These ten films show how wide the thriller can stretch: from an unsolved-case investigation and a class-conflict story to a superhero crime saga and a relentless desert pursuit. “Defined” is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking: each film combines suspense craft with critical or cultural visibility and offers a useful reference point for its corner of the genre.

The selection draws on Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 critics’ survey, which included seven of these films among its most popular choices from the last 25 years. That survey covered films generally, not thrillers alone, so it supports their visibility rather than establishing a definitive thriller canon. The list also uses a broad but purposeful definition: suspense must be central, even when a film overlaps with horror, action, neo-noir, or crime. Rotten Tomatoes’ survey and selection method

10 thrillers that defined the last 25 years

The films are arranged by release year, not ranked. Together, they demonstrate different ways to create tension: uncertainty about identity, a tightening investigation, a looming threat, shifting power, or pursuit under pressure.

1. Mulholland Dr. (2001) — psychological neo-noir

David Lynch turns Los Angeles into a puzzle of unstable identities and unanswered questions. Its suspense comes less from a conventional investigation than from the viewer’s effort to work out what is real and how the fragments fit together. Rotten Tomatoes calls it a “twisty neo-noir,” a useful description of its mix of mystery and disorientation. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

Watch it for: dreamlike mystery and psychological unease. Its deliberately unconventional structure is part of the experience, not a clue that the film will resolve like a standard detective story.

2. Zodiac (2007) — procedural crime thriller

David Fincher’s film follows the anxiety and obsession surrounding the investigation of the Zodiac killings. Rather than lean on graphic violence or action, it builds dread through interviews, clues, uncertainty, and the toll of a case that resists closure. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus calls it “A quiet, dialogue-driven thriller that delivers with scene after scene of gut-wrenching anxiety.”

Watch it for: patient investigative suspense and an atmosphere shaped by period detail. It is a particularly strong choice if you prefer tension that accumulates through inquiry rather than spectacle. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

3. The Dark Knight (2008) — crime thriller in superhero form

Christopher Nolan’s Batman film works as a superhero story, but much of its momentum comes from crime-thriller machinery: escalating threats, strategic confrontations, and difficult choices under pressure. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes it as a “richly thrilling crime saga.” That label captures why it belongs here: the suspense is not incidental to the comic-book setting; it drives the film’s conflicts.

Watch it for: a large-scale, accessible blend of crime, moral pressure, and action. Its inclusion reflects the thriller’s capacity to cross genres, not a claim that every superhero film is a thriller. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

4. Inglourious Basterds (2009) — dialogue-driven war thriller

Quentin Tarantino blends war, revenge, and black comedy into a counterfactual historical story. Some of its most suspenseful passages depend on conversation: a character may be in danger long before anyone reaches for a weapon. The pauses, concealed intentions, and possibility of sudden violence make dialogue itself a source of threat. Rotten Tomatoes characterizes the film as a genre-blending thrill ride.

Watch it for: drawn-out confrontations and suspense built through performance and delayed violence. Its history is deliberately fictionalized, so approach it as an alternate-history thriller rather than a factual account of World War II. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

5. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) — action and survival thriller

George Miller makes sustained pursuit the engine of this action thriller. The characters face immediate physical jeopardy, and the film’s momentum comes from trying to survive and escape rather than solve a mystery. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus praises its exhilarating action and narrative weight.

Watch it for: propulsive chase suspense with a story that gives the spectacle stakes. It sits toward the action end of the thriller spectrum, but danger and pursuit remain central throughout. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

6. Get Out (2017) — social thriller with horror and comedy

Jordan Peele’s film begins with social unease and steadily turns it into a threat. Polite encounters become harder to read as the protagonist tries to understand what is happening and whether he can get out safely. The horror elements are substantial, but escalating suspicion and danger give the story a clear thriller pulse. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as a horror-comedy thrill ride carrying social critique.

Watch it for: suspense that grows from the gap between reassuring appearances and mounting evidence of danger. Its horror-comedy overlap is a strength, not a reason to treat its social tension as secondary. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

7. Parasite (2019) — social thriller

Bong Joon Ho’s film turns class conflict into an unstable contest over access, status, and control. A family’s attempt to change its circumstances sets off shifts in power, while greed and class discrimination shape the danger that follows. Its genre changes are part of the suspense: the viewer has to keep recalibrating what kind of conflict is unfolding.

Watch it for: layered social themes and tension created by unequal power. It is best described as a social thriller rather than a straight crime or action film. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ survey

8. No Country for Old Men (2007) — crime and neo-western suspense

Joel and Ethan Coen’s film fits a thriller-focused list through its pursuit, threat, and moral uncertainty: a discovery sets dangerous forces in motion, and characters confront consequences they cannot reliably control. Its neo-western setting gives the suspense a stark, open-ended feel rather than the familiarity of a conventional police procedural.

Watch it for: spare, tense storytelling where danger can arrive without warning. The selection here is an editorial choice, not a claim that a critics’ poll identified it as one of the decade’s defining thrillers.

9. The Social Network (2010) — institutional and legal suspense

David Fincher’s drama is not a conventional thriller, but its story of conflict around the creation of Facebook is driven by competing accounts, strategic maneuvering, and the consequences of decisions made under pressure. The suspense is social and institutional rather than physical: who controls the story, who will be held responsible, and what the disputes will cost.

Watch it for: fast-moving dialogue and conflict built around power, reputation, and competing claims. It is the list’s most boundary-pushing inclusion; viewers looking for pursuit or physical danger may prefer another entry.

10. Prisoners (2013) — crime and moral thriller

Denis Villeneuve’s film centers on a missing-children investigation and the desperate choices made as uncertainty persists. It combines procedural questions—what happened, and what can be established—with moral pressure that grows as characters act without clear answers.

Watch it for: an intense investigation where suspense and ethical unease are tightly linked. Its bleak tone makes it a tougher recommendation for viewers seeking a lighter thriller.

Why “defined” is an editorial judgment, not an official ranking

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2023 survey asked individually approved Tomatometer critics to submit five favorite films from the last 25 years, then published the 25 most popular selections. It includes Mulholland Dr., The Dark Knight, Zodiac, Inglourious Basterds, Get Out, Parasite, and Mad Max: Fury Road. Because the poll covered films generally rather than thrillers specifically, it is evidence of critical visibility—not proof of a definitive genre hierarchy. The remaining selections broaden the list’s modes of suspense; they are included as considered editorial choices, not as poll results.

A separate Rotten Tomatoes 21st-century ranking combines Tomatometer and Popcornmeter information, review counts, user votes, and release year, with editorial refinement. It offers one model for considering critics, audiences, and period context together, but it does not establish a canonical list of thrillers. Rotten Tomatoes’ 100 Greatest Movies of the 21st Century

There is also a longer history of trying to define the genre. For its 2001 thriller project, the American Film Institute considered feature-length U.S. fiction films and described a criterion of “the total adrenaline-inducing impact of a film’s artistry and craft.” The project drew from 400 nominees and more than 1,800 people from the U.S. film community; those figures describe that historical selection process, not the influence or popularity of the films in this list.
