The March 3, 2026 total lunar eclipse turned the Moon red as it passed through Earth’s shadow. NASA lists the event’s visibility region as eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific and the Americas—not every place on Earth. The links below lead to documented photographs and galleries from the event; they are source collections, not a verified final set of ten individual images.
Photographs from the March 3 eclipse
These documented sources offer views from different settings and locations. Check each image’s caption for its exact location, photographer and eclipse phase; a gallery’s regional reach does not mean every image shows totality.
1. The eclipsed Moon above NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility
NASA published a view of the Moon over its Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 5, 2026. The image is credited to NASA/Michael DeMocker. See NASA’s New Orleans photograph and caption.
2. The Moon setting behind a Utah ridge
NASA’s resource page documents photographs by NASA photographer Bill Dunford, including a partially eclipsed Moon setting behind a ridge in Knolls, Utah. This view captures the eclipse in a landscape rather than isolating the Moon against open sky. See NASA’s March 3 eclipse photo resources.

3–10. Captioned views from multiple locations
The Associated Press published a photo gallery titled “Photos of a blood-red moon and total lunar eclipse” on March 3, 2026. Its captions identify locations and photographers for individual images. Use the captions to distinguish where each photograph was made and what phase it shows; the gallery is not, by itself, confirmation of a particular selection of ten images. View the AP photo gallery.
NASA’s Earth Observatory also reported on the event and published a satellite composite showing changes in moonlight reaching Earth as the eclipse progressed. It helps explain the eclipse’s effects, but it is not a ground-based photograph of a red Moon. Read NASA Earth Observatory’s eclipse report.

What the photographs show—and why the Moon turns red
A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s umbra—the darkest part of its shadow—covers the Moon. The Moon does not disappear: sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere still reaches it. Shorter blue wavelengths scatter more readily in the atmosphere, while longer red and orange wavelengths can continue toward the lunar surface, giving the Moon its characteristic color. Atmospheric dust and clouds can affect how red or orange it appears. NASA explains the effect in its eclipses guide.
“Blood Moon” is a popular description of the reddish appearance during a total lunar eclipse, not a separate astronomical type. Photographs can differ in apparent color because of atmospheric conditions and exposure; color alone does not establish that one image shows a different kind of eclipse.

When the eclipse happened and where it was visible
NASA’s eclipse catalog classifies the March 3, 2026 event as total, gives its greatest eclipse as 11:34:52 UT, and lists an overall duration of 3 hours 27 minutes, including 58 minutes of totality. These are global event figures, not a promise that every observer saw the full sequence. Local visibility depended on the Moon’s position and the observer’s horizon.
NASA identifies eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific and the Americas as the broad visibility region. Within that region, location and local conditions determined whether the Moon was above the horizon and whether a given phase could be seen. NASA’s lunar eclipse catalog lists the event details; NASA Earth Observatory also describes the event’s visibility across the Americas, East Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

How to read eclipse-photo captions
- Location: A city, landscape or landmark helps establish the photograph’s setting; it does not alone show which phase is pictured.
- Phase: Look for whether the caption identifies a partial phase, totality or the Moon emerging from Earth’s umbra. A composite may combine several moments and should be labeled as such.
- Framing: A Moon paired with a ridge or building gives a sense of place, while a tighter image emphasizes the lunar color and shadow.
- Credit and reuse: Preserve the listed photographer and agency credit, and verify the rights and permitted uses for each chosen image. A published gallery or NASA page is not, on its own, a blanket reuse license.
