John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China is a 1986 fantasy action-comedy starring Kurt Russell as trucker Jack Burton, who is drawn into a supernatural adventure beneath San Francisco’s Chinatown. Its production record includes a divided shoot between city locations and studio sets, conflicting budget accounts, and a screenwriting-credit story more complicated than a simple list of names.

1. The film’s official description calls it a kung-fu monster-and-ghost story

20th Century Studios describes the movie as a “mystical action-adventure-comedy” and presents Jack Burton as a tough truck driver caught up in the imaginary world beneath Chinatown, where ancient ghosts and evil spirits dwell. That framing captures the film’s blend of action, comedy, fantasy and horror. The studio synopsis describes an invented movie world; it should not be treated as an account of Chinese folklore. 20th Century Studios’ film page lists Kurt Russell and the principal credits.

2. The production began in October 1985

The AFI Catalog records the production start as October 7, 1985. That date places the shoot less than a year before the film’s 1986 release. AFI’s catalog entry is also useful for understanding how the production was organized.

3. San Francisco appears first; much of the action was built on a studio lot

According to AFI’s production notes, the opening establishing shots of Jack driving into San Francisco and Chinatown were filmed in the city. Most of the scenes that follow were made on sets at Twentieth Century-Fox. The result combines real city imagery with an extensively constructed version of the story’s underground world.

4. The reported budget depends on which account you use

AFI records two different budget accounts rather than one settled figure. An August 10, 1985 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner item cited an $18 million budget. AFI also reports that Carpenter later said in DVD commentary that the original budget was above $20 million before the studio required a reduction. These are distinct reports about the budget at different points, not evidence for a single agreed final cost.

5. The screenwriting credit has a contested history

A June 29, 1986 Los Angeles Times article reported that Gary Goldman and David Weinstein had difficulty obtaining screen credit. Present-day official listings use different labels: the studio credits David Z. Weinstein, Gary Leon Goldman and W. D. Richter as writers, while Carpenter’s official film page identifies Goldman and Weinstein as screenwriters and Richter as responsible for the adaptation. The contemporaneous report and differing credit descriptions make this a more complicated credit history than a straightforward authorship claim. The Los Angeles Times article covers the dispute; the Carpenter film page gives his listing.

7. Published runtimes also differ
