“Casting couch” is a broad term for sexual propositions or pressure linked to auditions, jobs, or career access. The accounts below are not all the same: some describe explicit requests tied to work, others describe sexualized auditions or harassment after a role was booked. They are public accounts reported by the outlets cited—not, by themselves, independently adjudicated findings.

Hollywood accounts

Gwyneth Paltrow

ABC News reported that Paltrow said someone suggested they finish a meeting in a bedroom. She said she left and was shocked by the suggestion. ABC News

Charlize Theron

Theron recalled to ABC News that modeling agents sent her to a well-known director’s home for what was represented as a casting call for extras. She found the director in pajamas and left. The report does not establish that the meeting was a legitimate casting call. ABC News

Helen Mirren

ABC News reported Mirren’s account of a 1964 casting session in which director Michael Winner allegedly made her flaunt her body and turn around. The account is described as an allegation; the report does not provide further details. ABC News

Megan Fox

ABC News quoted Fox describing casting-couch experiences after she had become famous. She said she was disappointed to discover that a person she admired wanted something other than a conversation. ABC News

Jane Fonda

The Guardian reported that Fonda had said she was fired “because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss.” Her account describes pressure within a work relationship, rather than a casting-room encounter. The Guardian

Zoe Kazan

The Guardian quoted Kazan describing harassment by a producer while she was working on a scene. She said: “He’d say, ‘Oh, it’s a joke, ha ha.’ But he was also paying my cheque and then watching me from the monitor as I made out with another actor.” Her account concerns conduct on a production after work was underway. The Guardian

Thandiwe Newton

The Guardian summarized Newton’s account that, as a teenager, she was persuaded to let a director film up her skirt during an audition and later learned the footage had been circulated at parties. This summary describes an invasive audition and alleged later circulation of the footage. The Guardian

Glenn Close

Vanity Fair quoted Close recalling an audition where there was a bed in the room and the actor she was asked to read with did not know his lines. “I was asked to come in and read with an actor who was huge at the time, and I walked in and there was a bed,” she said. The report does not identify the actor, so no identity can be inferred from her account. Vanity Fair

Accounts from Indian film and television

Ranveer Singh

Singh told NDTV, “Casting couch is a very real thing. I have experienced it first-hand.” He described a meeting at a man’s home in Andheri and said the man offered access to production houses in exchange for sexual favours. NDTV did not identify the man. NDTV

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar

Hindustan Times reproduced Sarathkumar’s account of suggestive comments by a television channel programming head. Her recollection included the response: “No no! Not work… for other things.” The account is attributed to Sarathkumar as reproduced by the newspaper. Hindustan Times

Ayushmann Khurrana

Hindustan Times reported that Khurrana said a casting director asked him for sexual favours when he was working in television. The report does not identify the casting director. Hindustan Times

Radhika Apte

Apte’s account included an important qualification: Hindustan Times reported that she said she had not received a direct request to sleep with someone. She also recounted other uncomfortable incidents, including a call asking whether she would be willing to sleep with a person for a film meeting. Hindustan Times

Kalki Koechlin

Hindustan Times quoted Koechlin saying she left when she felt uncomfortable. That brief account does not give details about the person involved or the precise circumstances, so it should not be expanded into a more specific allegation. Hindustan Times

Why these stories are not interchangeable

The label can obscure meaningful differences. Some accounts describe a direct sexual proposition attached to access or employment; others describe harassment during work, an uncomfortable audition, or a reported incident without a clearly stated career bargain. The sources also vary: they include direct quotations, statements reproduced by a newspaper, and reporters’ summaries. Keeping those distinctions visible is essential, especially where a person is unnamed or an account is an allegation rather than an established finding.

The Guardian’s 2017 reporting on Equity’s Manifesto for Casting said the union guidance recommended that “no sex act should be requested at any audition” and that a performer asked to undress should have a mutually agreed observer. This is dated union guidance, not a statement of current universal law. The Guardian

The cited reports do not establish a reliable prevalence estimate for casting-couch incidents. They document attributed experiences, not how often such conduct occurs across an industry.
