deliberate title, thumbnail, description, and category than many casual social broadcasts.
It suits tutorials, interviews, lectures, public meetings, news updates, and events. Mobile live features may require channel verification, account eligibility, or other current restrictions, so confirm the rules before an important broadcast.
Choose it if replay and search matter as much as live chat. It is less Periscope-like when the goal is an entirely spontaneous broadcast to strangers already browsing a social feed.
3. Instagram Live — best for casual social broadcasting
Best for: Creators and organizations with an established Instagram audience.

Instagram Live has a familiar phone-first workflow and strong social interaction. It works well for announcements, informal Q&As, behind-the-scenes footage, product conversations, and creator updates.
Its main advantage is not independent live discovery; it is access to people who already follow or regularly encounter the account. Production-heavy layouts, external feeds, multistreaming, guest management, and archiving may be more constrained than in dedicated tools, and Meta’s features can change.
Choose it if your audience already lives on Instagram and simplicity matters more than elaborate production.
4. Facebook Live — best for groups and local communities
Best for: Community groups, local organizations, Pages, events, and broad social audiences.
Facebook Live can be useful when viewers are organized around a Page, Group, profile, or event. That makes it a practical choice for town organizations, clubs, churches, schools, local news, and community announcements where the audience already gathers.
Access and reach vary by account type, Page, Group, region, and Meta policy. Check the audience setting carefully: a stream intended for a private group should not be treated like a public broadcast. Replay availability and retention should also be confirmed for the specific publishing destination.

5. Twitch — best for gaming and recurring live communities
Best for: Gaming, creative streams, live commentary, and regular shows.
Twitch has mature live-chat, moderation, community, subscription, and creator workflows. It is a better fit than Periscope-style social apps for someone building a recurring program with regular viewers and moderators.
It is less suitable for a one-off neighborhood update or a general-interest broadcast aimed at people who do not already use Twitch. For mobile gaming or outdoor broadcasts, test camera, screen capture, audio, battery use, and network performance before going live.
6. TikTok LIVE — best for discovery-led entertainment
Best for: Personality-led entertainment, short-form creators, and recommendation-driven discovery.

Best for: Mobile creators who need more production control than a native social app offers.

Streamlabs Mobile adds creator-oriented capabilities such as overlays, alerts, and collaborative camera workflows. Twitch identifies it as a feature-rich iOS and Android option in its mobile streaming guidance.
It is a broadcasting tool, not an audience platform. You normally connect it to destinations such as Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook; installing Streamlabs does not automatically create a community or improve discovery. Advanced tools may be paid, platform-specific, or subject to integration changes.
8. PRISM Live Studio — best for mobile scenes and effects
Best for: Beginners who want scenes, effects, adaptive streaming, and flexible mobile production.
PRISM Live Studio is designed for iOS and Android mobile streaming. Twitch describes it as supporting multistreaming, adaptive bitrate, and real-time effects. It can be a useful middle ground between a bare native app and a desktop broadcasting setup.
Confirm current destinations, multistream limits, and paid features inside the app or on the official PRISM website. As with Streamlabs, it improves the broadcast workflow but does not supply a built-in audience.

Best for: Guest interviews, panels, webinars, and branded broadcasts.
StreamYard is designed around browser-based production, guest invitations, layouts, branding, and distribution to supported destinations. It is much better suited than Periscope for a planned interview with multiple speakers or a company presentation.
The trade-off is setup. It is not as immediate as opening a native social app, and mobile support, destination limits, recording, and branding depend on the current plan. It is a production layer, so audience reach still comes from the connected platforms and the event promotion.
10. Restream — best for multistream distribution
Best for: Sending one broadcast to several supported destinations.
Restream centralizes distribution and stream management, which can reduce the need to repeat the same event separately on YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, or other channels. It is useful when the creator already has audiences in more than one place.
Multistreaming is not universal. Platform APIs, account permissions, vertical-video requirements, guest features, and destination policies can limit the combination. Chat may also be fragmented or inconsistently unified. Start with one destination, then add another after testing.
11. Riverside — best for remote interviews and recorded shows
Best for: Podcasts, remote interviews, and broadcasts where recording quality matters.
Riverside is a stronger fit than Periscope when the priority is a polished conversation, guest workflow, or high-quality recording that can be reused after the event. It is oriented toward produced content as well as live use.

That focus makes it a poor substitute for spontaneous public discovery. Confirm current mobile capabilities if you plan to work entirely from an iPhone or Android device, especially for guest management, recording, and live destinations.
12. Vimeo — best for branded and controlled events
Best for: Organizations that need presentation control, branding, embedding, or a managed video experience.
Vimeo is more appropriate for a company event, conference, product presentation, or controlled broadcast than for a casual public update. Its value lies in professional delivery and video management rather than social-feed discovery.
Live functionality is generally associated with higher-tier offerings, so check the current plan and feature requirements. Vimeo is usually excessive for a user who simply wants to go live from a phone to friends.

It is not necessarily an instant, universal in-app feature. Account or Page eligibility, approved broadcasting methods, and third-party tools may be required. Review LinkedIn’s current guidance before promising a live event.
14. Kick — best for creators seeking another live community
Best for: Creators evaluating an alternative live-streaming community, particularly in gaming and personality-led content.
Kick offers live broadcasting and a creator-focused alternative to larger platforms. It may appeal to streamers who want to experiment with another community and distribution channel.
Audience fit, moderation expectations, regional availability, mobile capabilities, and monetization rules require careful checking. It may not be the right environment for family content, formal education, or organizations with strict brand-safety requirements.
15. BIGO LIVE — best for social live entertainment
Best for: Social entertainment, live interaction, virtual gifts, and live-battle formats.
BIGO LIVE is substantially different from Periscope’s public-interest and spontaneous-broadcast identity. Its appeal is an entertainment-oriented culture built around interaction and virtual-gifting features.
That difference is important. BIGO may suit a creator focused on social performance and audience interaction, but it may be a poor fit for a documentary researcher, local reporter, educator, or organization seeking a formal, controlled event.

