Katharine Hepburn holds the record for acting Oscars, with four competitive wins. Ingrid Bergman, Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand follow with three each. Seven more actresses are profiled below from a much larger tie group with two wins apiece; the Academy’s totals do not establish a unique 5th-through-11th order.

This ranking counts only competitive wins in the Academy’s Actress in a Leading Role and Actress in a Supporting Role categories. The count is current through the 98th Academy Awards, presented on March 15, 2026, for films released in 2025.

How the ranking works

An acting Oscar means a win for Actress in a Leading Role or Actress in a Supporting Role. Honorary awards and wins in other categories are excluded. Frances McDormand’s Best Picture win as a Nomadland producer, for example, is separate from her three acting Oscars.

The Academy’s compact historical statistics sheet was updated through the 88th Awards in 2016, while its official database is complete through the 98th ceremony in 2026. Jessie Buckley won Actress in a Leading Role and Amy Madigan won Actress in a Supporting Role at the 2026 ceremony; neither changed the leaders listed here.

More than seven actresses have two acting Oscars. Consequently, the seven names in the final rows are a transparent selection for an 11-person feature, not the only actresses who share that rank. Every performer with two wins is tied on the count itself.

1. Katharine Hepburn — four wins

Hepburn is the sole actress with four competitive acting Oscars. Her wins span nearly five decades: Morning Glory (1932/33), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968) and On Golden Pond (1981).

5 (tie). The two-win group

The Academy’s historical acting facts identify a broad group of actresses with two competitive wins. Because the group is larger than the seven remaining places in this title, these profiles should be read as representative members of the tie rather than a claim that they alone occupy the next positions.

What the count does—and does not—measure

  • It measures wins, not the number of nominations or the quality of performances.
  • Leading-role and supporting-role victories are combined.
  • Honorary distinctions and Oscars in producing or other categories are excluded.
  • A tie in wins is a genuine tie; it does not prove that one actress ranked above another artistically.
