If Apple Music opens on your Windows 11 PC but songs will not download, first check that you are downloading a library item—not merely a search result—and that you are signed in to the Apple Account with an active Apple Music subscription. Then work through the fixes below from lowest risk to highest.
Apple distributes its dedicated Windows app through the Microsoft Store. The current official workflow is to add content to your library, then download it from the Library.
Before troubleshooting: identify which download is failing
- The app will not install: investigate Microsoft Store, Windows compatibility, region, account, or update problems.
- The app opens, but songs will not download: check your Apple Account, subscription, library, Sync Library, storage, network, and app state.
- Songs download but fail offline: check authorization, subscription status, incomplete downloads, and catalog availability.
Do not start by reinstalling the app. After every significant fix, test one small song before attempting a large album or playlist.
Use the correct Apple Music download process
- Open Apple Music and sign in.
- Find a song, album, or playlist.
- Select Add or More > Add To Library.
- Open Library, then choose Songs, Albums, or Playlists.
- Select the item and choose Download or More > Download.
Apple documents this add-before-download sequence in its Windows user guide. The visible button can vary by view or app version, so check the More menu if Download is not displayed directly.

1. Confirm whether the app or the songs are the problem
If Apple Music is missing, will not install, or will not open, this is initially a Microsoft Store or compatibility issue—not a song-download issue. Apple’s Windows app guidance identifies Microsoft Store as the official source for Apple Music. iTunes remains an alternative for PCs that do not meet the requirements for Apple’s dedicated apps, but it is not the default solution for a supported Windows 11 installation.
2. Check your Apple Account and subscription
Click your account name at the bottom of the Apple Music sidebar and open the account details or View My Account area. Confirm that:
- you are using the Apple Account associated with the subscription;
- the Apple Music subscription is active;
- there is no billing or expired-trial problem; and
- family access is attached to this Apple Account, if applicable.
Your Microsoft account for the Store does not have to be the same account as the Apple Account that owns Apple Music access. Apple’s account instructions are available in its Windows guide.

- Sign out of Apple Music.
- Close the app completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Apple Music and sign in again with the subscribing Apple Account.
- Test one song.
This refreshes the session and is a low-risk diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Apple documents the sign-in process, but account refreshes will not resolve every catalog, storage, or service-side failure.
4. Add the item to your library first
A search result is not always the same as a library item. If Download is missing, search for the song again, choose Add or More > Add To Library, then download it from a Library category. If Add To Library is unavailable, continue with the account, subscription, and Sync Library checks below.
5. Turn on Sync Library
- Open the Sidebar Actions button at the top of the sidebar.
- Choose Settings.
- Open General.
- Turn on Sync library.
- Close and reopen Apple Music.
Apple specifically lists disabled Sync Library as one reason Add or Add To Library may not be available. Syncing a large library can take time and may reveal missing, duplicated, or greyed-out entries.
6. Test another song or album
Try a new single, an album by another artist, and a small playlist. The result helps narrow the cause:

- One song fails: the item may have a catalog, licensing, metadata, or regional problem.
- One album fails: the album entry or its availability may be the issue.
- Everything fails: investigate the account, app, network, storage, Store, or Apple service.
Apple Music availability and features can vary by country or region. Do not assume a title is unavailable globally based on one failed download.

7. Check Apple System Status
Open Apple’s System Status page and check Apple Music, Apple Music subscriptions, and related account services. If Apple reports an outage, wait and retry later. If the services appear normal, continue with local troubleshooting. The page is a point-in-time check, so note when you checked it.
8. Test the network without permanently disabling security
- Confirm that other websites open.
- Try streaming the same track.
- Temporarily test with a phone hotspot.
- Disconnect from a VPN or proxy for the test.
- Check whether firewall or security software is blocking Apple Music.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If streaming works but downloads do not, basic internet access is probably not the whole problem; library state, authorization, storage, or the download service path may be involved.
9. Check free space and the music location
Make sure the destination drive has sufficient free space and is connected, writable, and healthy. An external drive that is disconnected, full, or unstable can make a download appear stuck.

