There is no definitive, universal ranking of the scariest movies: fear depends on the viewer, and a jump-scare study is measuring something different from a critics-and-audience list. This watchlist uses MoneySuperMarket’s 2025 Science of Scare results as its starting point, then balances measured responses with suspense, atmosphere, reception, and variety across horror styles and eras. The first three picks lead that study; the remaining choices broaden the list rather than claim a single consensus ranking.

How to read this list

MoneySuperMarket’s 2025 Science of Scare project screened selected English-language horror films with a 250-person panel, tracking heart rate and heart-rate variability. Its results are a project-specific comparison, not a medical measure or a universal verdict on what will frighten every viewer. The project says it introduced a combined Scare Score in 2023 after feedback that heart rate alone favored films built around jump scares over slow-burn horror. Its comparison baseline was a 64 bpm average resting heart rate.

That is different from Rotten Tomatoes’ “200 Best Horror Movies of All Time,” whose recommendation formula uses critic and audience scores, review count, and release year. Reception can help identify enduring favorites, but it does not measure how frightening a film feels. The selections below are therefore arranged as a watchlist with clear differences in fear style, not as a fabricated consensus ranking.

The 10 scariest movies to watch

1. Sinister (2012) — supernatural dread

Sinister took first place in MoneySuperMarket’s 2025 Science of Scare results, with a project Scare Score of 96 out of 100. The film’s reputation in that ranking makes it a natural opening pick for viewers looking for sustained supernatural unease as well as shocks. The score belongs to that study’s selected pool and panel; it is not a promise that every viewer will find it the most frightening.

2. Host (2020) — found-footage immediacy

Host placed second in the same project, scoring 95 out of 100. Its screen-based, found-footage approach gives the scares an immediate, confined feel, making it a sharp contrast with more gradual atmospheric horror. Choose it when you want a contemporary, compact-feeling scare rather than a classic suspense build.

3. Skinamarink (2022) — experimental slow-burn

Skinamarink ranked third in the 2025 results with a Scare Score of 91 out of 100. Its place alongside more conventional fright films is a reminder that fear is not only about sudden jolts: its appeal is tied to atmosphere and uncertainty. This is the pick for viewers willing to sit with an unusually patient, disorienting form of dread.

4. Insidious (2010) — supernatural jolts

Insidious appears among the Science of Scare project’s ten highest-ranked films. It is a useful choice if you want supernatural threat delivered with a more overtly startling edge than the slow-burn approach of Skinamarink. Its study placement reflects the project’s panel and method, not a universal ranking.

5. The Conjuring (2013) — haunted-house suspense

Also in the 2025 project’s top ten, The Conjuring offers a haunted-house mode of horror built around suspense and supernatural menace. It suits viewers looking for a recognizably traditional, escalating scare story rather than experimental ambiguity.

6. Hereditary (2018) — psychological and supernatural unease

Hereditary made the Science of Scare top ten and brings a more psychologically unsettling tone to this selection. It is a strong option when the desired effect is not simply a string of jolts, but a lingering sense of unease. Individual tolerance for intense material varies; check a film-specific content guide if you have particular concerns.

7. Smile 2 (2024) — contemporary pop-horror

Smile 2 was among the project’s ten highest-ranked films in 2025. Its inclusion adds a recent, mainstream entry to the list and suits viewers interested in contemporary supernatural horror. The Science of Scare result says where it placed in that project’s pool; it does not establish a universal audience response.

8. Smile (2022) — escalating supernatural fear

The original Smile also appeared in the project’s 2025 top ten. Pairing it with its sequel gives viewers a way to explore two contemporary entries from the same horror premise, while keeping the list’s measured-response picks distinct from its classics and suspense-led choices.

9. Psycho (1960) — suspense and expectation

For a classic that unsettles through suspense rather than a modern barrage of effects, try Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. JustWatch’s US guide highlights the film’s use of suspense and expectation, and includes rental, purchase, and Blu-ray options as part of its viewing guide. Those listings are a US-oriented snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability in every market.

10. The Exorcist (1973) — classic supernatural horror

The Exorcist provides a classic supernatural counterpoint to the contemporary films dominating the Science of Scare list. It also appears in the broader all-time recommendation landscape: Rotten Tomatoes’ reception-based guide includes it among its opening entries. Its presence here reflects its lasting place in horror recommendations, not a claim that critics’ or audience scores measure fear.

Why different “scariest movie” lists disagree

  • Fear response: The Science of Scare project tracks heart rate and heart-rate variability in its panel and combines them into a Scare Score. MoneySuperMarket explains that it added the combined approach after feedback that a heart-rate-only study favored jump-scare-heavy films over slow-burn horror.
  • Critical and audience reception: Rotten Tomatoes says its recommendation formula factors in both the Tomatometer and audience-driven Popcornmeter, along with review count and release year. That makes its all-time guide a reception ranking, not a physiological scare ranking.
  • Editorial selection and viewing discovery: JustWatch’s US guide is another editorial selection and includes viewing information for its market. Its choices and availability details serve a different purpose from either a panel study or a reception formula.

None of these approaches covers every horror film ever made. MoneySuperMarket describes its project as limited to selected English-language films, with candidates gathered from sources including critic lists, forums, recommendations, and feedback. Use the rankings as useful lenses, then choose by the kind of fear you actually want: abrupt jolts, creeping dread, supernatural menace, or classic suspense.

Where to watch these films

Streaming, rental, and purchase availability changes by country and date. JustWatch’s guide is explicitly US-oriented, and the listings it reports are a snapshot; check a current local listing for the title you want before planning a watch. The cited guides do not establish worldwide or present-day availability for every film in this list.
