The best shonen anime depends on what you want to watch: a sprawling adventure, supernatural fights, sports, suspense, or science fiction. Shonen is a broad publishing and demographic label, not a single genre or a rule about who can enjoy a show. This selection of 13 series is an editorial shortlist, not an objective ranking, chosen to give newcomers and returning fans distinct places to start.
What shonen means—and what it doesn’t
Shonen, also romanized shōnen, means “boy” in Japanese. Running Press Kids’ A Kid’s Guide to Anime & Manga, published by Hachette Book Group, uses that plain gloss while noting that the audience today includes people of all kinds around the world. The label reflects a historical target demographic; it does not mean these shows are only for boys.
Nor does shonen describe one plot formula. Its range includes battle adventures, sports, psychological suspense, and science fiction. That variety is why this list includes more than action series. The choices below are organized around the kind of viewing experience each offers, rather than ranked from objectively best to worst.
13 shonen anime shows to consider
1. Dragon Ball Z — for classic action-adventure
A foundational pick if you want a classic shonen action adventure. Its place on this list is about its status as a familiar example of the category, not a claim that every viewer must start here.

2. Naruto — for a long-form ninja adventure
Naruto is a recognizable entry point for viewers drawn to a ninja setting and a story built to unfold over time. Netflix’s shounen catalog also lists Naruto Shippuden; treat that as a separate sequel-series listing when planning what to watch.
Best for: Viewers ready to settle into a long-running adventure.
3. One Piece — for an expansive pirate quest
Luffy and his crew set out in search of the legendary treasure known as the One Piece. The series’ scale is part of its appeal, but it can also feel daunting if you want a short commitment. TechRadar describes it as a sprawling adventure; Netflix and Crunchyroll include it in their shonen catalogs.