Apple lists the default music folder as HomeMusicApple Music. To view the configured location, open Sidebar Actions > Settings > Files > Change. Apple warns against changing the Apple Music folder or its internal folder structure. Its documented Files settings primarily concern imported files and library storage, so do not assume changing this location will move every subscription download.
Also check whether cloud-sync software or Windows cleanup tools are interfering with the folder.
10. Do not manually delete Apple Music folders
Deleting hidden or visible Apple Music folders from File Explorer can remove local downloads, library state, or personally imported music. Back up imported music before any reset or reinstall.
If music was moved, Apple provides recovery guidance for locating files, including using a song’s properties and Show in Explorer. Follow Apple’s file-location instructions rather than deleting folders at random.

- Open Microsoft Store.
- Go to its Library or updates area.
- Install any Apple Music update.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart Windows and test one download.
Apple says updates for its dedicated Windows apps are checked through Microsoft Store. Microsoft also notes that a recent Windows update may require a restart before Store installation operations work correctly.

12. Repair Apple Music
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Apple Music and open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen Apple Music and test one song.
Repair is the preferred Windows recovery option because it is less disruptive than Reset. Exact labels and availability can vary by Windows build and app packaging.
13. Reset Apple Music
If Repair does not help, return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Apple Music > Advanced options and choose Reset.
Reset is more disruptive than Repair. It may clear app data or settings, require you to sign in again, require Sync Library to be enabled again, and force offline content to be downloaded again. Afterward, sign in, confirm the subscription, enable Sync Library if needed, and test one song before restoring a playlist.
14. Reset Microsoft Store or reinstall Apple Music
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
Then update or reinstall Apple Music from its official Microsoft Store listing.
Reinstall Apple Music
- Back up personally imported music.
- Uninstall Apple Music from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
wsreset.exe. - Reinstall Apple Music from Microsoft Store.
- Sign in again and enable Sync Library.
- Test one download.
Reinstallation can remove app state and require offline content to be downloaded again. It should come after the account, library, storage, update, Repair, and Reset checks. Resetting Windows 11 is not a normal Apple Music troubleshooting step.

The Download button is missing or greyed out
- Confirm an active Apple Music subscription.
- Confirm the correct Apple Account.
- Turn on Sync Library.
- Add the item to your library.
- Try another title and consider regional availability.
Apple directly identifies sign-in, subscription, and Sync Library conditions as reasons Add options may be unavailable.
The button exists but nothing happens
Update Apple Music, restart Windows, test without a VPN or proxy, check available storage, reset the Microsoft Store cache, and use Repair. If the problem affects every title, check Apple System Status before resetting the app.
Downloads stop at zero or remain incomplete
Check free space, the configured destination, external-drive connectivity, and whether a small different song downloads. Then check Apple System Status and try Repair or Reset. Avoid repeatedly starting a large playlist while diagnosing the problem.

Downloads complete but do not play offline
Confirm that the item shows as downloaded rather than merely added. Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet to test it. If it fails, sign in again, confirm the subscription is active, and check whether the item has been removed or is unavailable in your region. If necessary, remove that download and recreate it.
Only purchased music fails
Purchased iTunes Store music is different from Apple Music subscription content. Treat this as a purchase authorization or library issue. Apple’s guide covers playback and authorization problems in its Windows troubleshooting documentation.
Imported MP3 or AAC files fail
Locally imported files are controlled by your library and file locations, not by the same subscription entitlement as Apple Music catalog downloads. Check the file path, drive availability, permissions, and backup status before changing storage settings.
Dolby Atmos downloads behave differently
Where available, Apple Music for Windows includes a setting for downloading Dolby Atmos. Stereo and Dolby Atmos versions may not behave identically, so check the relevant playback and download settings before treating one format’s behavior as a general Apple Music failure.
What not to install
Do not use registry cleaners, unofficial Apple Music downloaders, or conversion tools as a first-line fix. They are unnecessary for the official troubleshooting path and can create security, privacy, licensing, DRM, or data-loss problems. Apple Music subscription downloads are intended for offline playback within Apple Music, not as ordinary transferable MP3 files.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if the problem continues after the account, subscription, library, region, service-status, storage, update, Repair, and Store checks. Contact support sooner if:
- your subscription is active but Apple Music repeatedly reports an entitlement or billing error;
- family access is not recognized on the correct Apple Account;
- purchased music requests authorization repeatedly;
- the same catalog item fails on multiple devices; or
- downloads vanish or fail after a clean reinstall.
Have your Windows version, Apple Music app version, exact error message, affected songs or albums, Apple Account status, and whether streaming works ready for the support representative.