Which Periscope alternative should you choose?
For breaking news and field reporting
Start with X Live, Facebook Live, Instagram Live, or YouTube Live. The most important factors are cellular reliability, privacy, moderation, notifications, and whether the replay can be saved or exported. Test the workflow in the location where you expect to report; an excellent platform cannot compensate for weak upload bandwidth.
For gaming
Twitch is the natural first choice, with YouTube Live, Kick, Streamlabs Mobile, and PRISM Live Studio also worth considering. Prioritize screen capture, microphone support, alerts, overlays, chat moderation, replay retention, and account eligibility.
For interviews and podcasts
Use YouTube Live, StreamYard, Riverside, LinkedIn Live, or Vimeo. Guest invitations, split-screen layouts, separate audio, recording quality, branding, and replay control matter more than one-tap spontaneity.
For family, community, and local events
Facebook Live, YouTube Live, Instagram Live, or Vimeo may fit. Check whether the event can be private, unlisted, or limited to a Group; whether viewers need accounts; how long the replay remains available; and whether copyrighted music is permitted.
For discovery-led entertainment
Consider TikTok LIVE, Instagram Live, BIGO LIVE, Twitch, or YouTube Live. Discovery is never guaranteed: it depends on recommendation systems, account history, category, timing, content, and audience behavior.
Platform or tool? The distinction matters
Native live platforms include X Live, YouTube Live, Instagram Live, Facebook Live, Twitch, TikTok LIVE, LinkedIn Live, Kick, and BIGO LIVE. These services can provide an audience, follower graph, notifications, chat, and platform-native discovery.
Production and distribution tools include Streamlabs Mobile, PRISM Live Studio, StreamYard, Restream, Riverside, and Vimeo. These can improve scenes, audio, guests, branding, recording, or distribution, but they do not automatically provide viewers. You still need accounts, permissions, and an audience on the connected destination.
How to migrate from Periscope
- Identify where your audience already is. Audience migration is usually more important than feature parity.
- Select one primary destination. Start with X, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, or another platform that fits your viewers.
- Confirm eligibility. Check age, region, verification, account standing, channel requirements, and any live-access approval.
- Install only the official app or tool. Avoid Periscope APKs and unofficial download pages.
- Allow camera and microphone access. Review notification, location, and screen-recording permissions.
- Set privacy and moderation controls. Decide whether the broadcast is public, unlisted, private, group-limited, or follower-only where supported.
- Run a short test. Use a private or unlisted stream if available. Check video, audio, comments, replay, and network stability.
- Announce the new destination. Share a direct link, schedule the event, and tell former followers where to find you.
- Save important replays. Do not rely on a social platform as the only archive for critical material.
- Add multistreaming only after the first workflow is reliable.
Common problems and fixes
The Go Live button is missing
Possible causes include age or regional rules, account verification, a policy strike, an outdated app, or destination-specific restrictions. Update the app, confirm eligibility in official support documentation, try a supported browser or encoder, and use another destination if necessary. Do not attempt to bypass platform restrictions with unofficial tools.
The stream starts and immediately ends
Test the upload connection, switch networks, reduce resolution or bitrate, restart the app, reauthorize the destination, and check for account restrictions. Battery heat and thermal throttling can also interrupt a long mobile broadcast.
Viewers cannot find the stream
Check whether the broadcast is unlisted or limited to a Group, Page, or followers. Share the direct stream page before going live, schedule the event where possible, use a clear title, and publish the replay afterward. A production tool cannot solve the problem if the creator has not built an audience on the destination.
Audio sounds poor
Wind, distance, venue noise, Bluetooth latency, blocked microphones, automatic gain, and missing permissions are common causes. Keep the microphone close, use a wired or tested wireless microphone, monitor with headphones, and record a short test before publishing.

Possible causes include retention rules, copyright claims, moderation, a failure to save the stream, or account and plan limits. Download or export important broadcasts, and keep a local recording when permitted.
Safety, privacy, connectivity, and copyright
- Check the camera frame for addresses, documents, screens, license plates, children, and bystanders.
- Disable visible notifications and use Do Not Disturb.
- Confirm the audience setting and whether location information is exposed.
- Use moderation controls and assign a moderator for larger broadcasts.
- Carry a charged phone or power bank.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi where available, but test cellular performance for field work.
- Lower resolution or bitrate when the connection is unstable.
- Remember that live video is not exempt from copyright rules. Music, sports, films, television, and licensed event footage can be muted, interrupted, claimed, or removed.
Monetization is conditional on country, age, account standing, program enrollment, watch time or follower requirements, content category, payment verification, and tax details. Treat gifts, subscriptions, ads, tips, and memberships as eligibility-dependent rather than guaranteed features. Exact prices, revenue shares, storage limits, and plan names change and should be checked on each provider’s official site.
Bottom line
There is no single replacement that recreates every part of Periscope. X Live is the closest choice for an existing X audience; YouTube Live is the strongest general-purpose option when replays matter; Instagram Live and Facebook Live are easiest when followers already use those networks; and Twitch is better for gaming and recurring communities. Choose Streamlabs Mobile, PRISM Live Studio, StreamYard, Restream, Riverside, or Vimeo when the need is production, guests, multistreaming, recording, or professional presentation rather than audience discovery.
