The title’s 12-film count reflects an earlier scope: the current guide includes 13 films, adding The Odyssey (2026) at No. 1. Scores and ordering are a dated snapshot, not fixed ratings.
How Rotten Tomatoes ranks Christopher Nolan’s movies
The Tomatometer is the critics’ score used for the guide’s ranking; the audience score appears separately as the Popcornmeter. These percentages measure different groups and should not be combined. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, written by Alex Vo and updated July 16, 2026, presents the following numbered order. Because several films tie and the displayed positions do not always descend by Tomatometer percentage, the table preserves the guide’s order rather than sorting the scores independently.
| Guide position | Film | Year | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Odyssey | 2026 | 94% | 90% |
| 2 | The Dark Knight | 2008 | 94% | 94% |
| 3 | Memento | 2000 | 94% | 94% |
| 4 | Oppenheimer | 2023 | 93% | 88% |
| 5 | Dunkirk | 2017 | 92% | 81% |
| 6 | Insomnia | 2002 | 92% | 77% |
| 7 | The Dark Knight Rises | 2012 | 87% | 90% |
| 8 | Inception | 2010 | 86% | 91% |
| 9 | Following | 1998 | 87% | 85% |
| 10 | Batman Begins | 2005 | 85% | 94% |
| 11 | The Prestige | 2006 | 77% | 92% |
| 12 | Interstellar | 2014 | 73% | 87% |
| 13 | Tenet | 2020 | 70% | 70% |
All percentages and positions in the table are from Rotten Tomatoes’ guide updated July 16, 2026. The numbers are not a promise of how the list will look later; ratings and ordering can change. The guide places Following at No. 9 with 87%, below Inception at No. 8 with 86%, so a position should be read as the guide’s ordering, not as a strict sort of the displayed critic percentages. The same snapshot has ties at 94% and 92%.
Where Inception ranks—and what the scores say
Inception (2010) sits at No. 8 in that snapshot: 86% on the Tomatometer and 91% on the Popcornmeter. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes it as “Smart, innovative, and thrilling, Inception is that rare summer blockbuster that succeeds viscerally as well as intellectually.” That is the site’s editorial consensus, not a quotation attributed to one critic.
#1 Best Overall
- Christopher Nolan 8 Film Collection
The film follows Dom Cobb, a thief who enters dreams to steal secrets from the subconscious. Christopher Nolan directed it; Leonardo DiCaprio plays Cobb, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Arthur, Elliot Page plays Ariadne, and Tom Hardy plays Eames. The higher Popcornmeter figure indicates a different audience-score result than the critics’ Tomatometer; it does not change the film’s position in the guide.

- It is a dated list: the figures above represent the July 16, 2026 guide snapshot, not permanent scores.
- The 12-film title is no longer a complete count: Rotten Tomatoes’ current displayed guide includes 13 films, with The Odyssey (2026) at the top.
- Position and percentage are not interchangeable: ties and the Following/Inception ordering show why it is useful to report both the numbered position and the score.
- For viewing options, check the film page: Rotten Tomatoes’ Inception page lists Fandango for rental or purchase; availability may vary.
