The 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, written by Kelly Marcel and adapted from E. L. James’s novel, with James also serving as a producer. The production stories below come from interviews and a home-video announcement published in 2015. They offer a window into choices made on the film—not a complete account of everything that happened on set.

How the cast and crew approached the intimate scenes

The intimate scenes came later in the schedule

Taylor-Johnson said the production waited to film the more intimate scenes until cast and crew had spent time getting to know one another. In a contemporaneous interview with TIME, she described trust as central: “I think the most important thing really was the sense of trust.” She also spoke about trust among the actors and with cinematographer Seamus McGarvey as part of how the scenes were filmed.

Johnson described the Red Room scenes as especially vulnerable

Dakota Johnson said the Red Room scenes were the most vulnerable scenes in the movie and that the set was closed while they were filmed. Jamie Dornan said he felt protective of his co-star. Those are the actors’ accounts of their experience; they do not, by themselves, establish other details about set protocols. ABC News reported their comments in 2015.

The flogger scene took hours and repeated takes

Johnson described filming the flogger scene as physically and emotionally taxing. She recalled being restrained and blindfolded, with the sequence requiring repeated takes over several hours. Her comments make clear that staging a scene for the camera could be demanding even though the action belonged to a fictional story. TIME collected her account alongside Dornan’s recollections of difficult scenes.

Two scenes put different kinds of pressure on the actors

Dornan felt the interview scene had a lot to establish

Christian Grey’s early interview with Ana had to convey his authority while making the connection between the characters understandable, Dornan said. “But I guess the scene that had for me personally the most pressure on it, was the interview scene.” He said the scene took two days to shoot. His comments were published by TIME in 2015.

Ana’s negotiation was changed to underline her assertiveness

In the film version, Ana negotiates with Christian in his office and insists on edits to the agreement. Johnson called the scene a favorite. The adjustment puts Ana’s insistence on the terms of the relationship on screen rather than simply reproducing the book’s version. TIME described the adaptation and the scene’s changes.

The film reshaped the book rather than reproducing it

Some material and the ending changed

Taylor-Johnson discussed leaving out graphic details from the novel and changing its ending for the film. The adaptation was therefore not a scene-by-scene transfer of the book. TIME’s account of the film’s adaptation describes some of those choices.

Each sex scene needed a reason to be there

Taylor-Johnson said the challenge was deciding how to place the sex scenes without making them feel gratuitous, while giving each scene characterization and narrative purpose. “The thing that was most difficult was how and where to pepper the sex, and to not make it feel like it was gratuitous,” she told The Guardian. That principle helps explain why adapting the novel involved choices about what each scene contributed, not just what could be shown.

James had a hand in the film’s design and wardrobe

The Red Room layout came from the author

Production designer David Wasco told TIME that E. L. James drew up the layout for the Red Room. James was frequently on set, according to TIME, and she and Taylor-Johnson sometimes tussled over creative decisions. Her involvement extended beyond the source novel to specific production choices. TIME reported on the collaboration and the room’s design.

Mirrors and art prompted a design disagreement

Wasco recalled James objecting to mirrors in Christian’s apartment because Christian did not like looking at himself. Taylor-Johnson, meanwhile, wanted art in the apartment. The differing views show how character interpretation could shape set dressing as well as dialogue and plot. The apartment-design account appeared in TIME.

A dance-scene dress changed for practical reasons

Taylor-Johnson said she argued that the tight dress described in the book would not work for the dance scene. A flowy dress appears in the film instead. The change was a practical costume choice for staging the scene, as reported by the Portland Press Herald.

Taylor-Johnson sought Beyoncé’s approval for a song

Taylor-Johnson recounted watching a sex scene with Beyoncé to ask for approval to use a song over it. She said she felt embarrassed by the scene’s explicitness. The anecdote links the film’s soundtrack to a practical clearance conversation—and captures the director’s own reaction to watching the scene with the artist. The Independent published her account in 2015.

The 2015 Blu-ray announcement offered a look at the production

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced bonus material for the film’s Blu-ray, including a making-of feature, 360-degree apartment tours that included the Red Room, and a discussion with a consultant and the property master. The announcement also listed theatrical and unrated home-video versions. It documents what the distributor announced for that 2015 package; it does not establish current retailer stock or the contents of any present-day listing. Universal’s announcement was distributed by PR Newswire.
